You may call it oldest, I would probably say "wisest". Hell, I've probably got underwear older than some of you "wet behind the ears" wannabe turkey hunters. Funny how guys will lash out in all directions in response to obvious jealousy. When the dust all settles I think it will be obvious how experience and wisdom beat out youth and braggadociousness! If that wasn't a word, it is now! The cream always rises to the top!

The '08 contest winner that old Smoke missed last year is still wandering around there tripping over his beard. He'll be a good score for the Dudes in '09!

Ok, here we go again! Yes, SMOKE - I do believe (the photo Horseshoe got) is one of the two that you missed, in fact I recall seeing that bird bust into the wide open a mere 30 yards from the end of your gun barrel! That photo was taken about 150 yards from where the "incident" occurred! I guess 2nd place is better than last place!

I was thinking that Cass or Hawk could of drilled it easily with their bow. However, they are much younger than you. Maybe we should organize a gun sight in day this year!:lol: I just recall that shot my wife made with the 20 gauge, and do recall us sighting in before her first ever hunting trip.

Booge - why is it that whenever I get on a team with Big T, we have to have pink coloring in our signature logo.:16suspect Seems to be a tendency:16suspect, and nature has its way of producing what you think, so I hope that T is not thinking anything on the strange side.:16suspect

He invited me "over to his place" to hunt if I wanted.:16suspect:tdo12:

Hey, before I start talking smack, maybe I ought to check to be sure I drew a permit!:yikes: Well, 234 will be fine.

When do you start using clive's method of turkey retention and tree submsission??

It has been about 5 years now since the "system" has been fully implemented on my property. With his retention program, old gobblers have found that it makes no sense trying to beat the pattern, and therefore find themselves constantly making a figure eight. His new method, the triple six, is even more effective. In his latest release, he has found that he can control not only the movements of the mature gobblers, but also the breeding hens. Pretty amazing stuff!

I know that Big T is pretty tight lipped about the program, but check out the number of gobblers he is able to maintain in the small river bottom near his house, when there are miles of similar bottomland through the whole area.

After implementing it, I have found very similar results. (Big T is the one who turned me onto this by the way). The problem is that the season ends up being really short, when you get the birds stacked up on you like that. This year I am going to try using a spear!

By the way, I failed to mention, T's head is really not that big, he just has a lot of forehead space. When he was a child his siblings used to lift him up by his ears.

Glad to hear that all of those habitat improvements you have been working on are paying off. I've got an atlatl you can borrow if you don't have a spear.

After using Clive's techniques, I am thinking I won't even need a weapon once I institute 666.

Hey, is this an MS fishing tourney photo I found in your gallery. I bet T will like the shorts I am wearing! FishNazi brought us some luck that day. I recall winning that one.

Let's hope not. Just the thought makes me entertain thoughts of gouging my eyes out!

Wow, what a nice weekend after a long winter. Wish I could have made it out fishing, but had to get the boat ready for Trenton. She's in ship shape now though! The new trolling motor is all mounted and wired up, the boat is all cleaned up and ready to get slimed with walleye spawn! Trailer lights are working. Maybe a little air in the tires and I'm ready to go. Hard to think about turkeys with that nice vacation / fishing trip on the horizon.

Well Dudes, Sunday morning was the first chance this year I've been able to witness the sunrise on my porch with a cup-o-joe. The gobblers were rattlin the river bottom for a mile north...and south of the Smith ponderosa. This is going to be waaaaaay to easy!:D
I've seen some of the biggest toms I've ever seen this spring. I thought the deep snows would raise hell with beard lengths but it looks like they're in tact and draaaaaggin. The pour bastards can hardly walk without tripping over their spurs.:yikes:
I'll get my bootcamp behind me then start the process of picking out the biggest bird for the contest.;)

I am just waiting to get this thing started!!!!
I went to the new Cabela's in Hammond on Sunday to scope it out.(I liked it better that the bass pro)
I scored a new pair of boot's,pop up blind and some 10ga shells for the turkey cannon.
What's the chance of us getting together and shooting (patterning) our wepon's???...I have a few different shells I need to shoot.

I have also been tiring to get all the "stuff" around the house done so when it's time the wife cant *itch.

Friday morning while enjoying my high fibre cereal with rice milk (I'm lactose intolerant) and a cup of joe I was entertained by a large group of birds with a half dozen LARGE strutters taking part in their spring ritual just outside the kitchen window. LIFE IS GRAND:)!

