This may be a stupid question but I've always wondered why no one uses worms for ice fishing. In the summer time you throw out a bobber with a leaf worm or night crawler and it will catch just about anything but in the winter you have to use spikes, wax worms, minnows, wigglers etc. Anyone ever try putting down a worm on a bare hook through the ice? Just curious...

You know you're right, I have never tried a worm in the winter either and always use them in the summer. Next time out I'll do it. No stupid questions on here... well maybe there has been a few.

I may be looking in the wrong places ,but with my experiences it seems to me that just as winter comes around the stores take them out of stock. One time last year I had some worms left from the summer and tried then and just hammered the perch and gills. So yeah they would work great.

Yup, some guys use them. If you do a search you'll find that Connor4501 uses them on the ice. There was thread last year I believe about the samee subject.

For that matter theres been threads about using them the last couple of years.
Its not a matter if they wont work or not its matter of finding this time of year.
I bet if you put a small piece of worm on a ficious jig a person would probaly nock the chit out of them

I have had some great days using 1" pieces of crawler on a teardrop on last ice, often times outfishing everyone around me. They seem to catch fish everytime I have used them thru the ice... Any kind of decent thaw creates runoff, and worms dropping into the water, making it a logical choice as a good bait to use. The jigging motion makes that worm flutter. It just so happens that I'm on vacation next week, and we have a thaw coming. Should be a good time to bring some worms as part of the arsenal

Who would want to mess with worms in the winter thier mesy and a pain to put on the hook. Minnows seem so much more convienent.

I would say worms would be much more convenient than hauling around a heavy bucket full of minows and water. But that's just me. Seeing as I always like to bring too much with me I would probably be taking both. :one_eye:

Learn to catch fish on BEADS and never mess with live bait again. You don't even have to unhook the fish if done properly.

You don't even have to unhook the fish if done properly.Thats what I use I don't even like to mess with minnows I was just stating an opinion. But yeah I've been using spoons for the last 3 years. The only thing I don't like about fishing spoons is using only one rod. But with that said it's more convinent only having to drill one hole and its easyer to move around. I pop a hole and if I don't catch a fish in 15 minutes I'm gone.

I`ll make an attempt then some of the expereinced bead fishermen can jump if the want.
Bead fishin is using a lure such as Kens spoon that has a red bead on it.No other baits used just the bead as an attractor.

With the bead spoon I drop it down to find the bottom then raise it about 8"-10". I hold it off the bottom then ever 30 seconds or so jig it with a flick of the wrist. After the spoon flutters back down the line will come to rest in the center of the hole.
I usualy rest the rod on my snow pants to hold it steady so I can see the bites. I aslo use 6# stren gold ice line so I can see the fish hitting better. I like the Spoons that cost $1 and usualy use white, firetiger, or glow with a red bead.

Look up "jensen eggs" since a lot of people break off the hard bead and replace it with a soft egg. Ken's spoons or Jack's spoons are lures that usually come with a bead already attached.
You can take the jensen egg and pretty much add it to any lure really - it's great when the fish are really aggressive and you don't have time to rebait before the school moves on.
As for fishing them it kind of depends. On the spoon type lures I like to jig them in shallower water kind of up high to throw out a lot of flash and attract fish from a distance. Sometimes that doesn't work and I'll pound the bottom a little bit with them. It really all depends on if you can find the active schools.

Osmosis
OSMOSIS. When water diffuses the process is called osmosis. ... If enough water enters the cell by osmosis, the cell can swell enough to burst open and die
Heeeemm that doesnt sound like a good thing,I like Ozzmosis much better. The name of an Ozzy Osborne album

Tried a bit of a Crawler on a jig with Negative results.
A smaller worm may have worked better.
