I just heard on the news that anyone venturing onto the ice tomorrow will be arrested...Not sure if its just for Erie...or St. Clair...orrrr????
High winds and warm temps are not a good combination nor with they make for a good day on the ice...
Better safe than sorry...your families want you around for a long time!
You guys better stay home its just not worth it.

Not true..........
There is no way anyone can arrest you for going ice fishing, and they can't fine you for the rescue either - not possible.
Just use common sense - warm temps + offshore wind = ice fisherman in trouble!!!!

You are going to be arrested if you try to enter Erie at Crane Creek. Stop by there friday night after leaving Catawaba State park. Heard they where killing the eyes out of Crane creek but they had a crack that had open up to about 2 ft. Talk to several people coming of the ice to check on the crack that was opening up. Some said they where still going out sat. I told them southeast winds 20 mph with open water to the northwest. ( shipping channel being kept open ) They where probability the ones who needed rescued. Unfortunately one died.

I wish I was going tomorrow, I'd like to be first in line to be arrested.
Basic common sense is required under any conditions, but arrested, that's silly.
With the winds offshore as hard as they were, I'd find the place where it was onshore or fish a canal somewhere. If it can move, it will. Happened to me 26 years ago, taught the lesson deep.

If they have cops or CO's at the launch, and they tell you to stay off the ice you better listen. They CAN arrest you for disobeying a law enforcement officer. It's their job to protect the public, smart or dumb. Would you rather have them arrest people for disobeying, or close public access because fishermen can't be responsible?

Going out on one of the big lakes I can see, but I was planning on hitting up a small pond by my house. For some reason I don't see myself drifting away on that baby:dizzy::lol:. I can guarantee you that over a foot of ice didn't just disappear. Yeah, it's gonna be slushy, but even if it's softening there's no way it's that weak already. I actually went on Erie on Friday and the ice was fine, but I looked at the weather for Saturday and I said. NO WAY was I going back out there today. Guess my instincts were right. Sure enough there was a big rescue out there today. I wish more people had common sense. Also, I'm not pushing my luck next weekend though with all of this warm weather. Next weekend I'm either hunting bunnies or yotes:)

That local sheriff was widely quoted on national news programs (Fox news etc) that he'd arrest anyone going back out on that ice again today. And I believe he has that power.
A whole pile of money was spent and people risked their lives in getting those fishermen back on shore safely. Unfortunately, one guy died in spite of the effort.
Just how stupid are people anyhow??:dizzy:

It is not against the law for anyone to go out on bad ice.
Nor is using bad judgment against the law.
That being said, Everyone is to be held responsible for their own actions.
We all have the right to free speech, but I don't recommend sticking your head in a theater and yelling "Fire"!
Also you can be arrested for interfering with a rescuer while they are trying to do their duty. Quite a sever penalty also!!!
That law may be the "Catch 22".

i dont get why people dont pay attention to the winds on the big water,i live right down the beach from crane creek and watched the boys in action yesterday,no one i know locally was on the water....6 of us friday caught 60 plus eyes, the bite was unbelievable.that was why we stayed and caught and released all day friday,we knew what the weather was gonna do and wanted to enjoy the beautiful day...even if the ice holds through the warm spell the water is gonna turn to coffee, wont be back out anytime soon....

The Coast Guard and other agencies do not sit around sipping tea and eating crumpets when there is no one to rescue. They spend their time practicing the rescues so they are risking their lives just doing their job. No extra tax money was spent because they will spend it doing the practice drills.

I call B.S. on that. They scrambled Coast Guard choppers out of Traverse City and other places to respond to that emergency yesterday. They dont ordinarily fly from T.C. to Lake Erie to practice rescues. :dizzy: They practice in West Bay, and not that often either. Sheesh.

The state certainly has the authority to close Crane Creek and other access points under its jurisdiction in the name of public safety. They would also have the authority to ticket and arrest anybody violating the closure, including possible impound of vehicles and equipment.

Yeah, I agree it wasn't smart for the guys to be jumpin the crack on Erie with an offshore wind.
On the other hand, to have three idiotic FreePress staff writers, all women, (no offense to women sportspersons) who have never held a fishing rod in their hand report what a waste of taxpayer money it was, and that people shouldn't go on the ice to fish, really pissed me off!!!
Who the hell do they think they are?!
Just because they aren't involved in the sport doesn't mean that its wrong!
Yeah, those guys made a bad decison, but it wasn't illegal.
Yeah it cost taxpayers money, but guess what, fishermen pay taxes too!!
Taxpayer money was also spent to buy the equipment that rescued the fishermen, and pay the salaries of the rescuers. Not justifiying anything here, just stating fact.

As said many times before, putting plywood or planks over a crack is not usually not to bridge open water, but to decrease deterioration from machines going over it thousands of times. If people can't wrap their minds around this let me know and I'll try to explain it more clearly.

