Unless I'm suprised by not being drawn for my first choice I'll but hunting area A, early season - April 20th start. I hope to get the time off from work to hunt a full week if necessary. Otherwise, it will be hunt 234 which I would have a lot more area to hunt in a number of counties.

I aplied for unit ZZ starting on April 20th on private land only. I've got 2 good locations Just north of Ottawa County and Montcalm county that I hope to capitilize on.

Looks like we got the state pretty well covered. I am staying at my parents house for the weekend where we have about 40 acres. I saw about 50 turkeys this morning in our backyard. There was a bunch of jakes and counted 3 longbeards along with one smokey grey hen. The season should be pretty good in Genesee county!!

not yet but it's close with this warm weather. The birds I was watching at my hunting grounds last weekend were startin to show signs. The toms seem to be getting territorial and the jakes have pretty much separated from their flocks. With this warm weather, especially in the southern counties, the toms are going to start to get hen tail on the brain!!

I saw about 50 of them tonight 3 distinct groups the jakes were on one corner of the 100 acre field, hens in the middle, and the toms on the other end... I did not see any toms strut up though. Perhaps tomorrow, i see em everyday

Yo!

Not sure if anyone here is looking for a blind to hunt out of or not but my local Gander Mountain has the Primo's Eclipse for $120. My old blind worked great for gun hunting but wasn't going to be wide enough for bow so I picked up this blind. I think the material is slightly heavier than other blinds. It doesn't have the vision coverage of, say the Ameristep 360, but good coverage. I also picked up a decent swivel stool (also at Gander)that puts me right at the perfect level for the windows. Here's a link to peruse the Eclipse... Primo's Eclipse Hub Blind (https://shop.primos.com/pc-1145-136-the-eclipse.aspx) Now I just need to get some more practice in. I couldn't wait so I set up my target in my basement and made a few shots from about 8 yards - LOL!!

I know this has been discussed numerous times before but I'm pouring a lot of effort into being ready when that moment comes. I pulled up this picture: Turkey Anatomy Diagrams (http://forums.mathewsinc.com/viewtopic.php?t=85425). Then I went to Google and searched images for "wild turkey" and found a bunch of pics of turkeys in different standing positions - strutting, half strutting, neck up, etc. I look at the picture, pick my shot, then compare it to the turkey anatomy images to see how my guess would be. I'm finding if you follow the legs back up to to the body, taking the bend at the "backwards knee" into consideration, they point right back up to where the body is. Anyway, its always fun learning new things in my opinion.

I am watching two large flocks of turkeys on a nightly basis one is mostly hens and a jake or two, and the other flock is 30+ birds and all of them are jakes with a couple ground draggers mixed in. All these birds are within farms I have permission to hunt. I have been shooting my bow atleast 3-4 times a week and I shoot on an archery league so I am ready to go!

Great news! Spoke with the property owner who lives on the front of the 200 acres we're hunting. She's been suprized how many birds she seen all year so far. Hopefully they stick around now.

Also - pulled out the blind and set up the target at 25 yards. It was my first time shooting from a sitting position. 8 shots - 3 would have been bird killers. I'll be shooting everyday from here on out. I like what I'm seeing but just need to get used to doing it from a sitting position!

It sure is different shooting out of sitting position in the blind. You use muscles you never thought you needed for shootin a bow. Sounds like your track and probably already 8 for 8.

I still need to pull out my bow. I might get the dust off from her this weekend. I'm going on a pig hunt at a ranch on April 11th with the bow so I better get things in tune.

My sources ( mom and dad) are still seeing nice toms strutting almost everyday where I will probably be hunting. I might head down there this weekend so I will have to take some pics.

Oh ya whats everybody else up to? this thread has been pretty quiet.

I have been doing a little scouting, but I have a pretty good idea where they will be come spring on my farm there is always a couple good toms on the south end of the main woods in the oak ridge....

I have been shooting 2-3 times a week I am goign to break the blind out this wekend if it doesn't rain to shoot a couple times. I have been tearing it up in the archery league currently 4th out of 110. Hopefully it transfers to woods this spring. I have one bird with my bow in two years of trying and only one arrow shot.

Had a GREAT day yesterday. While driving some back roads yesterday had a bach-flock, all jakes, cross the road about 50 yards ahead of us. As I came to a stop one of the jakes sounded off about 10 feet from the car. I came to a complete stop and then 4 or 5 sounded off all at one, the farthest away about 30 ft from the car. Even with the stumpy beards that'll get your heart beating again! LOL Then we hit the 3-D range. First time I've ever done that. What a blast. They only had 2 turkey targets but I would have dropped the bird, 25 yards, both times on the first shot. I did end up loosing 1 arrow - over estimated the yardage (bad) and watched it bounce off limbs and out of sight. I searched for about 10 minutes but it was a lost cause. OH WELL! Lessons learned. We FROZE but it was worth it.

