The day started out a 4am (i havent gotton up that early since deer season) when the alarm went off. Hopped in the truck to pick up my buddy Dan, and off to Canada to the Thames river at the mouth. all is well and were on the ice at 645. I drilled 2 holes and stepped to the right to drill 2 more (the ice was 3") when i stepped back away from 2nd set of holes... kaplunk!!!! my right leg went thru to the mid thigh , i popped right out of that and was like oh shi*. So i moved towards the middle alittle more and drilled 4 more , fished for a while and hooked into a 20" wally on a #5 jigging rap ...lost him at the hole , saw 5 caught out of 100 people. While the fishing was slow i decided to mark the thin ice with my spud , i got within 5' of where i went thru b4 and KERPLUNK!!!! again this time the opposite leg. I got right out and decided to put mr buddy next to me to keep warm till we left. Marked 28 wally but most had locked jaw. Flash forward 1 hour: We went to St. lukes bay to finish the day for perch, mind you we had to walk the tree line. Our journey lasted 35 minutes and we had traveled 1.6 miles ( the deal was i'll pull the jet sled there and you pull it back, i knew damn well i wouldnt want to pull this home) . We drilled 10 holes and put our last tip down in and i here a 4 wheeler from b hind me , its the mnr checking for licenses and alcohol. No problem . Started to catch perch right away, 2- 9"ers and a 13 1/2"er --how exciting to see the tip downs flip over and you have to run to them, and even better to have a double and a triple. We caught fish all day..90 in total with 25 keepers. 18 jumbos and 7 nice sized mediums. We ran out of 4 dozen minnows and decided to pack it up with anticipation of a nice 1.6 mile walk back home , this time w/o 40lbs of gear dragging bhind me. As we started going the 1st 1/3 the pace had slowed and i made him a deal , i'll get the next 1/3 and you get the last. We finally get all the way home and took a break, looked behind us at all the traffic coming back in and 1 of the nicest sunsets to boot. We talked to the border crossing guard and said we did the best so far , mitchells bay was a total bust...so i guess we made the right choice-eh Heading back monday morning for round 2
