People from the site know me more in the waterfowl site but don't get me wrong I love turkey as much as eating them. I have been lucky the past 3 years with a great spot and lots of turkeys. How to add another to the collection and another deep fried turkey for Memorial day. Here's the turkeys I have got hope to make it 4 for 4. If you have Pics lets see I like to share and we can talk past hunting stories

OK, here are some of the ones I have gotten in the past. I have only shot one long beard, but I have missed 2 in the past. One with a bow last year, and one with a gun about 5 years ago.

The last 2 years birds have looked like this....http://www.michigan-sportsman.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=241&pictureid=6777
But I saw a field full of these this past winter......http://www.michigan-sportsman.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=241&pictureid=6778
So I am hopeful this year. Not to mention My buddies and I have access to about 5 different properties, and 4 of them are known for having turkeys in the spring, so bring it on!!!!

This fan is from one of my Oregon Rios. I put both beards and spur sets on the one plaque from the trip. I shot a jake late last year (May 25?).
I will hold out for a longbeard until the last week again this year. Hopefully I won't have to wait very long!
Good luck to everyone.

FMann, those are some nice looking birds you got. Looks like you need to hunt with a partner, or get a tripod, so you can get yourself in those pics and show off the fans as well.:)
Gunner, you ever have any of those birds measured for the CBM? Looks like a couple of them ought to be pretty close. I was just on the website, and found out if i had gotten that bird I bounced the arrow off last season, I might have been able to qualify, since the archery minimum is only 8". That is my goal this year, to get a nice bird with the bow. I'll hold out till the last weekend if possible, just like last year.

That should be cool. My buddy's Dad is going to film our archery hunts this season for us a couple times. He SUCKS (:tdo12:)with a bow when it comes to hunting, but deadly with his muzzleloader, so he is hanging up the bow this year, and picking up the camera. That is something that should be fun!

Last night I took out my box call, my prototype Zink glass slate call and even my number one diaphragm call an A-Way Black Magic IV to do some yelpin' and cuttin' in the garage.

Zink Calls has begun a turkey call line. They will be out this year. Fred and Clay Hudnall came over and filmed a couple hunts last year on some of our farms. They put together a video and will be releasing it soon too I believe. He wants to come back and do some hunts again this year. Our place worked out good as we had a place to stay right in our hunting area.
I have the distinction of being filmed missing a bird! Happens to the best of us. Filming can be a challenge, when the big longbeard was in the open, Clay didn't have him in focus. I was never given the shoot call until he had moved out. Not the first I've missed and probably not my last.

LoBrass,
Do you video other people hunting? I wouldn't mind someone trying to video my hunt for me. I have applyed for the first hunt and plan on hunting the first monday of the season. If your willing to video it I would try and help you with your bird. I will be hunting in Lapeer Co. the first day right off M-24 if this is something you think you could do let me know. I had a budy try and video a hunt for me a few years ago but it didn't work out. After setting up I noticed a turkey about 50 yards out in the tree, after he flew down he walked right in to me and I shot him with no calling and the person shooting the video never seen him untill after I shot him (it was the small bearded one I posted earlier.

FMann,
I don't shoot video, only turkeys:evil:. I'd probably do about as well as your buddy last year. The videographer was Clay Hudnall of Zink Calls. They came out once with Fred Zink and Joe Robison trying to fill Joe's tag and then once Clay came with Joe and I to try for my tag. Joe's on Fred's "Z-Unit" Pro-Staff. We both filled last year but neither was on camera.
Appreciate the offer though. Lapeer County is a little far for me. I've taken my Michigan birds in either Monroe County or Hillsdale County.

I just want to let you know there are no hard feelings here, and I hope the same with you!! Most of the team threads have some smack talking going on, it just goes along with the contest... nothing personal meant by any of it, just a way to create a bit of a rivalry between the teams.

Had to drive north on 23 today and saw a small group of turkeys in a field. 2 of the bigger birds were engaged in some seriously aggressive activity! Could only watch for about 10 seconds and in that time they charged and spurred each other just after posturing. Pretty cool.

That definitly sounds cool. I have seen hens do that before. last year I saw a hen strutting infront of 2 other hens, and then chase one around. It was crazy to watch! They were a couple hundred yards away, and I kept looking for a beard on the bird, but later that same bird came closer, and it was definitly a hen.

I have seen hens do that also. I was calling for a buddy of mine about 6 years ago. I see this bird comming throu the woods all fluffed up but not making a sound? Well I put this bird with in 10 foot of him and I'm getting mad as he is not shooting it:rant:. Well after the bird leaves I starting cussin him out and he says that bird had no beard and I had to believe him. Latter that day I pulled in a nice 20lb Tom with a 11" beard. http://www.michigan-sportsman.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=1175&pictureid=7018 This bird Came over a hundered yards in about 2 minutes, it would strut for 5 or 6 steps and then run for about 20 feet. It was shot at 35 yards or so and is the biggest turkey my buddy has ever gotten todate. I called him one that would have been close last year but he screwed up and needless to say didn't get that one.

