Well guys, were getting closer!!
I've been out alot lately walking around, scouting and practicing with the bow....
Pretty much destroyed my 3d turkey target (lot's of holes in it and I've had to glue the head back on a few times and insert a thin metal rod for support in it's neck):dizzy:....I've practiced every shot I can imagine just to try and prepare myself for whatever Mr. Gobbler throws at me.....

Just thought I'd start a thread up for us...

Good luck guys!

What's up duck!

I signed us in earlier this morning and will work on a signature for our team this year.

I haven't seen much sign lately, but I've been downing a number of trees in the area I'll be hunting to start setting up a small food plot in the middle of the woods, so it's been a little noisy there lately. But I'll be stopping that in the next few weeks to let the woods settle down and I'm sure they'll be back in. They're usually not there anyways until the snow's melted.

Sounds good on the signature....
I've been seeing alot of sign, lots of scratching, lots of tracks and quite a few birds.....We even saw a tom strutting a little today:confused::yikes: I couldn't believe my eyes......Were hoping to get a food plot in this spring as well on the same property....Nothing huge, just something for us to hunt over this bow season and congregate the deer a little more....we have to do a little clean up, but with the snow we can't really do a whole lot....with all the sign in the area we may be planting a little later then what we want to but it'll be worth it :D

My hunt is only for 6 days.....and I'll be hunting private land....so I contacted the DNR and questioned whether or not I could purchase a ZZ license over the counter even though I was successful in the draw and I was told yes I could...so I'm actually thinking on doing that instead...

Apparently MAMA has abosultely nothing to do he's on every teams thread in the contest. :dizzy: Dude go bother your own team.;)

There are 4 big toms where we are hunting saw em yesterday. They were there all deer season and seemed to have stuck around. There is also 2 other big toms that hang with a jake must be to make themselves look bigger kinda like mama hangin out at the elementary school. I could have taken any of those toms during the fall hunt but passed em up and took a hen and so did DL just so we might get them this spring for the contest. Hey Mama I'll send ya a pic of my upper body not an ounce of fat will you see pal and thats at 51 years old or ya could just ask the ladies they all know.

Guess I shoulda mentioned that I've spent alot of time walking around the properties that we plan on hunting and were seeing alot of sign...
The one property is a known breeding area for the turkeys and they are just starting to show up in that area so that's a good sign...
Saw a couple nice toms that have anywhere from 8-10inch beards...but thats a guess, they could be a little longer.....
the other morning, while out looking around the one property my buddy and I (glad he was with me and heard it to because I would have never believed it) heard one gobble which REALLY got the blood pumping....

It's deff. going to be interesting to see how things turn out!

melvvin
03-13-2009, 10:21 PM
I have only had time to drive by the property me and dl are hunting, the first morning nothing went by about 8:30 this morning there stood one huge lone tom in the owners yard right by where we are hunting. I swear it might be the dumbest turkey I have ever seen tried to run 4 directions when I stopped in the road then just froze and looked at me. It has a very long beard well over 10inches hopefully dl's bird the first morning.

Hey Melvvin....I wouldn't let him take the shot first. You should hear him talk about how he can "out do" the old man when it comes to hunting ! He says this everytime I visit his plant. Ya betta have a talk with that son of yours !:lol:

Yeah should have seen me wipe his eye duckhunting on the bay. I don't think I missed once out there. On the other hand dl missed a lot even the buffies on the water but I 'm sure thats not the story he tells at work. He keeps running his mouth I will just tell his mommy and she will knock some sense into his head.

I know its early yet but I did another drive by scouting trip where I'm hunting yesterday morning. The place was loaded with birds saw at least 30 hens and 9 big toms 2 were following the hens and strutting. Man its way to early to be seeing this I will never make it 5 more weeks.

03-24-2009, 09:57 PM

This weather has been screwing with me though...just when I get the birds patterned out the weather changes and they change with it...like this morning...I went out to listen and watch where the birds usually are...of course they weren't there, but had moved about 600-700 yards down and to a new tree.....and then they also changed their routine as well...back to the drawing board I guess lol

A few days late , but Happy Easter to you to DB.

Was out listening this morning. Birds were gobbling all over. Seems to be quite a few birds made it through the winter. I saw 3 or 4 flocks this winter with over 100 birds and was wondering how many of them would make it through.
Hope we all have a good season. Let's win this thing !

