I'm seeing birds EVERYWHERE, but we all know scouting don't mean jack schitt this time of year. The birds will break up, but historically I know where at least 2 dozen Toms will be. Finding the birds isn't my problem. Calling them isn't my problem. Getting a shot isn't my problem. Hitting them with an arrow is my problem:lol:

Russ, you still need a guide this year? I'd be more than happy to do it again!

Adam and I are heading out right now to set some yote traps at our prime spot....A couple less yotes means a couple mre birds!

I mentioned this to Jason last week, but I spotted two different groups of toms (18 different birds), all 8" +, within a quarter mile of my hunting property. Yah, they are going to spread out a little, but most of them will still be accessible by season. Also found a large group of toms when we were heading back from Lansing the other day...I may have to go knock on a couple doors and try to secure a little more land for season.

Better start shooting NOW Jason....we don't want to hear about any misses come season! :lol:

We always have turkeys somewhere!!! this last fall and winter i had seen more turkeys than i have ever seen... during deer season right behind my house where we had previously not had too many turkeys i saw a group of 60 and i had a fall tag and they just wouldnt come in close enough... i threw an arrow at a smokey grey hen and missed it... so hopefully she made it through the winter and can somehow make some smokey grey toms to chance in a couple years!!!

going to the lansing show got me fired up a little bit!!! i went to buy the same diaphram mouth call i bought last year and he was SOLD OUT!!! i was so pissed.. so i may have to get another one of those but i also bought one of jason's diaphrams so i will see if i cant get that to sound like a turkey...

i put in for the ZZ hunt so im guessing i will get that.... HOWEVER i may be in colorado in March but have no fear i still have to come back to michigan for another trip to get some stuff to take back out there so i think i may just have to plan it during my zz hunt :lol: im going to try to get 3 different species of turkeys this year... the eastern of course, merriam, and a rio grand... colorado has all 3.... ill make sure my MI turkey is the biggest....

the only thing i worry about this year is the beards being froze off... what do you guys think about that?
we dealt with it last year and this year seems to be a worse winter yet... so it will be interesting to see them here next month before i leave!

I have been watching our hunting videos from the last 2 years and it is getting me fired up... i have been looking for them for a while and am pumped i found them... if i could get them online i would... i have them on dvds right now.. just no way of getting them on youtube or anything yet... not good at that stuff!

Tried to get some footage of the two big toms under the guys bird feeder but they were just a little too far away for my dig. camera....didn't turn out real good. One was a big dude for sure and the other one wasn't too bad, probably 9" or so, but a really thick beard like the one I shot last year.

Where's the rest of the team??? You guys are pretty quiet!

That is at one of our florida residents property. Ack and I have a couple spots where the owner go to florida every winter and don't come back to michigan until april 1st. So I guess those are the drive by's. It is the only way we can keep track of the birds.

My fiance and Dad both got their first choices though.....Late season, Public and private land. Fiance says she wants to use her bow too. She better get some use out of that new Mathews I bought for her! We'll see!!!

My dad missed a monster I called in for him last year. LOL! Hopefully he can hit something this year, because he stopped hunting for some time and it'll be his first bird in over 10 years.

it was totally sudden... i got 3 different phone calls/ emails from colorado and 2 were good and 1 was.. well im not sure what one was.... 1 said congrats your application has been accepted we need you out here april 19th-21st for testing.... the 2nd phone call was my buddy at the department i thouht i was going to get hired into saying the academy isnt in april anymore its in august.. and the 3rd phone call was for a security company working at a hospital saying get out here now we have a job for you... so i would have a job while im looking for a real job... and at this company i would be making a lot more and would have benefits... right now i dont even have health insurance or anything... and im not even looking for a job in michigan right now because there is very VERY few law enforcement jobs in michigan....
so you can see how i am in a pickel... i was going to leave before the turkey contest then i said well i havent heard anything so i might as well just stay here and be in the turkey contest and now im at the point where i have heard from people and now i have no real reason to stay besides friends, family, and turkey hunting

Maybe we can do a virtual hunt for you we can set up a cam looking down the barrel of a shot gun and you can click a mouse botton to shot the Turkey that walks in front of the gun. That way nomatter where you are your go to go. Just email us so we can tag it and ship it to you. :D

so far i have a place to live out in colorado im waiting on a call back from a buddy to tell me if he thinks i can get a job asap or not... if he cant guarantee me a job asap ill wait...

Just got back....Got my ass handed to me! LOL!