It's called wasting our resources and putting the rescuer's lives at risk! For the stupid ones who "have" to prove a point, you probably don't pay taxes anyways and drain the welfare system in our state---so yeah, it's free because I pay for it!
Like the Police....people call them for stupid things. When you REALLY need them (I/E robberies or life/death calls ), they're tied up on that one stupid call (I/E my neighborbor is raking leaves into the street) and can't respond when it's really needed.
There's plenty of other lakes you can fish on and still be safe besides Erie.

With the amount of money spent on ice fishing, us ice fishermen probably financed that rescue out of the taxes on money that we spent this year alone. Money changing hands creates federal tax dollars and I know us ice fisherman spend a ton.
And don't feel like your getting screwed as a taxpayer due to the perceived cost of the rescue. Alot of our tax dollars are getting spent on many things that don't directly benefit us or things that we aren't even aware of.
Don't get mad at your neighbor when their house burns down and they have to spend your tax money to get the fire department over there to help them. Another waste of "your" money?

Two USCG helicopters were sent from Traverse City station. Luckly there was no rescues required up here while they pulled all of those fishermen off the ice.
It's fortunate all but one survived. They may be a day when a huge tragedy occurs out on the ice and I fear the rescuers will ultimatly be blamed for not responding in time.

You're missing the whole point here. The resources are being diverted from those who would truly need the assistance. Luckily, no other major incident took place that day where it would require the assistance of outside jurisdictions.
Going to your 'neighbor fire' example......so your neighbor lights a bonfire on his wooden deck on a windy day. He does this knowing that there's a pretty good chance that the fire will get out of control and burns his house. The neighbor leaves the fire unattended and it burns his house down, along with neighboring houses. Now the fire dept. shows up and needs more help so they call in other trucks from nearby towns.
As the fire dept is working, Joe the plumber gets seriously hurt in a car crash. Who responds? The same people tending to your careless neighbor's bonfire, which should have never been lit to begin with.
It's just plain stupid to do certain things, and yes I DO BELIEVE stupidity is a waste of money!

Reminds me of hurricane Katrina, Most had plenty of time and the resources to get off the ice safely. Some chose to stay and be "rescued".
I was out there the day before and the day after the ice blew out (I won't go on any big water on a strong offshore wind) and the ice was 8-14" everywhere I popped holes. I hate to rehash this but, the "pallets" that the news reported that "seperated and fell in stranding fishermen" were pieces of plywood layed over the crack to lessen deterioration from machine traffic. Which is common place on high traffic bodies of water.

Yea, we keep hearing this but it was still a crack and the most likely place of separation if the winds were to move the ice. I mean really, how bad does someone need a fish? It can't be money since most of them could afford quads and snowmobiles as well as equipment and bait.

I'am not trying to defend anyone here....The fishermen made a mistake, and thank god there was enough people sent from where ever to help these fishermen out..What your saying is these guys didn't need to be resuced by this statement???Each of us going out even on ice that's good take a risk, wrong place wrong time..
No, read the rest of the post.......they can't deny you service. We can beat around the idea of where our $$$$ is going and blah blah blah. My point is simple: When we make a foolish mistake, it costs and puts others at risk.

I thought the main purpose of the coast guard was to protect our maritime borders. They are a branch of the military, aren't they?

They are a military unit held with in the department of Home Land Security. Upon the declaration of war or when the President directs, the Coast Guard operates under the authority of the Department of the Navy. The Coast Guard was part of the Department of Transportation in 1967, and on February 25, 2003 it became part of the Department of Homeland Security. Its core roles are to protect the public, the environment, and U.S. economic and security interests in any maritime region in which those interests may be at risk, including international waters and America's coasts, ports, and inland waterways. So if you are in doubt of their role of ice rescue you may be guilty of contempt prior to investigation. You also have to be at least six feet tall in the event of your ship sinking you can walk back to shore.:D

Thanks for that and guess I drown then, lol. Just seems kinda weird that they are responsible for rescuing a bunch of fishermen considering their other duties. But it is what it is.

Yea, we keep hearing this but it was still a crack and the most likely place of separation if the winds were to move the ice. I mean really, how bad does someone need a fish? It can't be money since most of them could afford quads and snowmobiles as well as equipment and bait.
Yeah, I agree it was a point of seperation, and I don't fish Crane Creek or any other large body of water on a strong offshore wind.
My post was more to point out the mis-information that is spread around by the media and fisherman.

I would have to say that he is giving his blessing to all the fisherman in their future ventures out on the lake. Looks like he is making the sign of the cross with his hand, and notice the words just above his head :lol:
Take care,

Better send anyone that wants to arrest fishermen to Iraq and Afghanistan and arrest our troops going out on patrol ,,,don't want them risking there life's,,,,
I guess I am guilty, served my time in Iraq. Come arrest me. These people (CG,CO,and any other officer of the law) risk their lives everyday. They know their risks. If they don't, maybe its time to get a new job.