It's almost here!

I've got a couple of nice Tom's picked out. Been having a lot of activity. Unfortunately I won't be able to make it out opening day, but I'll be out on Tuesday.

They're gobbling all around me right now. Sitting out on the deck, I can hear them before dusk out in the swamp, making their way to the roosting trees.

duckbuster808
04-16-2009, 12:33 PM
I won't be able to make it out until the afternoon opening day due to college classes  Going out tomorrow morning to check a few different spots...
I've got a group of 12 birds pretty well pegged and 7 of them are pretty nice toms. It's just a matter of being able to get to hunt them in the morning. Because they roost on private property I can't hunt and cross over to this area in the morning aroun 9-10am....Only 3 more days!

Well, 1 MORE DAY GUYS!!!!

Went out this morning...decided a opening day of turkey was more important then class :16suspect....
Roosted 11 toms (all strutting of course!) :D and 7 hens all in one group last night so I had to get out there for the opener....Sat in the rain all morning without hearing a gobble so I decided to get up and move......ended up seeing the birds but they had flown down and gone to the field next door to where I was hunting and that I don't have permission for so hopefully they'll be back in the field they were in last night....there's a couple dandy's in the group.
Getting all dried out and then heading back out in a few hours......

dlbaldwin01
04-20-2009, 02:51 PM
Melvvin and I went out this morning.
Had a real nice tom walk by about 100yds away, he was with a handful of hens and wouldn't leave them. He walked away with the hens and went out into the adjacent property that we can't hunt.
Heard a gobble after some calling at around 11 and had 5 jakes walk right into the decoy. Heard another tom behind us while the stupid jakes were right in front of us, but he wouldn't come in. Left a little after 12 and thats it for the day, birds were real quiet no gobbles from the roost this morning. Melvvin is going in the morning tomorrow, I can't go untill after I get out of work. Should get nothing but better after this rain quits, looks nice towards the end of the week. Hopefully we fill some tags soon. :coolgleam

Got a real nice Tom for my 1st hunter this morn. Al took a bird 10 in beard, 1 in spurs, just over 20 lbs. Saw him about 7:20 and he was on the opposite side of the field. He was'nt moving much, then had 7 hens and 3 jakes come out and started to pull him south but sweet talked him with the slutty hen box call and once he turned he came right into our single hen. One shot put him down for good at 7:50. I have some pics i havent loaded yet.
Went out to another spot about 10:30 till 3 and only saw on hen.
I have only heard one gobble today, I think this weather has them pretty tight lipped.
Good luck all and let us know!!

Dont worry , I'll get mine sometime soon.....;)

Got to within 100yards of the same group of birds we saw this morning but that was as close as we would get.....They didn't make a peep until about 15 minutes before time to fly up and then they started gobbling....once they flew up all hell broke loose and we had all the gobblers going off.....waited til dark to get out of the area....Heading back there bright and early in the morning...Going to connect sooner or later :D

Well, as promised here is the story....
My buddy Cody and I hunted yesterday and saw the birds in the morning....we weren't able to get close enough for a shot so decided to give it a go in the afternoon. The birds didn't make a peep until about time time to fly up and they gobbled left and right. We were able to put the birds to bed and decided to chase them in the morning. We both had class at 9 so we knew it had to be a pretty quick hunt. We got to within 60 yards of the roosting birds this morning and watched them wake up and fly down. They were across an area of flooded timber from us and we called and watched them come to the edge which was about 70 yards across from us and strut back and forth, breed a couple of the hens in the group and gobble their heads off but they refused to cross.
The boss hen flew down and headed north of us and every single bird in the group followed. we thought we were done when about 20 minutes later we hear them gobbling at the far end of the field. We decided to pick up and quickly move down. We watched the birds work up over the crest of a hill and decided to try and sneek on them. We begin to crest the hill when all of a sudden to toms pop up over the hill they don't see us and are both strutting, they turn their backs so I draw back my bow and put it on the bigger of the two birds, there only about 20 yards from us and as the bird turns sideways I let the arrow fly. It hit it's mark, and the Rage 3 blade did the damage. The bird took 3 steps and dropped. As soon as Cody heard me release my arrow he pulled up his shotgun and gave the other tom (a jake) a 2 ounce load of number 4's dropping him in his tracks....we begin walking towards the birds and as we come over the top of the hill, Turkeys are EVERYWHERE! there had to be 20-25 turkeys running and taking flight. All in all it was a great hunt and I filled my tag! :D
Goodluck to the rest of you! Hopefully you'll have the same luck as I did.

