Anybody look at the Feb 2009 issue yet?
I was looking at the article on page 82 titled "My 2008 Michigan Hunter Survey" and found that I agreed with the writer 100% and even had a laugh that someone finally feels the exact same as me.
Then, on the next page, John Eberhart's article titled "Modern bow technology has made poundage bows very proficient". He states that he didn't get a single chance at a 100" deer in MI this past season......etc. and goes on to rave up other States....while lightly degrading MI's oppotunities.
Hey, even Eberhart can't get it done sometimes here in MI.
Anyways, just wanted to show that others do feel the same.
I personally, won't be deer hunting in MI this fall. It'll be the first time ever and I may feel a bit of remorse at first, but I think I'll get over it rather quickly. My plan is to bear hunt in the WUP and two out-of-State trips for deer. Other than that, my time in MI this fall will be spent trapping, fishing, maybe a little bird hunting, and calling for fox and coyote. I look forward to commiting my time solely on these areas. Hey, at least I'll save quite a bit of money by not traveling the country-side scouting for that big ol' buck that hasn't existed here for years.
Good Luck guys!

I couldn't get my hands on Woods and Water this month, sold out at Gander mountain and Borders. Note to self: order a subscription.
Can anyone give a synopsis of the article?

Yeah..I talked to him in Mid December while he was in Illinois. He had just put down a 150" buck with his bow. He told me he hadn't seen a single shooter all season long in Michigan. Michigan is tough...no doubt about it, but for me personally I love that challenge. I like that it's so difficult to find and shoot mature bucks here. It makes you better than the average hunter. I'm envious of my buddies that moved out to Iowa strictly for the hunting. They shoot 160"+ deer every year there and only harvest bucks 5 years and older. They don't even bother with Michigan anymore. I go out of state every year, but Michigan will always be my priority. I try to get my mature buck in Michigan..then it's time for out of state trips..then it's back to Michigan for the late season doe hunting.

You know it amazes me how much I learn in these threads. There are some, and personages with some fame, who can claim one thing one time and then, in another context claim a diametrically opposite manifestation.
It simply amazes me.

I felt that the point of the article was that there's no need for the inclusion of crossbows for people without the need for one during our (MI) archery season due to what he discovered he can do with a "modern" low poungage bow...

SteveJ: If you still want a February issue of Woods-N-Water try Holden's Party Store on Milford Rd. or even the Meijer store at Grand River and Wixom Rd. The magazine is in the sporting goods department. ;)
Borders currently will not and does not carry the magazine. Ya never know though. Maybe someday.
New one for March is coming out Friday the 20th. :D

So Tracker, when you go out of state to hunt do you lease or hunt State/Federal land or do you hunt with an outfitter that does all of the scouting and stand placement ?

Really? He paid a very nice compliment to my father in about the last paragraph of this article. This was about my dad and him using a crossbow!

I felt that Mr. Eberhart was rather open and honest in his writing. The challenge that he puts into his hunting is one that few of us would take on. He said that while crossbows were not his thing that he thought they had a place in Michigan (my words). Perhaps we ought to stop shooting at each other (not literallly) and save it for the antigunners and antihunters. W n W's is probably the most objective and inclusive outdoor magazine in Michigan. While I don't agree with every article or opinion, I would defend their right to express it as long as it is done in a civil manner. This magazine provides an important forum for those that do not wish to use the internet or choose to use both. There can never be enough support for our outdoor activities.

I don't believe you have ever heard me complain about the hunting here in Michigan and you don't even have a clue what I shoot.

I should have said full inclusion for people without the need and/or under a certain age.
I don't think that anyone would argue against a person with the need to use one. I can't put words in Mr. Eberhart's mouth, I'm just saying I thought his point of the article was that with the capabilities he discovered with his low poundage "modern" bow outways the need for crossbows in our MI archery season more than an article about an unsuccessful season as far as trying to kill a buck over 100" in MI...

Wolverine: Here in lies the root of the problem. Who are we to judge when or why a person decides the use of a crossbow. I have heard from many people who no longer bow hunt because they cannot draw a bow, yet do not qualify for the permit. These people are simply forced to sit it out. I have had some people in their 40's and 50 call me after the Detroit Freepress article asking who I spoke with at the DNR. They wanted help to again get a chance to bowhunt.
What was really sad were the elderly people who contacted me asking the same question. One guy was wheelchair bound and I have no idea why he could NOT get a permit. Another guy needed oxygen but yet his medical condition was not on the permit application either.
Mr Eberhart did make sense. He suggested trying a new Hi Tech light poundage bow before giving up bow hunting. For John this was fine and his choice. John is also up front on his support for elderly to use a crossbow.