I also talked to a life long friend of mine this morning (also my venison processor). He just had his prostate removed and will under go radiation starting this week. He's only ever shot Jakes and I've been inviting him out for years to hunt birds with me. Well, he's got a goal this year to kill a longbeard, a gator, and a boar, so he gets first dibs on my time this year in the ZZ hunt. Funny how something like cancer changes one's priorities.

Where are all of the young guys this morning????

I put the photos in the picture thread, I THINK in the right location but was not sure, there did not seem to be any other birds posted from any young, smack talking guys on the other team.

Here are a couple of shots. I need to do some touch up work to them, but off to work - Can't wait to see FishNazi's bird this afternoon.

10 3/8" beard and 1" spurs, gives us 45 points for a start. Need to get some longer spurred birds, but I was not going to pass him by. Left the house at 6:38 AM this morning, had to camo up and get the gear at the Turkey Shack, and then headed out, but he seemed to be located all alone near the Legendary Roost site so he was easy to find. One call on my wet slate, he came gobbling his head off, and the rest is history. Shot him at 7:45 AM.

Only turkey I saw this morning, but I guess only one I needed. My wife was "chilled" this morning and decided not to tag alone. I will get her out later this week. Go get em Snoods! Koz

I have been walking around telling everyone that cares about turkeys about that damn bird you shot. That is like me shooting the turdy pointer during the deer season. I shot this guy right about 8:00. Didn't hear much of anything this morning early, maybe one gobble in the distance. Set up three times for about a half hour at each spot, with no action. Decided to move over to a clearing and see if any birds were working that area. When I got close to the clearing I could have sworn I heard a gobble back where I had just come from. A little later I again thought I heard a gobble. I started working back that way and then I definitely heard a gobble that sounded like it was right where I had been set up. I was wishing I would have stuck that spot out a little longer, but made my way about half the way back. There was an area that was fairly clear, so I picked a tree and plopped down. After I made a series of yelps, he sounded off about 10 seconds later. I did that again after a couple of minutes and he did the same, but he sounded like he was coming my way. In fact just after that I spied his white head bobbing through the woods. He kind of went into a little strut for a minute, so I turned away and let out a couple of light yelps. He walked right in to about 25 yards after that. He was looking around wondering where all the women were at when I let him have it. Poor fella!

11 1/2" beard to the longest hair, and 7/8 inches on both spurs. I have to tell you I was thinking more about a McDonalds breakfast sandwich than I was about turkey hunting until I heard that gobble!

Wow, what a wonderful morning of turkey hunting today. My wife and I headed out to the turkey shack at 5:40 AM this morning arrived a 6 AM, and had not stop gobbling all the way until a "swing and a miss" at 9 AM.

Had 3 long beards within 12 yards or so, and the biggest one (he was a real dandy) at 8 yards for what seemed like an eternity. After spooking him, trying to get the gun into position, I called him back and we had a low shot at 20 yards.

We saw action all this morning. A couple of bucks with nubs starting to form, a group of does, wood ducks nesting in several trees all around us, rooster pheasants cackling, a big ole owl swooped on by, squirrels within a few feet that have a weight problem, and got pinned down until 8 AM by two big hens above us. They were talking non-stop and jumping from tree to tree. They eventually calmed down and landed in front of us, and fed around for a while.

It was a great day to be in the woods, and honestly, my wife clearly could care less about the miss, or getting a bird for that matter, she just enjoyed, as she states "all the action, it was non-stop" and she also said she could just sit out there all day without a gun and call them in.

After the shot, the tom she poked at, sat up in the tree at about 70 yards, giving us plenty of time to review his stats. Over 23 lbs, 11 to 12 inches on his paint brush beard, spurs 1 1/8 to 1 1/2". A real whopper. Seems like the big ones are the ones that always get away. The other two long beards with him were in that same category. I have not seen birds this big on my land since last spring.

The hens are definitely not sitting yet, so this should be an excellent weekend in the woods. I hope we can get out one more time before her permit expires, but if not, we will always have great memories of the morning hunt!

We were blessed this morning with a great hunt. Mr Tom was just a little more blessed than we were!