Scored on a nice Tom tonight. It wasn't any of the ones I've scouted, and it definately wasn't the biggest, but he was a game player. I'll put the full story tomorrow, but he had 4 beards, 3/4" spurs and played a hell of a game with me. This was the best hunt I've ever had! Rought estimate for the contest he should score around 65. I'll give the full update tomorrow (or I should say later today)

Good job DB and Boogemaster way to go. I am getting ready to head out again this morning. It has been very frustrating so far this season. The toms are big time hened up where I am hunting and will not respond so far to any of my calling. The biggest problem is they are all roosting right by my blind flying down then heading the other way can't hunt there though because the neighbors house is right there. I haven't been able to hunt an evening though so me and dl are gonna tonight hopefully catch em coming back to the roost will make a difference.

Hey Booge, Snood Panzies! Seems to me that we had no issues with the weather on Monday like some other people did. We can even put down birds in bad weather, just think how good we would be in good weather!

It wasn't the best weather, so I hunkered down in my blind. It sits near a path they use on their way to roost. About 6:40, a couple of hens came up from behind me and to the right and milled about for 10 minutes. That's when I heard my first gobble. The hens didn't respond at all, so I left out 4 soft clucks and he gobbled back. Meanwhile the hens move off so I waited another 15 minutes and let out a few more. He gobbled back and was closer. 5 minutes later, 2 more hens came from the same direction and did the same as the first. This time they were talking to the gobbler and he was getting closer. They walked off to my left and now I was getting worried the Tom would be following after them. I let out a few more and he gobbled back and this time it sounded like he was right behind me. I have that window closed so I couldn't see exactly where he was. About 10 minutes later I see him coming from behind me and to the right and then noticed the second one (which is the one I shot). They kept working they way to the right and out of shooting range. I lowered my gun to grab the slate call to try and entice him back. As soon as I let out a few clucks I noticed a lone hen to left and she stopped directly in front of me and started scratching around. She was the perfect live decoy and the Toms made there way back. I waited for them to get to my opening and let him have it. All in all it lasted about 45 minutes from the first gobble I heard and it's the first time I was actually able to talk a little to the turkeys. I picked this guy becuase I noticed a really "wide" beard. It wasn't one of the 2 I had scouted, but it was an exception I couldn't pass up. I'm taking a buddy out for his first time on Thursday and hopefully I can hook him up with one of the big boys.

Good luck to the rest of you! (Minus the Snood Chicks )

He weighed in just under 21 lbs.

Well guys another frustrating day yesterday. Got out half hour before light but the toms roosted across the road so they gobbled solid till they flew down and must have went away from me. I never heard another bird all morning left the woods at 12:30 for lunch birds were walking everywhere along the road to home so I hurried. Got back around 1:30 a couple hours later think I hear a gobble the wind was blowing and it was hard to hear. Turned out it was a gobble and he was coming hung up aways out but I talked him in to coming in walked just a few feet from my blind turned out to be a young bird about a 6in beard so I let him go he struted around for nearly an hour then left. Dl came out at 4:30 half hour before time we hear a gobble, behind us come 2 big toms with 5 hens so I am thinking double. They come our way but the hens decide to stay out about 80 yards I try every call I know give em some loud cackles and that fires them up esp. 1 of the hens she comes running in but the others keep feeding and the toms won't leave them. Watched em walk away then time was up so we snuck out. Decided to leave em alone this morning and wait till afternoon since no one else can hunt there.

There's always another day! At least to May 3.

Took a friend out hunting last night and he was able to score on a nice Tom. It was fun to be out again and do a little calling for him. I sound like crap, but the turkey's seem to respond. I had 2 tom's come in after 45 minutes of lite calling (15 minutes between small series). They came booking in right to us, no gobbling or anything. I didn't get a chance to see them come in, because my chair broke and I was sitting on the ground. I heard some noise outside and I whispered to my buddy and said "those aren't squirrels" and he nodded back to me and got his gun ready. They started walking away and few more yelps, they came back and that was all.

