Hope to squeeze out a couple more trips, being a canal junkie has some advantages, a little longer ice! Perch has been lousy, but gillin hasn't been bad.

Last year was the best year I've ever had. Murdered the Gills and Perch at cotton and 11 mile.

But this year is terrible, there is no arguing that...

After getting skunked most of the winter for perch onL SC, I thought I would try Long Lake in Lake Orion. Meet up with 3 other guys, have been told they have been getting some nice big gills out of there this season.

So off we went, 4 of us fishing 9am to noon. I caught 5 gills, 5"-6" and all went back to get bigger. 12 man hours of fishing and total catch was 6 gills. I think I brought the LSC funk out there today. This is becoming a story of my life. Will try LSC tomorrow, not sure where to go. Good luck to you all tomorrow.

Hmmm. You hit a little near ticketripper and do good. Ticketripper goes, doesn't smack them. You hit LSC, and no one hits them but a select few. You hit Higgins, then I get a "less than stellar day" we'll leave it at that.
I'm starting to see a trend here buddy.:yikes:

Worst I've seen it in 30 years. I'm still blaming the Cormorants. Those birds wiped out the perch in Les Cheneaux Islands, Drummond Island, Manitoulin Island, Beaver Island and points North. They're doing the same thing here every summer.

Mike, It seems like all the small ones would be gone if it were those DAMN birds? Just a thought. Higgins - here we come! Capnhook

No, I see it just the opposite. The little fish can hide in the weeds unseen. The big fish are too visible and those birds can swallow a two pound walleye no problem.

We have a cabin in Cedarville. I was born up there, and most of my family still lives there. Most people blamed gill nets on fishing going down, but I will say almost for sure it's those damned birds. Since the DNR started decreasing their population the perch and the pike fishing has improved greatly. I personally hate those birds/ducks, (whatever the heck they are) and want them all gone. I could give 2 craps as to whether they are on the endangered species list. They don't belong here in the numbers they have. I don't see as many down this way, but I bet if they start ruining fishing down here, it won't take nearly as long for the DNR to do something about it. I think they have proven that fish numbers rebound quite nicely when they are controlled. My .02

HOLY CANOLI!!! I had no idea. WOW! It's a wonder we have any fish left in any lakes. I thought they ate the 8" on down. We really need to start a cormarant recipe section.:D Just kidding. I know that would be illegal, although, I've heard they taste a lot like blue heron.:):)Capnhook

The Les Cheneaux Islands, Drummond Island, Beaver Island, Manitoulin Island, Charity Islands - all have large (1,000's of birds) nesting colonies with thousands or tens of thousands of resident birds all summer - adults raising their young. I don't think that situation is at all like anything we have here at Lake St. Clair, but maybe you've seen some big nesting colonies someplace that I haven't noticed? How many cormorants do you think are resident birds on Lake St. Clair during the summer? I see a few dozen here and there, but doubt there's more than a couple hundred birds on the whole lake from June to September. Big flocks migrate through in the spring and fall, but don't seem to stay very long. The only nesting site I've seen is on the Peche Island range lights (maybe 75 nest total). Have you seen nests anywhere else?

I've also seen a lot of them midlake at the St. Clair Light. I haven't been up near Seaway Island in the last year or two but I would suspect that area is a prime nesting site.

I don't know anyone that has walked around on Peche Island. From the water I doubt if you would see any nests because, if I recall correctly, they have nests on the ground. The pictures of other islands that I have seen were taken when it was already too late and the birds killed all the vegetation. So they may have elevated nests until the trees will no longer support their weight. I guess I'll have to reread some Google searches.

Feel free to do the same.
