I was out to Gander Mountain last night and seen the new St. Croix ice rods. They look and feel like some pretty nice rods! There are made out the same blank as there Avid series rods. They have a graphite handle with the only draw back being there is no reel seat. You will have to tape your reel to the rod. The rods came in a ultra light for perch and panfish and they also had a real nice medium action for chasing after those eyes!!! Another draw back is the price I think they wanted around $30 for just the rod. Its hard to buy a rod for that much when they have some pretty nice rod & reel combo's for around $20. I hope they dont sell well and I can pick a couple up after the season for cheap!!! Because I do want a couple of them!!!!! Anyone else see them or have used them? What do you think?
One more thing to add to my list of things to check out! ;) I prefer to tape the reels on the rods, so that will save me from cutting those cheap rings off. Frabill came out with some nice ice rods last year too. So much stuff to try, so little time. LOL

Hey Mike I have heard that before about taping your reels to your rods. What is the benifit of doing that? Does it make them more sensitive?
To me, just seems like it keeps things more secure. Those plastic reel seat rings always seem to work loose at the wrong time. I've heard the sensitivity thing too, but when your on the ice, wearing gloves or fishing with half frozen hands, not sure it matters.:)

I tape my reels too. The plastic rings stay cold for a long time and like to come loose. I also think it makes it more sensative due to the fact tape attaches them more solidly. Sensativity is real important in the cold. Tape warms faster and I hate to wear gloves.