Thats all you got down there??

I know there are at least three longbears. I havnt been down there long enough to keep an eye on em. In years past it seems like we always have 2 mature toms that stick around and when we shoot one off another one comes in. I'm sure there more but its hard to tell the difference sometimes with all the paintbrushes draggin the ground (ok maybe i'm exageratting a little, lol). Last year when I hunted the opening morning of the ZZ hunt, I had five longbeards with shotgun range but of course I had the bow and missed. It will be hard to top that morning. I think it is time to break out Mr. T, the glue and duck tape.

For the rest of you that don't know who Mr. T is. He is a full mounted turkey I got off from e-bay to turkey hunt with. Last year was his first time out and he work to good. After the first morning of two longbeards putting the smack down on him I had to break out the super glue and duck tape to attach his feathers and part of his wing. This happened two times later that spring with different long beards. I was absolutely impressed and I hope he makes it through another season. We thought Mr. T was right since in the Rocky movies he could take a beaten and deliver it to.

so since the new crossbow regulations passed are we going to allow crossbows in our little competition? It really doesnt matter to me and it still a stick and string compared to a shotgun. Figured I would throw this out there for some talk on our thread. I have shot them quite a bit and there actually a pain in the but to carry around in the field. One of things I love about turkey hunting is being ably to sit on the ground completely camoed up and have a nice tom come into close range without even knowing your there. When a hunt with a traditional bow I am always in a blind and I dont feel like I am right in the action even when they come in close. I guess the crossbow would allow me to get away from the blind and run and gun (crossbow) and not worry as much about movement. Whats your guys thoughts?

BowtechGuy
04-03-2009, 01:12 PM
Am I going to use one no. Do I care if anyone else uses one, absolutely not. I would consider it more bow than gun. I say if it is legal means and it tickles your fancy more than another way by all means go the way that excites and gives you the most enjoyment.

hoytshooter4
04-05-2009, 01:25 PM
Didn't occur to me that since they passed the law you could use crossbows for turkey too but I can see how it would be a good melding of the openness of gun hunting with the stick and string of a bow.

If you do use one let us know how it works out!

great shootin Bachflock!!! I have only done it once but it can be a costly considering the price of arrows. Also impressive that you did it with two different types of arrows.

I will be out in the woods monday morning but will only be having calls in hand. I can't wait to get out there. Right now it seems like i may have to many jakes right now. They seem to be causing problems with the longbeards.

Thank you thank you. Yeah, the arrow that was ruined as a 4056 and the arrow that centered it is a 6075. I hunt with 6075s and was somewhat relieved when I found it was the odd one. Frankly, I don't want to repeat it at any yardage! LOL

Jakes - yeah, this is only my 3rd year turkey hunting. Took a jake my first year being a new hunter and last year took a jake with only an hour and a half to go before it was time to pack up and leave turkey camp. Now I'm tempted again now its my first hunt with a bow. Bit of a quandry for me... LOL. Guess we'll see when the time comes.

Great day of hunting for me. Saw 8 different toms on the 3 farms I hunted but couldn't quite close the deal with the stick and string yesterday. Closest I was able to get one was about 40 yards after calling him and two hens across a cut bean field for about 200 yards. Just rushed my shot missed clean, have a few other excuses but i'm sure nobody wants to here them, have to check the vidio, well after about an hour with me on the camera, and my brother shooting, (hunterhawks dad) we called in a tom with about a ten in. beard at 6 yds. he missed at 8 yds.he missed and with the tom still struting at 15 yds he missed and all of a sudden I don't feel so :lol:bad, anyway i'm back to my hunting bow with the sight that will light up in the blind and handles better and has never missed a turkey there I got my excuses in.

Another bird down!! I took out Gabe from Michigan Out of Doors and the Marketing Director of Eastman X-Force Crossbows. The crossbow guy was able to take a nice tom with 8 3/4" beard and roughly 3/4" spurs. It was awesome video. We had several toms strutting and gobbling within 20 yards!! You guys should be able to see it on turkey week on MOOD tv.

Tag soup this year for me gang...

