Hello everyone, just wanted to check in. I just had all the stuff out today again! I've been driving for about a month with the mouth calls in the truck. Practice, Practice and more Practice. So what seasons are everyone hunting? I'm hunting the 234 hunt. I'll be chasing Gobblers in Missouri from the 23rd to 28th of April.

Hunt Hard and Hunt Safe!

Since we are all on same team, I thought we could share some of our favorite calls, techniques or hunts. The picture above is one of my favorites. This was taken a few years ago in Missouri. I'm here with my Brother and 3 nephews. I'm the one behind the young man holding the gun. We manage to take 3 nice gobblers that morning, it was my brother first Gobbler. I manage to call in 3 longbeards to him and his son Tye (little guy) was with him when he shot the Gobbler. Tye was only 5 at the time, hopefully this year he will shot his first bird. They other 2 young men are my nephews who live in Missouri. I cherish every hunt with them. They grew up with not the greatest parents and have really turned out to be some good boys.

Anyway we called in the Gobblers with an A-Way Fatal Attraction friction call and Black Magic mouth call. I use mostly A-Way calls, along with a Copper friction call from Slayton and a custom made box call from Shallowrio.

Good luck and be safe this season.

I have a picture of my last years bird taken in mid May. I basically get it done with friction calls, my mouth calling needs a ton of work and I do not own a box call. My son has upgraded our old Double Bull Blind to the new Dark Horse..... something or other. With that and his Pretty Boy decoys I am anxious to get started.
My son Brendon (HoytKatera125+) is in the photo along side me and my youngest boy Easton, holding the scattergun. He has a few years to go before he can start hunting, and boy, he's ready to go. :evil:

Well I've been seeing alot of Strutters the past week. Getting ready to head to Missouri in 4 weeks with my nephew. Practicing calls, double checking turkey vest, cloths, decoys and boots. This week heading to the Turkey Rendevous in Baldwin. Then I need to get the 11-87 out and make sure she's still shooting a good pattern of #5 heavy shot out to 40 yards.

What's everyone else been up too?

Hey guys. Just getting back from vacation with the family, much warmer in South Carolina :rant: at any rate just checken in with ya all. I've seen a few strutters in the last couple of days in my normal travels. I've got to get out myself and look for them on our hunten grounds, hopefully do some shed hunten this weekend and Turkey scouting as well. Brendon has been out quite a bit scouting, looks as if his opener is going to be productive. Lots of different ground for he and his hunting buddy to hunt.
Good luck to those hunting next week Monday and getting excited to get things started myself! :evil:

Looks like its gonna be a little cool and wet this morning but thats not gonna stop us. We did some scouting last weekend and found some active turkey sign in one of our usual morning spots so hopeful we will have some action today.

Hey guys, posting this for the boy, he needs a few more posts before he can start doing this.
Brendon hunted hard the first 6 days straight with stick and string, had some good hunts, will let him get into the details! :D
He took the scatter gun out Sunday and collected on this fine bird right close to high noon. Beard measured 9 9/16" with both hooks measuring 1 1/4" I'm thinking a 3 year old Gobbler.
So, we are on the board and good luck to the rest of you guys/gal :evil:
I am anxious to get started with my hunt :evilsmile
I'll post his other pictures in the contest thread.

Late Entry - Sorry folks, I've been kinda of behind with posting on here. Also was without a computer for a few days but have a new one now.

Made it out for the 2nd day of the 301 ZZ hunt (4/21).Hunted new property in Lenawee County I've never hunted before so I had no idea how the turkeys were roosting and feeding but knew there were birds there.
I ended up seeing 2 different flocks each having a few Tom's and had a group I heard behind me. No luck pulling anything into my calls and decoys.

Thursday 4-23, I headed back out for a morning hunt at the Lenawee prop. Birds were tight lipped this day. Sat in 2 different locations on the farm and never heard a gobble or saw a turkey after a 4 hour sit. I did have several deer feeding near me that morning then all of the sudden they spooked and ran. I thought the wind swirled and they caught a whiff of me, but to my suprise I had a red fox with two babbies come running in and milled around in the area for awhile.

I haven't been back out since due to work and family but I'm going out tomorrow morning to the Jackson County property where my Son shot his turkey on the 20th.

Congrats to BWHUNTR's Son Brendon on a great Turkey !!!

Great bird Brendon, we're on the board! To sum the wife's first three days up, Monday we had a monster at 20 yards and she couldn't see him. I was about six yard behind her callin' and I would have had a great shot on him, but thats hunting. Put alot of shoe leather down the rest of the day to no avail. Tues. got a late start and got on a bird at one in the afternooon and he hung up. Wed. went back to the bird we were on Mon. got him in to 25 yards and he got in the thick stuff. She never got a shot. Wish the wind would calm down for a day. Just got to keep plugin' away!

Well, the hunt is over. LongSpurs and I went into the same woods we went into last night (since I finally had to go back to work and could only hunt the evenings) and where I passed on 4 jakes. Probably about 10 minutes after we got into the spot we got the bird to gobble which has seemed to be pretty tough this week. We were able to watch him strut for a couple minutes about 300 yards out. He only did that for a little while before he decided to come on over. That only took a couple of minutes and he was within range. That was the end for that bird. He scored 35 points for us with a 9 1/2" beard, one spur at 13/16" and the other at 3/4". Not too bad but it's getting too late in the week to get real picky. I did that last night skipping the jakes. It's been a long week with a LOT of walking but it was all worth it. Can't wait til next year!!! Good luck to the rest of the team!! Great job Brendon!!

If I'm unable to connect tomorrow I'm going to try another new property on Wednesday in Allegan County. Again this property looks good and I actually saw some hens on Saturday while scouting.