I was out at my buddy's house in Shelby Township yesterday and there were about 8 turkeys down the street in his neighbor's yard. There were about 4 toms strutting and fighting over the 4 hens that were feeding. The toms were jumping up flapping their wings, and then one would try to strut and the others would jump on him. It was fun to watch! The season can't get here soon enough for me!!!!

Well went out today and set up my pop-up blind for my hunt in 2 weeks. The farmer where I hunt told me he has been seeing brids in this field every morning, so that is great. Come on May 4!!! :dizzy:
I also helped keep my hunting spot by helping pick rocks out of one his fields, man what a work out that was!!! An 80 acre field that seemed to be a regular rock garden! I gues they had not done it in several years, so it was about time.

I went out in the opening morning and got soaked. Didn't hear a thing then around 830am a hen started to go nuts in the woods so I called back she came out with all kinds of vocals hoping a Tom was with her but nothing. She stayed around for a got 30 mins and made noise the whole time (best caller and decoy I had ever had) and not one Tom came by. I packed it up for the day around 1030am and will be out all day Wed. It was killing me not to go back out but it just keep on pouring. Did see 4 turkeys 1 mile down the road and 1/2 mile past that 2 Toms were so there birds out there but the rain got me. I feel tight lip the birds. First year not hearing a gobble.

I got wet yesterday and my uncle missed a small jake.
I went out today and passed on 4 jakes in the decoys as I had 3 long beards on the other side of them. Never heard any gobbling this morning. I did get the birds gobbling but they wouldn't come in close enough for a shot. I will be back out friday, Good luck guys.

Nice Job fmann!!
Got out today for the first time with my buddy who's land I'll be hunting on. Set up at 4:30pm on the edge of a hay field, put out a couple hen decoys. Right before 5, caught a glimpse of a Tom on the other side of the field. Hit the slate call a couple times to get his attention. Took him about 5 seconds to cover the 300 yds to get to us, looked like the t-rex from jurassic park when it was chasing that jeep. He ended up about 20yds away on my buddy's side and he put him down. 9" beard 7/8" spurs. Gunna be back on em in the morning to get after a couple loonnnggg beards that have been workin the other side of the property. Hopefully i'll have some pics posted before noon. God I love turkey huntin.

Great job Frank, way to get us on the board!!!:) That looks like a sweet bird for jake. I would have taken him too with triple beards.
I am getting uneasier every day thinking about the start of my season. I have to work that Saturday, but thinking of switching with someone so I have the first 2 weekends for sure. No weekday hunting for me unfortunately.:(

Got all set up this morning a little before 6. Had birds gobblin right away. Half hour later, this bird stepped out on the other side of the feild with 3 hens. Lead hen was really vocal, so i just played copy cat with her, and she didn't like that. The 3 hens ran right over and started beatin up the 2 decoys, and the tom followed them. he was on the other side of some brush so I had to wait a couple minutes for him to strut into the clear. Not as big a bird as I was hoping for, but it was just to hard to pass up. 9" beard both spurs less than 3/4". So 30 points if i'm doing my math right. I'll have all my pictures on the successful page asap. Parents have dialup internet and it takes forever to upload.

Thanks. Things definitely worked out as planned. Took 6 hunts for me to get a look last year. Decoys were the difference in both hunts this year, birds all came runnin once they saw em. Bitter sweet to be done so soon, only got to hunt for about 4 hours total. Gunna try to find some more friends to call for to extend my hunting some. Dad is glad i'm done though, told him I couldn't go walleye fishin till I got a tom.

Good luck to you Gunner, I hope you can get your tag filled either today or this weekend. There is some guys on here with some "BIG" birds I seen 1 that scored 60 pts man that bird was huge. I'm wondering if I should have waited for a long beard now, but I will settle for my first mutli bearded bird even though he was a jake. Good luck to you guys that have latter hunts and keep the birds comming.

Got out to hunt with my buddy yesterday. It was a classic. Done by 6:50am. Gobbled on roost, called the hens to us and big daddy was in tow.
11 1/8" beard, 1 1/16" spurs and 24+lbs. A real dandy.
Once again, can't wait till 234!
Got it all on film with the Z-Unit of Zink Calls. Should make the next turkey vid. Can't show pictures due to the prototype decoy we used.
Way cool morning :coolgleam.

to hear about your tag sandwich Gunner!! I've had my share so don't feel too bad. We all have them now and then.
The spring season in my line of work has been challenging to say the least. My hunting time has suffered. I've been out twice. Today I only hit 3 farms and had action on 2 of 3. Two longbeards wouldn't leave the ladies. I purposely treated them with kid gloves. I should be able to get there next week a morning or 2. This farm is not hunted by anyone else and backing out seem prudent today.
I will post after my next hunt.

