I heard on the radio this morning both men were locals and in their 50's. In the hospital in Frankfort and both critical. Prayers sent.

Thats horrible! A good eye opener for those die hards. I haven't been out in a couple weeks because of the weather. I look at it like this, the ice with this weather is like dropping an ice cube in a glass of water, when you drop it in eventually it cracks and gets weaker, although the cube maintains its basic shape it has gotten weaker and likely to break apart. Just because there is 6-12 inches of ice doesnt mean it is safe in all spots.
I am sorry for the families' lost and hope everyone makes safe trips for the rest of the season.
Just read in the Grand Rapids Press that both of them were pulled out 30 feet of water, after being in for 30 minutes. Driving snow machines on 3 inces of ice. Not to smart.

Ice fishing can be like siruns calling you to the hard water and then ending your life in a blinck of the eye :(

Yep its a shame......... Heck I just got back from town (Fremont) and the Newaygo county cops were parked at the north launch and were out on the ice just a short ways drilling holes in the ice...........I didn't see any big holes anywhere but there's some open water to the west of the north launch and all the permanent shanties are sitting on shore now at the launch..........thought I was going out today...........don't think so now.........I'll wait a week.
Just now heard about some type of festival on Crystal this weekend......hope they have the unsafe areas roped off..........

Allways cary your ice pics. When I fell in the lake I would have been screwed.

i lost a friend through the ice many moons ago ! just a constant reminder of what we love can be our own undoing !
im used to walking and spudding but riding a machine and having another person on in deteriating ice conditions is tough especially covering ground quickly !
last sunday i was faced with that decision and since ice went from 12 to 8 inches in a day and a half i didnt know how much more over spring areas that snowmobilers have gone through before and no one else riding - i opted to stay near !- better safe than sorry everyone

Confirmed, both passed at 11:00 am. My inlaws live in Frankfort, and now the victims. Very sad:mad:

great advice that I hope everyone who goes onto ice will follow. for about the last 15 years I won't go on any ice no matter how thick without my "pics of life" in my pocket or run thru my jacket if it's early ice.
