My daughter and I took a quick ride down to the river this afternoon. First stop Bean Tower, Frozen over compeltly. Drove up to Hooters and drove across the Holland street bridge. I couldnt believe my eyes we seen a guy fishing!!!! He access at the old bank lot and was about 15 yds from shore. I ask him how much ice and he said I thought 2 inches. But its good and hard he said. Wow If you ask me thats risking it!!!!!! Wont be long now I'd say by this weekend the carnival on ice festivites will begin!!!!!!!

2" of ice on the river--no thanks that old boy is looking to get wet.But the word will be out so by the weekend it will look like a carnavol(sp)on the ice.

Well I typically have a two day rule. When I see someone on the river fishing and if we continue to have cold weather. I typically wait two days for more ice to develop. So let me see that was wednesday so I guess good ice (if the weather cooperates) could be friday!!!! When I was younger I would have been out there with that guy but now Im a little older and a little wiser. No walleye is worth risking your life for. River ice is too unpredictable with the current flowing fast underneath it can quickly eat the ice. What looks good on top may be pretty thin underneath!!!

Thanks for the report Riverboy, if I get permission from the boss(wife) I may be out there on Sunday. Save a few for me.

You're right about the current in the river. One warm day on top, and the ice disappears. Tuesday I say a guy on the ice at Wickes Park, he wasn't fishing, just walking around on the ice. Let's keep each other posted about the fishing on the Saginaw River this winter.

I was crossing the Center St. bridge going West, and he was down on the south side of the bridge, near the park.

Don't forget about the big ships that come through, they break the ice up pretty quick.

The ships breaking up the ice generally doesnt affect the ice in Saginaw. The farthest they go up stream is Carrolton. which is a couple mile's or more downstream from where I like to fish!!!
Anybody been down by Zilwaukee? How is the ice coming?