Well I forgot to follow 2 key rules when turkey hunting Monday and thus a very nice Gobbler flew away.

* Pick a comfortable tree facing the direction you think the birds will come from.

* PATIENCE!

After not hearing any gobbling on a property in the Hastings area I stopped by a parcel in Shelbyville on my way home to hunt for an hour. My goal was to leave the woods by 11:30am. After setting up around 10:45am on the new property I starting calling. Nothing responded, after about 20 minutes I see a couple of hens coming through the woods, then I look past them and 2 nice Gobblers. Too make a long story short the strutter comes in nice and slow strutting all the way. He crosses the creek and all I can see is his head about 45 yards away. While he was approaching I was trying to move my body into a good shooting position. Easier said then done, well as I saw him peering into the little green area I have a hen decoy set up I try to get the sights on the bottom of his neck.

I'm telling myself to wait, however the trigger squeezes (because I have made this shot many times) and then the bird flies away. First miss in 7 years. Very Dissappointing!:mad: I would have been done at 11:30 if I only waited another minute or two.

Well I'm heading to another new piece of property tomorrow morning and I will definately remember the lessons learned from Mondays hunt.

Well yesterday I went to where I worked on the better bird the morning before. He moved on me. Could be due to the Coyote that hung around and spooked him, when I was set up on him. Heard him and two other rippin' it up in the trees back further. By the time I got back in on them, one Tom was down in a feild edge already. Got set up with a little rise in the lay of the land between him and myself. Could see his fan and his head but still had no good shot. A hen came in and I got her all fired up, and then, something spooked them back up in the trees above me. The one that I ended up shooting was 15 yards strait up, a hen to my right a little and where the other Tom came into the picture I don't know. But there were two of them there now. I just sat still and waited. The hen started going in the tree, and got the Toms gobbling again. The good Tom was the first to jump back down in the field, then the hen and another hen that was backin the woods. The second Tom right above me was the last one back on the ground. They struted for a few minutes and all I could see is the heads and there fans. the headed into an opening in the brush and it was hen ,hen, tom and the last tom. Thinking odds are the biggest bird is the last one through I turned it loose on him. Only about twenty- six paces but I had a 50/50 chance on the good one. Ya the better bird stood there as I walked out in the field, I think to say too bad you didn't get me. Not a long text book hunt but I'm still happy. Good luck Gobbleman and just keep it up and you know it will work out for you. Nice set of birds that we have taken so far.:)

WOW !!! Look at all those Turk's

Congrats to my fellow Team mates for shooting some nice Gobblers and stacking up some points for our team :D

For those that have asked where I've been ? basically computerless :rant:

I can't get on at work and have been without at home for a few days.

Long story short, we were due for a new computer and went to Best Buy and brought home a nice hp. Ended up being a Lemon with problems from GO !

Took it back and exchanged it for a Dell. Got her home and the wife worked on it for a while setting it up and transferring info and photos from the old computer when problems strike with this one.She made a call to Customer Service and the next thing you no, I had to box it up and take it back for a refund. She then went to Sam's and bought a nice hp from them and were up and running for a few days straight finally .

I made it out a few more times hunting but couldn't get a shot off on some henned up Tom's and passed on a few close range Jakes. I wish I could of helped our Team out but have to say that watching my 10 year old take his first made my season :D

Good Luck to those still chasing birds !

Well it's been a tough Michigan Hunt this season, after missing a very nice Gobbler on the 4th and then I ran into a string of bad luck. I've been busted by Gobblers, had Gobblers come in all fired up then walk away before getting into shooting distance. I had one within 20 steps, however I could not move on him. So he turned around a dissappeared. The last 2 mornings no gobbles on the roost. So this morning I get up to leave around 8am and busted again! Nice big bird flies away. So while driving to another place to hunt I saw to birds in a field on property I can hunt. I thought they were gobblers, after getting into position I hear a gobble on the other side of the woodlot. I then noticed the 2 birds were big hens so I moved on the gobbling bird. He came in gobbling and strutting, the set up was great, he had no idea I was there and I was able to hear and see him in time to get a good bead on him. Not the biggest bird, but he was worth the wait.

9 inch beard
Both spurs 1 inch

So 40 points for the team.:)

Looks like our team total is 230 points! Not sure where that puts us, however great job everyone. For those of you who archery hunt it is only 4 months away:D.

I just did a quick tally of the scores from the photo postings. There were a few pics that didn't come out, so I put a ? on that teams score. This is unofficial & likely to be changed by the official scorer.

1st) Snood Dudes = 300; 2nd) Tom Foolery = 295;
3rd) Hillsdale Headhunters = 285; 4th) 6 Birds Down = 230;
5th) Sunrise Assassins = 185; tie-6th)Sniffin Tailfeathers = 180;
tie-6th) Spit & Drum = 180; 8th) Gobblin' Thunder = 165;
9th) ?Beard Trimmers = 155?(or 110); 10th) Gobbler Getters = 145;
tie-11th)Spur-fect Shot = 135; tie-11th)Longbeard Legends = 135;
13th)Long Beard Only = 115; 14th) ?Fan Addicts = 105?(or 125);
15th)?The Ol' Fat Guys=100?(or 65); tie16th)Gizzard Stickers = 85; tie16th) Fowl Fellows = 85; 18th) Beard Busters = 60;
19th)The Fat Guys = 55; 20th) Gobbler Cobbler = 50;
tie-21st)Cuttin N Struttin = 40; tie-21st)Lazy D = 40;
23rd) Thunder Chickens = 35; 24th) Ruffling Feathers = 20.

This is very rough, and the 3 teams with ? may or will have their standings changed. Again I hope my posting this rough scoreboard doesn't ruffle any feathers (not intended as a pun with the 24th team).