Before the other 2 got there , he started puttin' and left. That stopped the others.
Called in two others about that size sunday morning. My shooter took one. They had about 1/2 dozen jakes with them.
Took today off to do some " honey-do's ". I'll be back at it tomorrow.

Looks like I am going to have a tough time of keeping my long string of harvesting a nice tom each year intact. The hunting just like the weather this weekend was not good. Me and DL hunted saturday morning and had stubby beard cruise right in he might have a 6in beard DL decided to let him walk. Seen at least 15 hens but none of them had a tom in tow and we heard zero gobbling the rest of the day. Went back out sunday pretty much waded out to hunt and had a nice bearded hen walk right in prolly a good 7in of beard but again Dl passed saw a nice tom with 4 hens a few minutes later but he showed no interest in my calling or setup plus all the water he would have to navigate to get to us. We have decided to take stubby if he shows up again but I think he met his end sunday as a shot to the north went off on the neighboring property prolly him as he was easy. Its been suprising with all the toms using the area it hasn't been better then this but I am pretty sure the boys across the road practiced there calling the weekend before in the cut cornfield and educated the toms. The big boys just will not respond to calling what so ever. We have this weekend left and hopefully it will get better.

Without writing it all out , this is excatly the way my season is going!
No gobbling, see a few, mostly hens, i passed on three big jakes last weekend but with no tom action and time winding down that might change next time around!;)
I have even been hunting for a hour or so in the morn before i have to be to work at 7:30. Saw 7-8 hens this morn with nothing in tow.
I have been out every night, some of my best spots the birds just disappered, probally cause thier F-ing flooded!! Tonight is probally my last shot to go with my 11 yr old daughter, i would really like to see her get a chance. It is more fun taking someone else out, isn't it.

I had a great hunt with my wife this morning, I posted in the Snoods thread. Last year was her first hunt ever and it was over too quick. This year we are dragging it out, and she enjoys that more than getting one. Her 20 gauge makes it a challenge, but we have yet to have a shot over 20 yards so it is just perfect. No decoys, no blind by the way.

Good luck with your dad, this weekend should be red hot. The birds were really fired up this morning and gobbled until the shot at 9 AM.

That was the one thing I fell in love with about hunting, it's always a good time and the kill is the icing on the cake. I'm working on getting the wife also to sit(working here in slowly), but it's hard with the little ones. Maybe if I clean up the dog kennel, the kids would have a spot for a few hours without causing too much trouble.

Her dad came over at 5:30 AM this morning and even took the daughter to school and sat with her brother until we got back. 4 and 6 - been there, doing it.

I don't have issues with the wife sitting. Last Thursday AM, she fell asleep about 30 minutes into our morning, toms on two sides of us, gobbling. I whisper "get ready, here they come, get your gun up" and she is zonked, leaning against a dirt embankment.:dizzy:

Thanks guys.
One of the easiest hunts I've had.
Spotted him struttin' in a field next to some property I have permission to hunt. Ran around the other side of the section to where I have permission and snuck up to within 20 yards of the fence. Was in Christmas trees and that was as close as I could get without them seeing me. He had 3 hens with him.
He was 100 yards out in the field when I started calling. Broke strut and came my way. I thought " No way ". I couldn't believe my eyes. He stopped and strutted a couple times , and gobbled a couple times , but other than that , he came right in. I kept thinking , with my luck , he should "hang up " anytime now. But he didn't. When he came through the fencerow , I shot him. Took maybe 15 minutes.
Bad thing was , the grandson had a track meet , so he wasn't there with me.
I saw 2 more really nice toms this morning while scouting. Got a hunter coming up tomorrow , so maybe we can get a crack at another one.
If we get a good one , I'll post pictures here. ( If you guys want to see them )

Good luck to all our team members. We're gonna win this time !

Well sorry guy's...

