Can I use this unit to do this? I have yet to read the bok to see if I can do this. My dad wants me to do this in his hay fields.

If you plan on setting property lines with it NO, is is not that accurate. For that you need to have surveyed.

I want to find the size in acres of the field. Some units you walk around the piece of land and it tells the size of the land.

Yup, I have several Garmin units in stock and on display. The Lowrance units I would need to order, but that's no sweat.

I've read the book, or most of it, and I didn't see where you can do that with that unit. My old Garmin eTrex Legend, that I'm replacing can.
You can still get an approximation. Remember math? Just mark your corners and then check the distance between the waypoints. Once you have those measurements, you can come somewhat CLOSE on acreage. It will not be perfect in any manner, but if he just wants an approximation, this will get you close.
As was posted above, if you want to know exact, you need to have it surveyed. No other way.

Check this to help with measurements http://www.ask.com/web?q=Acre+Size+Measure&qsrc=6&o=0&l=dir

Good luck