Pretty sure this isn't the bird that I was targeting. Saw him twice with no success on calling him close enough for me. Surprised at the length of beard on this bird. I was guessing between 9-10" prior to shot.
Beard 10 3/4", both spurs 3/4 45 pts.
Do I need to record points or picture anywhere else ?

Well took the wife out turkey hunting today. Did not make the morning hunt, so ended up out there at about 3:30. Spooked a bird out the field getting to the spot, but it was on the neighboring property anyway, so was not too worried, since it ran into the woods behind my spot!
Sat until about 7:00 when the wife finally got too cold, and said we needed to go.......:(. We did manage to see 3 different hens, but no toms or jakes today! Once hen came in fairly close, and my wife was excited to see a bird that close, so she knows what a hen looks like now!
Probably won't be out again until Memorial Day weekend. We'll see might be able to make an afternoon hunt again next Sunday though. I'm not giving up yet! Took my bird last year the very last weekend of the season, so there is still time.

I hunted Tuesday morning and this morning. Hunted different counties each day and hunted 2 farms each time.
Tuesday was great. Lots of gobbling and thought it was a done deal on a mature gobbler. I was reserved to the fact that I would not call again as I thought he was within 70 yards. He never showed himself and probably hooked up with the hen I had also called in. The 4 other gobblers that were talking with me that morning wouldn't leave the neighbors place. No worries, it was a ball talking the talk with the boys. That farm is my best chance still and I believe it's just a matter of time.
This morning I hunted with my buddy who shot a dandy on one of my farms in the early season. We hunted his best Monroe County farms and had a nice bird on the roost. We screwed it up by believing he had flown down and moved off. WRONG!!! We bumped him out of his tree at about 8:00am. My buddy has done this twice now with this bird. I believe he will not fly down at a hen unless he see's her. He sounds big (cow bell type gobble) and I think he may be VERY difficult to kill, if not impossible (but I will try again:evilsmile).
I think I will hunt Sunday morning with my 5 year old. I have a spot which should be visited late morning (dust bowls). I'm not a big blind fan but with my little guy, it's the only way to do it. Will report after that hunt.

That's about it. I make breakfast in the pit. You may want to bring your favorite morning beverage. You can bring one other person. Obviously, you'll both need to be license legal. I like BBB shot in a 3" shell, non-toxic of course.
Early season generally runs Sept. 1 to Sept. 15. 2 dates are taken and you can have the third choice. Opening day and Sept. 11th are booked. I regulate the pressure on our place to get about 7-8 good hunts in the early.
I look forward to getting out there and congrats on a spirited win!

Well I got out on Sunday again with the wife....she was not too happy since we went to bed at 1:00 after her highschool reunion, and then I made her get up at 4:00 am.....
Got to our spot and heard a gobble while still at the truck getting ready, so I was getting a bit irritated that we got there too late, but still excited to hear some gobbles.
Seetled in our spot and threw some calls, I heard some gobbles, but they were pretty far away. ended up seeing the same hen I saw last week (I know it was her, because she has a nest on a fence row by my blind) and that's all I saw the whole day.
I ended up moving our blind to another field with a better view and more sign for the afternoon. Ended up seeing 3 deer, one of which was a buck with some little velvet nubbins on his head, but no turkeys.
Got back to the truck and was talking to the farmer and his uncle and they has seen a couple big birds on the other side of the road that morning......:dizzy: Go figure!
Well I'll be heading out Sunday and Monday coming up, and this time taking bow and shotgun. If I don't see anything from the blind by mid morning, may switch to the gun and try some runnin' and gunnin' instead. Either way.......This weekend I plan on coming home with a bird! I'll try to do the team proud!!!!

Well managed to get out today and hunt again. Got to the spot, and was eaten alive by mosquitos......and no bug spray! What a morning it was, still itching from that!
About a quarter to 7, had 3 jakes come out into my field, and only one had a beard that I could see. Watched them for about 20 minutes before they got close enough to shoot at. Debated shooting or not, but since they had been the first birds with beards I have seen the entire season by my blind, I opted to take the one with the beard!
The bird was not very big, only 4" beard and 1/4" spurs, so I added us 20 points. After all cleaning, it was 8 pounds. It is soaking in brine and hopefully will get smoked tomorrow afternoon!!
Did see lots of birds out in other fields while drivign around afterwards, but did not have access to those anyway. So my season is done, and time to start catching some walleye!!!