A few world class callers were there, including Buddy Stang, the owner of Talkin' Stick calls. Man can that dude run a friction call! I picked his brain for 2 hours.. Super Guy. He was also very impressed with my calls (probably just said that cause he felt bad for me:))

Anyways, I got whopped like I figured. I'm definately no competition caller...Thankfully the real turkeys give me high marks :D.

took a walk back in the woods... saw 1 turkey track.... its kind of our fall back on woods anyway... not are number 1 but this winter there were 60 some birds.. now zero :lol: they will be back.. they always come back about turkey season... my dad got his there last year...
havent made it over to my grandmas yet but i have some half days coming up this week so ill make it over there

finally went looking for turkeys at one of my spots and i found them but they were jumpy as heck!!! of course i parked a huge red truck on the hill and was walking in a green shirt (of course) for st pattys and blue jeans...

there were between 8 and 10 and couldnt see if any were BIG gobblers... it isnt our BEST turkey spot but we usually take 1 or 2 turkeys off of here every year... cant wait to take my camera to my aunts! get a lot more pics there of some monsters!

Funny story though... We were yelling at a jake like that while out hunting once. After about 15 minutes of screwing with him, a thunderous gobble erupted 30 yards to our left in the thick. 2 minutes later (after some real calling of course) the trophy tom was flopping:D

As for the smokey, between flockshot, HunterHawk, and myself on Sunday, we saw 6 (thats right, 6!) different smokey greys!

sorry for having to drop out of the contest guys but i just decided that i am leaving in april for good... i was just going to miss the 1st few days but i decided since the only place im looking for jobs is colorado i might as well move out there.. and my buddy said he could get me a job at a hospital doing security while im trying to get a law enforcement job and i would be starting out making more than i make now and i would get benefits!! which i have no health insurance or anything right now... and i have a place to stay for free until i start making some money so its kind of a win win situation... the only thing that will suck will be leaving behind my fiance, my hunting grouns, and all my friends and family... it will be hard but hopefully i will be able to get through it by discovering new places and doing some hunting out there.

again i really apologize i love turkey hunting probably more than i do deer hunting.. if at all possible i will be chasing turkeys out in colorado too! just not sure it will be as easy as it is here!!! wouldnt mind shooting a merriam or a rio but i will settle for whatever i can get close to!!!

ill try to get those western turkeys all figured out then you can come out and chase them with the bows!! i think i have my dad talked into letting me use one of the double bull blinds... i like the old one better than the matrix and i think that is the one he is letting me take.. im going to sew some backpack straps on the carrying case and i should be good to go... bet that gets me in shape! heck i could even camp in that dang thing... although with that on my back not sure what gear i could carry out :lol:

just got off the phone with my dad and he said he saw 20 some turkeys this morning at my aunts....he kept saying " you sure you want to leave" you sure you want to go to colorado" he said half of them were full fan toms!! grrrr ill try and get over there and take some pics of what im missing... my brother and sister both have never shot a turkey!!! so hopefully at least one of them will fill a tag! and my dad get another tom with his recurve! i was going to try with my recurve this year and have been shooting really well... not sure i will use it out west though... have to take a bit longer shots maybe... we will see..

good luck to you guys and the new member.. and you dont really have that big a shoes! you just have to get a turkey with at least an 8in beard! shouldnt be too hard with all those birds!... then again... hunting is hunting...

I went out driving around this morning looking for birds and found a few. I got a couple pics. I will see if I can get those posted. I saw 2 big birds behind my mom and dad's house and 2 more down the road where I can hunt also. I saw more at other place close to where Ack and I can hunt and most of the mature birds were out strutting around. Didn't get to try the new team gobble call on them though.

Got a question for you guys. What brand and size shot do you prefer for your turkey loads? With my barrel I have to shoot lead, just don't want to go buy 5 different loads to try. Any insight would be great.

Winchester XX Supreme #5's 2 oz (14 bucks a box). Get a jellyhead choke (40 bucks) and you should be able to pattern out to 50 yards.


Flockshot and I found these loads outpreformed even the most expensive rounds out of our jellyheads. We also shoot 2 different guns. Same results.

I may pick up a few boxes this year. If I do within the next few days, I'll let you know. I have to head to Lapeer on Monday and could drop them off if you're in Metamora.

The barrel I have has a fixed choke and can't change it. I was thinking 5 or 6 shot. Its no big deal, I trust your judgement. I have always preferred Winchester ammo to most others anyway so I will give them a whirl. I'm gonna get out and shoot a little this weekend so i'll let you know what I think of them.

I have scouted and found Turkeys in the "backyard" and yes they do gobble at first light, but your more then welcome to stop by anytime and discuss the season over a brewski.

I did let the powers that be know about the change. It's cool.

