I had 2 doe's 4 fawns & 2 young six points in my back yard the other day. The bucks racks still looked good. I got a very good look at them with the binoc's.
They were all hanging together, with the fawns running around in circles every now & then. They all looked very healthy, & had a nice tan color instead of that dark grey color. Maybe spring is near.
I'm in Oakland county.

I have heard the big bucks drop their antlers early to save up for winter.

yeah, I was surprised on Wednesday to see a 6 pt still carrying its rack. got the blood up just like that:)! I've seen bucks carrying into this time of year, but not very often, so I take it as a treat. I saw an elk in the PRC one April that still had tall spike antlers - I wonder is that uncommon that late with elk? Anyone know?

Last year we we had 2 very nice mature bucks carrying headgear into April. Was surprised to say the least, considering we are way over population in our area.

I have heard some deer breeders say their penned deer shed their antlers about the same time every year, usually within a few days of when they dropped their antlers the previous year. I'm not sure how that translates to deer in the wild. Perhaps the stresses of living in the wild would have an impact on when the antlers fall off.

On the 14th I was near a local farmer's and a deer had been hit by a car and was still alive. It was a buck with no antlers. They had been off for a bit as there was about a 1/4-1/2" pad of velvet rounded on top.
