I'd trade the pike that snapped my line Sunday for that any day of the week!

Yeah definately a male coho but his biological clock is screwd up.Now what in the world is coho doing in LSC?Very strange to have witnessed I bet.One of my friends caught one out of Lexington through the ice Christmas day a few years ago which I thought was strange.

Oh great!..... ya got thre only east side salmon left! Now what are we gonna do all summer:mad:

That had to have been a blast, then shocking. Good job!

Don't coho's have a deeper fork in their tails than this one? My guess without a better pic or being there would be steel(more likely too with the Clinton close by)
Mouth(gums) color would have helped too. Look at the hen in the photo's at the top of the site page.

What a catch though. I'd have been a little freaked out shoe-horning that thing thru my 4" hole:yikes:

wannabapro
03-05-2009, 07:13 AM
It's not a king because the tail is not forked at all.

It's not a pink b/c that fish is definitely a male and male pinks in spawning colors get a big hump on their backs. I caught a male pink 2 years ago in spawning colors in LSC in September while bass fishing and it had a huge hump.

It could be a coho, if it had been caught in October.

That leaves only a male steelhead with a big 'ol head and that does make sense as they are running the creeks now.

C,mon fellas. Slight fork in the tail, you can also see a tad of black on the lower gums. That is an S.E.michigan coho. Saw 4 or 5 caught out of the huron this season that are a spittin image of that guy.I would love to hook one of those through the ice. Very nice fish.

That's an awesome bonus to the day!

I'm not familiar with them in anyway, but I remember years back that guys would troll for Coho right after ice out in the North Channel around Deckers. Not sure if that's still the case but could be one that just lost his way.

A cohos gums are white with touches of black throughout the gumline, a steelie has no black anywhere on the gums, and a king has almost all black gums. Also, it is not uncommon for a coho to have some spots on the tail. I know its kinda tough to tell the difference if you have not caught many of these fish in the past. But that fish is a salmon. A guy on the huron pulled up a coho and he was so happy that he caught a nice male steelie. I showed him the specifics and he turned out to be even happier that he had landed a coho. They are very similar, but to a expierienced eye, you can tell them them apart just by looking at them. I only know because I have landed many of these fish over the years. Hope this helps.

Defiinitely a male coho. A few do run up the Clinton River in the Fall, although I hear that there are a very small# that run up early, and others that run up really late.

Cool!

GONE FISHIN(LARRY)
03-14-2009, 11:14 AM
I'll through in a curve ball that fish might be a pinook a cross between a king and pink , a few years back there were quite a few of then in Lk. Huron most just thought they were small kings when caught out in the lake . With the red belly and hooked jaw at first look looks like a male coho but then the tails looks like a king tail . There is a strain of kings from Alsaka were the males get red bellies It's for sure not a steelhead .

Without a better pic were I can see inside the mouth and see the tail a little better my quess is pinook .

Just my 2 cents worth .

Larry