If you have wood scraps, I can use anything 1" thick, and 4.5" wide. Anything over a foot long works for me.

I plan on heading up and doing some scouting this week. Probally Tuesday if it's not going to be too windy in the morning. I'll sneak up to the north field and hit the locator. I know those birds pretty well, and already have their primary feeding and dusting areas pinned down. I just want to get their roosting areas located (There is at least 5 different ones on the property).

I also have to hit my Davison spot, although that place has been the same year after year. Chances are good I'll hit there opening day, as the birds inhabit a soft swampy area, and that makes for less wear on their spurs. Less wear = longer hooks!

I know it might be too late for my 2cents on ammo, but myself and Ack use winchester high velocity #5's. I switch back and forth between bow and gun and still have the same ammo I bought close to 10 years ago when it first came out. My sons 20 gauge will shoot hevi 13 this year, but his also liked the hv #5's enough to get his first turkey last year at 40 yards. he got a lucky second shot after he missed at 18.

Scopes are a waste of cash. You should be able to shoot any turkey within 50 yards in the face without one. Just make sure you know how your gun patterns.

I will say anything over 40 is a long poke, and I don't recommend heaving lead that far unless it's absolutely necessary. Turkeys are tough!

I might try with a scope and without when I go shoot. My dad has an 870 Wingmaster slug gun I might borrow and just switch out barrels and see which I like better. I am not someone who's known for their great shooting ability. My dad and brothers call me "dead eye" and it isn't cause I always hit the bullseye :coolgleam. Don't let me scare you guys though...as long as there's more than 15 pellets in my shells I rarely miss anything:lol:. Just seems those damn deer don't always cooperate. I agree Ack, that leopard wood looks awesome.

I was hoping no one would ask that...no I haven't YET. I just dropped a $100 on my new stock and forearm so my hunting budget is already getting questioned by my wife :sad:. I would definately like one of those leopard wood ones if he makes anymore.

i get my run and gunnin out of my system when my girlfriends season starts..... she has limited time, so my already short turkey hunting patience goes flying out the window. lol. its alot of fun though hit spot after spot....finding a hot bird...moving in setting up, calling, hopefully shooting...if not,,pulling out quick, getting back on the move and find the next customer.

Jason, just checked out the entire site. Everything seems pretty good. About the only thing I can see thats missing, is some kill shot with birds coming in to your calls. The calls sound great too. I can't get my (cough) Lohman (cough) to purr like those. Please don't banish me for using the L word in this thread...:o All in all the site looks good though.

Here's a pic of one of the bucks I was chasing this year. Bad news is I didn't get him (obviously). Good news is this pic was taken post season!!!

Hopefully he'll avoid cars until I can put an arrow through his vitals this year!

I looked when I went by and thought I saw a truck sitting there. Nothing in the field except for deer when I passed by. That buck is a brute. Went and walked the woods at my spot this afternoon, but never saw any birds. Lots of sign though. Got a couple good ideas where to set up opening morning.

On another note, I watched a large flock of birds get pestered by someone just down the road from my house yesterday, which in turn pushed them into the section across the road from me. My inlaws just happen to live down the road a little in this section, so I may be able to go after them if they stick around....cross my fingers!

bought some new arrows and shot my bow the other day though.. was a good time... hadnt shot the pully bow in forever.. been shooting the recurve... getting ready for a pheasant hunt with our recurves on a pheasant ranch! tails a waggin acres... cant wait... its one last hunt with my dad and brother before i leave!!! we are going to video it too.. cant wait!... thats my turkey hunting for now

Wasn't April fools last week? This is just a cruel joke on mother natures part. As much as I love the winter, I am ready for spring.

I went and patterned my gun the other day. I feel sorry for anything that comes inside 15 yards. It put a hole almost as big as a baseball threw the target at 15. 25 yards I had between 75 and 85 pellets in the head and neck. At 35 yards I averaged between 25 and 35 pellets in the head and neck. I didn't get the Winchesters though. After going to 2 stores in Lapeer and not finding any except 3 1/2in I got some Remington Super Magnum's. They shot really well I thought and for 10.99 a box the price was right compared to I think $21 for the Heavy shot. I just put the new stock and forearm on my gun 2 days ago so I think I am going to go shoot a couple more times today.

hey tim, i was just browsing your post, and maybe i misread it...but have you tried patterning 3" shells? they are cheaper, and in my gun, which can shoot any, they pattern better than the 3 1/2"s...just a thought.

My gun can only shoot 3" or less. I was saying the only Winchester shells I could find were in 3 1/2". So I ended up getting Remingtons. I think Jason is gonna grab me a box while he's at Bass Pro and bring them when I get my new call.
