Lazy D knocked one down at 635am this morning. 7/8" spurs, 10 1/4 inch beard.

After that, we couldn't get anything to respond to anything. Alot of walking, and couldn't locate ANY birds.

After yesterday mornings hunt we decided to head home to dry out.

Dads hunt:

Decided to go back out around 1530 or so. On our way out we checked the first field, a cut corn field that is east of a big hay field. We say three birds feeding west to the hay field. Two hens and a gobbler hot on their tails. We tried to rush to the hay field that has standing corn west of it. Put the two hens out and sat in about three rows of corn.

Sat for about 30-45 mins without seeing the birds. We thought they may of feed into the corn that it at the top of the hay field and went to the other hay field that is west of the first row of standing corn. We walked the creek edge over and sat up and waited about 45 mins. After being tired of the rain and wind blowing in our faces be decided to go back to the house.

On the way back I said I wanted to check the first cut corn field where the birds had been earlier in the day. We walked up and there was a tom out about 300 yards away strutting around a hen. About 150 yards straight acrossed from them was two other toms fighting. They were going at it for quite a bit. Coolest thing I have ever seen. They were crossed necked with one of the toms bitting the others neck, running around in circles, flapping their wings.

They were all fired up, with bright red heads. Gave them a few clucks and purrs and they came running toward us. Mean while we are laying over in an opening on our bellies. The front one gets about 65 yards away the other hung up behind it about 15 to 20 yards. The closest one starts to give loud clucks, afraid it is going to run I tell my dad to go ahead and shoot it, since I cant get my gun over the barbed wire. He shoots and drops it like a ton of bricks.

The other ran off over the hill.

We get dads bird, take a few pictures and go home.

My hunt:

After getting back to the house getting dry cloths on and what not, we decided we would go back out for one last 1/2 mile walk.

We sat up in the field that we saw the other turkeys in up on a little hill in the cut corn, we put pretty girl and another feeding hen. We sat under a big oak with a bunch of little trees and scrub stuff. Looking out into the pasture just south of the cut corn there is a big rolling hill. I see what I think is two birds up on the top of the hill about 300 yards out. Just watched the area for about 20 mins. After deciding that it was turkeys I let out a couple yelps and clucks. The birds come charging down the hill, covering 200 yards in about 3 mins.

When the birds are about 100 yards out behind them comes another bird running trying to catch up. They run him off behind us into the standing corn west of where we are setting. About the time they run him off two hens come running down the hill. The two toms come running into pretty girl and another feeding hen.

The decoys were only about 25 yards out. I bring my gun up when they turn their heads away. The one on the left side (side I was sitting on) was just about to strut when I hammered him. The other bird gobbled and started attacking my bird that was flopping around on the ground.

After my bird gives no fight back he kind of walks off about 35 yards and just stands there. The hens just keep coming into the field and the other little tom gobbles and comes running into the cut field and runs back to where he came from.

The big tom comes back over to my dead bird and the hens and kind of gives a half strut and mills around. The hens are now in the field with the tom about 40 yards out scratching around and looking at the decoys.

After about 30 mins they finally feed out of the field and go back into the woods.

All in all it was a great day of hunting. Probably one of the best days ever.

Alright boys, as you know Friday morning Mike, dad and I went over to a local farm I got permission to hunt about a month back. Never went scouting, just thought of it as a back up. Saturday morning however the land owner brought a couple pictures to my work and there was about 6-8 different toms in a few different flocks.

Well we decided that we would try it out so we wouldnt loose it.

Friday about 0515 we get to the field and set up. After being there for about 25 mins we see a fox working our decoys. Pretty cool because I have never seen that before.

We wait until about 0600 or so and give three owl hoots, not a sound. This is when we hear Big Mike say " Man theres no turkeys here.":lol: Wait about 10-15 mins and let out a few soft tree yelps. Man did the woods LIGHT UP....

We hear what we think is about 6 turkeys gobble. Give a few more soft yelps and wait and see what happens.

About 10 mins or so later a hen starts yelping. This really gets the gobbling rolling. Its sounds like there are about 20 turkeys gobbling. (Little did we know) Give a few yelps back to the hen, she starts cutting hard. By this time they are on the ground. Getting closer and closer. She cuts and I yelped. Trying to pull her, so they will follow. About 10-15 mins after they are on the ground 1 tom hits the field south-east (Well maybe it was North-West :evil:) of where we were sitting. He goes back into the woods only to be replaced by 10-15 toms and jakes. My heart starts going 100 miles a minute.

Then a few hens come out behind them, now Im really getting exctied. Then behind them comes 15-20 more jakes and toms and a few hens. All in all I would say there were NO LESS than 10 mature gobblers and only 5 hens. The rest were jakes that kept coming closer and closer.

The birds stay out in the field about 200 yards away from us for about an hour giving us a good show. Toms would strut and gobble, one mounted a hen right in the middle of all the birds. A couple toms were fighting, one jake decided to try out what his daddy was doing to the ground.

Then it started to rain, just enough to get all the birds to run to the trees. Maybe 5-10 minutes of rain.

The big group of 35 birds split up into littler groups and ran circles around the farm all morning.

We sat until about 1030 and decided to move down the field a little.

At this point the birds were all off into the different wood lots around the fields.

We set one feeding hen and pretty girl out in a grass row. Give a couple yelps after about 10 mins of sitting. 2 minutes later two jakes come running out of the woods, right to the decoys. One of them pecked pretty girl and decided that she was not real and wanted nothing to do with her after that.

They move into the field and two more jakes and a hen meet up with them in the middle.

About 10 minutes later 5 big toms (that we had seen prior to moving down to the ditch) They come running out to the field to that hen and jakes. Mike and I give a few calls (Mike with the heart breaker, man did they love that call) and they start moving our way. About this time a hen starts cutting hard in the woods to the north of us. She comes out about 60 yards from the decoys, all the birds in the field come running to the hen, which happens to be coming into the decoys.

Within minutes all the turkeys are in front of us. One of the big boys is strutting in front of us at 57 yards. The hen stopped coming to the decoys when the other turkeys got to her. The group just stop and watches the decoys.

The hen decides that she wants nothing to do with the hens and starts to feed away. Afraid that the toms would follow, Mike decided to shoot.

Me and big goofy are headed out again this morning. I was out yesterday for 2 hours, could not locate a single damn bird. Hopefully my luck changes this morning.

This mornings update -

We were set up by 5:40am. Morning was perfect.

5:50 - still quiet, heard no gobbles yet.

6:00 - see above

6:15 - see above

6:30 - see above

6:45 - see above

7:00 - the walk begins. No birds, not an answer anywhere

7:30 - set decoys on corn field, and wait.

8:10 - "Hey biggun, you hungry yet?" Biggun says "yeah". I said "Let's get the **** outta here"

You gotta keep me entertained. Todays hunt was like throwing a spinner bait into big goofy's swimming pool and hoping to catch a bass.

I've been up north for a few days walleye fishing and just got back. I think widowmaker should hook up with the father -son duo and try to connect on one of those other dozen toms. The lazy D ranch might be hunted out because of the last couple years slaughter.