This is the 1st year since 2002 i have not bagged a tom.
Saturday morn had 2 toms gobbling in the woods on the other side of the powerlines. Powerlines are flooded, they aint commin" sat till noon didnt see or hear anything after that.
Saturday night didnt see anything didnt hear anything.
Sunday morn, 1 distant gobble about 7:30, saw 1 hen about 9:30.
Sunday night, sat in a corner of a old soybean field watching the north edge.
6:50 had a hen come out and feed right next to my decoy (1) for quite a while. She moves to the west and sits with just her head above the weeds.
After watching her for a while, she suddenly snaps her head around to the north, i watch as six more hens go join her. Now they are about 65-70 yrds out in front of me. I give a few clucks on the box and hear a gobble right behind me. I throw the call down and shoulder the SuperMag. 4 jakes bust out the corner going full tilt to the hens , i make loud cluck sounds with my mouth hopeing 1 will stop and put his head up but it seemed to make them run faster. They did not come back as they drifted into the woodlot. Even unzipped the tent and made a beeline for the woods and lyed down in the mud hoping they would come my way for a shot... nope. I thought if i would of just started blasting as soon as i saw the on the run i probally would have got one...(or two).... but thats just not me...
So sorry guy i had the worst weirdest season ever so far...

Congrats to all that have scored and if you can tell im pissed im not going to have marinated wild turkey breast wrapped in bacon over the charcoal fire!!!

It was an awesome evening as far as action went. Had a tom show up 20 minutes after we sat, but he held up at about 40 yards. We weren't ready and I was trying to teach my dad how to be quiet and NOT talk too much. He went a couple of times in the fall to deer hunt, but it was later in the season and crappy weather. He was only able to get out twice (he lives 2 hours from me) and never saw anything. So after the first turkey left, he said if nothing else happens, he was just happy to have seen a wild turkey up close.

Not much excitement until a few hours later, about 45 minutes before dusk and 2 hens come in. Could only get a little talking back and forth until this, but one of these hens had about an 8 in. scraggly beard. I whispered to him she was legal, but my dad really wanted to get a Tom. No more than finishing his sentence, he taps me and holds up 2 fingers, and his eyes were huge! I couldn't see them yet, but he started getting ready. I finally saw them and they both were big birds. He settled on the larger one and was waiting for him to clear a few trees. This was one of the two I saw preseason (at least I think it was because of the spur and beard coloration, but not a 100% sure). Both were struttin' for the ladies behind the trees for what seemed like 10 minutes. I glance over at my dad and saw his arm starting to waiver for holding the gun up so long. I reached my hand to the bottom side of the barrel to give him a rest, a couple of minutes pass by, and they walked out from behind the trees and he let him have it. The other took off about 5 yards, then came back and jumped on the other showing him "who's the boss now!". It was a great hit and no shot to the body. He flopped for about 20 seconds and was done. I couldn't have been prouder!

So, his first experience hunting turkey, he got to see turkey, a bearded hen, turkey talkin', strutting tom's and laying a smack down on a huge bird. I was more excited than he was, because he didn't realize how big his trophy was. He does now and it's going to be hard to top that one. All in all, I think we have a new turkey hunter to our ranks and I think the smile on his face says it all!

I remember the first bird I called in for my Dad. 10" beard and just (1) 1 9/16 spur. He was content with jakes after that.:lol::lol:

Sorry it took me so long to post my hunting results I have been busy working making up for taking the last 5 days of my hunt off. My string of 13 seasons of success came to an end with the last couple of days being but a few yards from connecting on a monster tom sorry guys but I did my best. Actually could of shot the big one along side the road legally but it was not the way I wanted to take him. That sure is a dandy your dad got Boogemaster congrats.

That IS a nice bird !
Congrats to your dad !

Sprytle , melvvin - No problem guys.
Don't really matter to me. It's just fun to have a group of guys to root for , and have a thread like this to talk back and forth on. As far as I'm concerned , you're all still winners.

I've got a buddy and his wife coming up from Oklahoma for the week of the 18th. Gonna try and help them fill their tags.
And maybe LarryA can't get over here for an "almost old farts" day. He's got a tag yet.:lol::lol:

100% agree with Bob. I'm glad you guys picked me back up. I like hearing both the successes and failures. That's what helps us all to learn and strive to do better. I've learned so much from this site that I would have never have learned on my own, at least in such a short amount of time.

Yup I struck out too. I blame it all on melvvins calling skills:evilsmile. NOT REALLY, we both hunted our butts off and the toms just seemed to be not interested. Oh well we have the fall hunt to try and make up for the spring. Hopefully, next year the weather is a little more normal and we can connect with one or two of the big guys we saw this year.

Boogemaster you could probably win the contest with all the birds you called in this year.:yikes: Congrats on a great season guys.
