I use a Bowmaster portable bow press to relax the string on my Mathews LX for changing my peep etc. and it works great. But when I go up north I want to bring an extra string and cables just in case...
My question is, can I change my string in case of emergency with a portable bow press? Someone told me that I couldn't but I didn't get any detail as to why not. I had just always assumed I could.

You surely can. Matter of fact you can completely relax and disassemble a bow with a portable press. I have done so a good many times with my bowmaster. No offence to the person, but I would say whoever told you that you cannot change strings with it, shouldn't be consulted for this type of thing any further;)

Thank you for the info...I had a hunch that the guy didn't know what he was talking about but he sure acted like he did. I won't mention the store he was from, but I'll know not to take any advice from him in the future.
Thanks again!

With some of the new PSEs your buddy is right.

But your Mathews is fine.

Sure you can. Just remember changing strings and cables more than likely will mean sighting in again. The new strings will be tighter and will change things some.

If changing a string on a trip away from home is an issue for you!
Then I would consider having the spare all ready, all worked in and pre-set with all adjustments in place, noc point, peep tied in, twisted and settled to the proper length, tie the ends with a twist tie as not to lose any twist, put in a ziploc bag and your set for emergency's even if your at home!
I have built strings and set them for guys heading out west, the chances of finding a shop to do emergency repairs in the ROCKY's is not good!

Good luck!

If you think this, and of course it will, will happen. Then this spring or summer when you get out and start shooting a lot and your string is broke in, replace it and use it for a spare, that way everything is all set. Hint, before taking it off write on a piece of paper all your settings, where the peep goes, nock set, and whatever I find that makes it easier setting up the new string.
