Here are some ideas for you from one I made this year to hold my power auger and hand auger. Works out great and when it gets bumpy I just slap a couple bungee cords across it, hope this helps.

I looked all over the web for one to buy and couldn't find one under $50. Ended up getting one at Gander in Kentwood $24...I bought one of the 3 they had about a month ago. I'd bet they still have them...their quad accessories are few and far between and not always easy to find. The Kentwood store has them in a small spot on the west wall by the feeder accessories and dog kennels.
For $24 I don't think you can beat it even trying to make one on your own...

Don't have a pic but I made one out of some scrap wood laying around. it is a large box that houses the whole auger. I made it as small as possible to keep the weight down. It also houses some tip ups extra coleman fuel and a small glass bottle of auger gas. i like the motor enclosed because in the past I've run into trouble whith the carb linkage freezing up from freezing rain/snow. But my quad lives in the back of my truck from about Dec 15 til last safe quad ice. The auger end of the box is smaller and at the motor end the box is bigger. Imagine laying your auger on the floor and drawing and outline around it then kind of square up the lines that is the shape of this.

I had one similer to this, except it had a ratchet type clamp instead of the snubbers, but same bases.
I was coming in one night and hit a 6" crack and broke the base on the one closest to the engine. I seen the crack too and took it easy, but it still broke. I made a box made out of 1x6 pine the lenght of my rack, notched wood on both ends (radius) and strap it down with bungees.
OBTW I did use the U bolts from the brackets to attach the box to the rack. NOt a real good pic below but it's on the front.

I looked around at all the plastic coated hooks you can buy to hang things up on your wall of your garage. I found a couple that would fit around the shank of my power auger and then figured out how to mount them on a 2x4. One sits higher than the other on the 2x4 so the power head handelbars rest on the 2x4. I used a couple slices of 4x4 to get the correct height and spacing for my auger. I mounted on the front of my ATV with a couple of straps.

Just put one together today. I used big J hooks like for your garage. I have a rack on polaris, I just bent the top part of the J hook so it hooks onto the back rack and then u bolts from there. I then have one strap to keep it held down, I think its going to work good. Cost was 8 dollars and does not take away from my other storage areas. I will try to get some pictures of it.

I use the Kolpin ratchet gear grips for my hand auger.....works excellent but I'm not sure I'd try a power auger in them for any long distance driving on the ice...