My apologies. I blew my one real chance openning morning. Rain and 38 degrees - I was chilled to the bone by 7:30am. I stuck it out until 9am and hadn't heard a single gobble from the roost until then. I took a quick peek out of non-shooting windows, unzipped the door on the blind and stepped out to collect my decoys before heading back into the cabin. A hen about 25-30 yards away jumped straight up into the air and flew off. I was "admirring" her gracefulness (another way to say cursing under my breath at my boneheaded mistake) when movement about 40 yards away caught my eye. A gobbler and 4 hens were sprinting away. All were headed right into my set up. I let the cold/dampness get into my head and just didn't take the time to really check things out before I went out the door of the blind. I was ticked right off at myself. More cold and wet, even a bit of snow, for the rest of the hunt for us. Worked a few gobblers but ran up against another hunter on the neighboring property. Pretty certain it was another hunter - either that or a hen that never moved. We were both working a gobbler until I started to suspect it was another hunter than I shut up. I waited 30 min and listened to the gobbler walk away, I packed up and left. That was the last morning I could hunt so packed it all in and headed out.

I learned a lot and a difficult lesson - for sure. I'm already looking forward to next year.

Closed the deal last night on a nice tom at 20 yards. Saw him, a jake, and 3 hens out in the field after work, I was able to sneak into the woods to my popup blind I have set for evening hunts about 200 yards from the birds without spooking them. 45 minutes of soft cuts and purs him and the jake got to 20 yards. 8 1/2 beard and 1 inch spurs. I hope to have the pictures up tomorrow I forgot my memory card at home this morning. Good luck this weekend everyone!

Way to go Bowtech!!

It's tag soup for me this year...sorry gang. I actually did shoot a nice big tom with a guillotine but upon impact the blades simply sheared off and the bird flew off unharmed. After talking to the manufacturer he said that last year they had a small batch of bad blades get out and that I must have gotten ahold of one somehow after they stripped the shelves of them. So he sent me a new pack free of charge--great customer relations!!

but it doesn't replace the 'what should have been' oh well...next year.

Well its the second day of the season and I still of yet to put a bow in my hand. I am trying to get my dad on a bird first with a crossbow. We had one tom come in at about 30 yards but didnt work out and had three jakes strut and gobblin within 10 yards of us on the first morning. This morning we saw a few different long beards but couldnt close the distance. I may not be able to hunt until the third week in May. My dad and I leave Saturday on an archery bear hunt in Canada this Sunday.

I just got back from my archery bear hunt about an hour ago. I will be going after those crazy birds this week assuming my bow arrives from the Chicago airport tomorrow. Pretty pissed off. none of us got our bows back and the two guys that shot bears havent got the package back with their bears. Hopefully they dont spoil. My dad and I did not get a bear but had a blast

Ok I am just really p-offed right now and need to do some venting. I have been waiting a long time to wait for the moment to stick a nice long beard and had equipment issues. Got set up this morning at 5:45am in blind with my full mounted strutter and a hen. Nothing really happened to about 7am where about 4 hens and one of the biggest toms hanging out on the property start heading our way. Everything worked perfect, the hens and the tom came right into the decoys at 15 yards. I go to full draw and go to anchor my kisser button and notice something is screwed up with my arrow. When i went to draw my arrow was not on my drop away rest. So when I came to full draw the arrow was on the riser and the rage broadhead opened up when it hit the riser. By this time the tom saw enough of the setup and started to walk off. So i had to nock another arrow and managed to get a shot off when he was at about 30 yards. The arrow went left and I must of pulled the shot. It was an interesting morning and very frustrating. Im going to let this bird rest for a few days and head up norht to hunt.

That's too bad, there are a lot of variables when bow hunting, it is not just point and bang. There is still plenty of season left. Where did you go bear hunting at?

Bird Down!! I shot a nice bird with my bow yesterday. I will try to get the pics posted this weekend. He measured at 9.5" with both hooks at 1" or a touch over. This was my first bird with a bow which was a great one. That morning I had two other toms and jakes with several hens work their way towards my setup. I started talking nasty to some of the hens which brought about 4 hens right into my dekes at 10 yards. Unfortunately the two large toms hung up at 50 yards chasing the jakes around. While they were separated from the hens a third long bear worked in closer to try to intercept the hens. He got close as he was going to get which was 30 yards on the dot. He was broadside in half strut when I let it fly and the arrow dropped him right in his tracks. I really didnt think anything was going to happen that morning but it worked out great. I will get the pics up soon as I can!

I was up in Carrot River, Sasketchawan with my dad and a buddy. It was a great hunt and saw lots of bears but nothin that was big enough. Over 6 days of hunting I counted at least 27 different bears! My one buddy shot one that was 300 lbs and another guy in camp shot one that was 409lbs. Both were great lookin bears.