Well, I took the neighbor out last night to one of my favorite afternoon spots. Arrived at around 6:45 and set a hen deke in a 2 track and we each took a side of the track. He's a lefty so I placed him so he could shoot toward an open fly up area as well as being able to view the far end of the 2 track toward a large green field. A couple of yelps and clucks and then quiet, 30 minutes later a hen appeared and approached the deke for a closer look. I fully expected the hunt to end soon after but she was alone. Around 8:00 I see a red head standing in the 2 track and I glance at my buddy only to see he's relaxed with his gun proped up against a tree. A quick glance back at the bird and then back at my buddy only to see him shifting to get comfortable. BUSTED.
The bird came in quiet as a mouse and left quick and quiet. He was a jake but I think he would have been dead if things went as planned.
I'll try again tomorrow morning with my friend Jeff if his radiation treatment hasn't got the best of him then it's off to the happy antler hunting grounds for my annual trip.
I'll be back at it bright and early Monday morning with a close friend I've been trying to get in front of a bird for 3 years. We'll have a 2 hour interuption for a visit from a good friend named Tony L. at 8 a.m. for a couple hours :D and then it's back at it.
From the nashing of teeth and renting of close that's going on in some of the other team threads, it sounds like the weak are caving to the pressure.

Ps Horseshoe when are you taking Gage hunting??

I already did. I found out that I couldn't just buy a 234 tag over the counter, so had to get him a ZZ tag when that hunt was already half over. DSconnell was kind enough to have us stay at his place Friday night, and manage to put us on a bird Saturday. Gage took a shot at a jake, but missed. I think he was a little rattled by the whole experience, but it was a very cool hunt. He got to hear a lot of morning gobbling and saw plenty of birds, just didn't come together. I took him out yesterday, we heard a lot of birds but nothing would come in to the property we had permission to hunt. Maybe next year!

I set up right behind the house and was sitting by 5:30. At 6:00 the gobbling started with out any help from me.
The river bottom where the birds have been roosting has been under water for the last week and when I was back there Friday morning it was at it's highest point. After spending the weekend up north I expected the water to be equally as high but when the sun came up I realized it had receded a bit. Non the less the birds pitched out into the field instead of the open (and dry) flydown area were I was positioned. I played cat and mouse with them until after 9:00 as they continued to head north through the neighbors woods gobbling regularly until after 8:30.
I headed in grabbed a quick bite of breakfast and then headed to my lease, which borders the neighbor on the north side.
As I entered the woods I got about 50 yards in and noticed a full fan strutting on the edge of the woods and the field so I hit the ground against a dead fall, got cumfy, gun positioned, and slate out.
A soft cluck and a couple lite yelps got his attention and got him looking but he continued to strut, obviously with a hen. It was now about 10:00 so I thought I'd wait him out and hopefully the hen would be headed to a nest. As this was unfolding 3 toms had heard my sweet talking and crashed the party. I didn't realize it but there was several Toms and the 2 biggest circled me to the right and behind and had pinpointed me. The 4 toms in front began moving into the woods but slightly to the left about 100 yards out so I reached down to give them a soft yelp and that's when I heard the alarm go off behind me. BUSTED!
Luckily the 4 I was watching followed after the 2 that tagged me and they strolled right in front of me. At 40 yards I took the lead longbeard and let him have it. He went down immediately.
As the other birds were trying to figure out what had just happened I sat tight so I didn't spook them. That's when 2 of the toms headed back to check on their buddy. As 1 of the other longbeards proceeded to jump on my bird he revived and started running toward me with his bully right behind in full strut. Another round dropped him and I was lined up on the strutter as he looked confused. I whispered that it was his lucky day as he vacated the woods gobbling as he went.
Stats 11.25" beard with 1" spurs and 20#.
Smoke and Bucky bring us home bruthas!

Well I got-r-done last night:
Got to mom's at 4:30 by 5 haf and I were on our way out. Got to the edge of the big woods and called a few times..no response. Worked our way down the wood line and softly yelping here and there along the way..no response.
Made our way to the 1st cut corn field..no birds.
Worked down the tree line to the 2nd cut corn field..no birds. There is drainage ditches on each side with a land bridge for the tractors to cross.
We started our way across the second cut corn field looking out in to the 3rd cut corn field. About 1/2 way across we look at each other and say theres the birds.
There was a flock of around 15 birds and 4 were STRUTTER'S.
The only way into that field is the land bridge or threw the drainage ditch. If we tried to get to the land bridge we would be busted for sure. We decided to sneak down the wood line and try to get as close to the drainage ditch as we could. The ditch has smaller trees and under brush along it. We worked our way to the edge of the ditch. The birds were about 80 yards out. We looked at the best option to get a shot from this side of the ditch. We then belly crawled about 50 yards. The birds were moving closer to us as we made out way in to position. There was a south breeze that would pick up now and again so we used that to make our stalk. Finally got into a spot where I could make a shot threw the brush. The birds were still about 70 yards out. They would work there way toward us then away back and fourth. The hens started to go in to the wood so i figured when they all went in to the wood we could move and get into a better position on the other side of the ditch. Well the hens went in to the woods but the 4 toms stayed on the edge strutting there stuff. I told haf to give a few soft yelps....then a few more.
Then the hens started to pop out of the wood 1 by 1 and working there way toward us. The birds worked there way to the corner of the ditch and wood about 30 yards out,but we could no longer see them. Every time I would nod at haf he would softly yelp. I could see the toms white head every once in a while threw the brush. Then behind up to the right we here a hen yelp. She made her way into the fiend we we in and at 30 yards. Haf was laying on his belly 15 yards out in the open field while I was on mt belly on the edge of the drainage ditch. I figured we were busted or even worse what if the all come in the field> I would have no shot and they could walk right over haf. Well the hen turned back around and went back into the other field. Now it was the waiting game. They had to make there way down the ditch line for me to get a shot. Finally I see a bird moving my way picking at the ground along the way. He was standing up right and I could see had a beard but it looked about 3" long. I thought to my self *hit a Jake!! Then he started feeding again and his bird swung out to I could see it...shooter for sure. I let him walk in to the best opening in the brush and ....BOOM light's out. It was now 6:30 and my tag was full.

Congrats Big T! Looks like a fine grand daughter. You'll be able to tell her she was born the first year the Dudes won the turkey contest and began their domination!

Dude's
I used the NWTF scoring calculator and scored my bird. It scored 76.37 the would be good enough for #7 in the state in the category I selected. Remind me next year to call one of you local guys before I turn him in to turkey nuggets.:o:mad::eek::yikes::dizzy::xzicon_sm:sick: :help:

This whole team turkey killing thing has me thinking. Most of you talked a lot of junk with stinky reinke and he with all of you. I chose to stay away from it for the most part. Well, you all shot a bird, stinky shot a bird and I am left looking at your photos. HMMMMM. Must be something to this.:) Congrats to all of you on your successful hunts this spring. Talk to you all in about 9 months:evil:

Getting involved in all the trash talking gives you that much more incentive to back up the smack!

QDMAMAN, Congrats on the beautiful grandaughter.

It's all in good fun. I prefer to refer to it as smack talkin not trash talkin and if anybody was offended it was certainly not my intention...except for Cass.:lol::lol:
I'm looking forward to Saturday and having my best friend and BIL down from Gaylord. He's the one that got me started turkey hunting in 96 or 97 and it's been waaaaay to long since we've turkey hunted together.
Then it's off to GA to see the new granddaughter!!!:D:D:D

Good luck this weekend and have a safe trip to GA. If you leave early enough for the 1yr birthday party next year, I believe the GA turkey season ends on 5/15 every year. Just a thought!

Any time there's a player like Ack in the game you take a deep breath!
To bad he had to "settle" for such a great bird.
I can see it now ACK and FireFighter sitting in a pop up with Ruger. Firefighter calling and Ack with a spotting scope on the spurs of any prospective bird.
What a blast!

A real friend would never tell! Might even ask to take a joy ride himself.....

The fools have to shoot a major set of spurs to compete with Smoke's bird! I must admit that is a nice bird Ack shot, and some sweet video footage. I thought about trying it with a bow this year. That thought lasted about 15 seconds or so.

Well, we were thinking Friday afternoon at the shack and an eveing cookout. Tony is bringing the pecans for the stuffed walleye fillets. I don't think that supplying walleye fillets will be a problem. (Smoke, you on em over there, you been awful quiet about it this year - I have heard things)

We will throw in some turkey breast fillets, and maybe pull a few trout out of the creek for a side dish, and we should be all set. Since Fishnazi is the new guy on the team, I propose he provide the brew!

Bucky is going to bring the moped and the fatty's and we will be all set.

Ohh, I will throw in some morels for good measure, assuming they are not all eaten by the time we meet.

Cass is coming along as well for fun - T/Cass - pick a date and we will make it work on our end.

I hear some clearing of the throat going on! Will she be singing soon? This season goes on forever, and only lasted about 40 minutes this year.

Not much going on for Eyes this year. I do have the lead, with a 9.37, in the Steelheaders.
I was thinking we could do some big lake fishing before hand? If everyone is available, Horseshoe and I could accommodate everyone?

Hawk,
Don't be a hater for not getting invited to full the one and only open spot on our team this year. We had people begging and offering gift's to be on the Snood Dudes. We are not only the most talented and experienced team we are also the best looking bunch of stud's you will find here in southwestern Michigan:lol::lol::lol::lol:
