View Full Version : Why I use and like my vex

Herd a lot of opinions about diffrent sonars and such here is my view on Vexilar.
1. On and working with two actions plug in batter terminal flip on and she is functional just how I left it.
2. 4 yrs and it still works like the day I bought it. Tough sucker too I fish a lot.
3. No Frills/buttons just sonar action with minimal tinkering or wonering where in the heck your jig is.
4. Great service department.
5. Guess the biggest one of all is I am just used to that darn hum. Keeps me sane when I am all alone on the ice.......I here it in my sleep often.

I agree, something to be said for simplicity. I like dials and not key pads for cold weather use, they seem to be much more durable in the cold. I have 2 vexilars that are 13 years old and still work good, I would hate to even guess how many hours are on them. Small screens and dumb arms to hold the transducer don't get it, I want something thats easy to run and gun with and not need adjusting all the time that easily seen a just a glance.

And that's just about all that can be said for spinning wheels.
Simpler user interface is its ONLY advantage.
I'll stick w/ pushing buttons & seeing the whole picture. ;)

what cracks me up is the lowrance guys that think that their wonderful graph is so much different than vex's and the vex guys that think the graph is so much different than their dear vex's.
the only thing different is that for a real time view you look at the RHS of the graph (which in essense is a vertical flasher), but you have a history of everything to the left of it.
I've seen both in action (and I currently use a vex), and both get good target seperation, and both have ample power (Wattage alone isn't the end all be all as far as signal, but I will only extrapolate on that if you really want me to go into some technical mumbo jumbo).
both helps ya get fish. I *might* end up getting a x67c to give a whirl, more for the fact that I plan on getting a new boat this year and I could always put that one up on the front deck too.

what cracks me up is the lowrance guys that think that their wonderful graph is so much different than vex's.
The major difference between the two is the history. It allows the user to better determine the RATE of movements, be it a jig, bait, or target fish. Those who don't understand why it is advantageous to determine RATES of movement are fine w/ Vex's & don't NEED a graph b/c they could not utilize it's potential.
(Wattage alone isn't the end all be all as far as signal, but I will only extrapolate on that if you really want me to go into some technical mumbo jumbo)..
Actually, there are several instances where the graph's higher output power is advantageous, just ask the Marcum LX5 guys! ;)
When fishing in a crowd.
Or deep water
Fishing drop-offs.
I *might* end up getting a x67c more for the fact that I plan on getting a new boat this year and I could always put that one up on the front deck too.
Best arguement going, I say. Why have one sonar sitting useless for half the year at ANY given time?
Drop some coin on a sweet unit and use it 4 tines a week ALL year long.:coolgleam

I question the usefulness of the history by stating it doesn't take a genius to read a flasher and know how far your jig is moving in a timeframe, or a fish for that matter either... which would give you velocity (rate of movement). Can you please ellaborate on how this history has really helped you catch fish? Maybe there is something that I'm missing with that.
more wattage does not necessarily equate to better depth performance, and it sure doesn't mean better performance on dropoffs.
it does mean however that you have a bigger near field dead zone, and also on a dropoff you in effect have the same dead zone that a flasher does.
Amplitude is only one portion of a wave... i wrote a lot of other crap, but let me tell ya.... amplitude aint everything as far as signals.

Simple, velocity often indicates fish aggressiveness & mood. Furthermore, I have a mental picture of each bait I ever use working in the water, hard or soft water. I understand how it works and I don't just tie it on and HOPE it works...or do it how someone showed me, or rad in the directions, it has to be made to work correctly. Doesn't everyone get a new lure & drop it in the water to see how it works? I know, given the situation, just how I want it to be working. The graph's history then becomes an indispensible tool for knowing exactly HOW your lure is performing & how the fish are responding to it below. Feeling the lure's movement was enough...until I began watching them work on sonar & camera.
There would be no difference in the drop-off dead zones between the two units b/c the signal technology & physics are no different, esp sinse both units operate close to 200khz. My reference was to SEEING FISH on the sonar while FISHING A BREAK. My 502 does it better in the same locations this year than my fl8 did last year b/c it's more tuneable and that's the BIGGEST selling point for graphs on ince, IMO.:)
My graph also excels over the fl8 I SOLD in separating fish in weeds.

As far as history goes, what do you miss when you're looking away from the Vex? I bet you can't tell me can you. ;)
History is information, the more information you have, the better the decisions you make are going to be. Combine the history with the really tight zoom, you are able to detect movements that are not detectable on the Vex because the Vex has a lot lower resolution. When the fish have lock jaw, reading those very subtle movements is very important to your presentation.
It used to drive me crazy with my Vex when fish were only coming up a foot off the bottom and I couldn't zoom in any closer than 6'. That one foot section of water on the Vex is only a half inch wide on the screen, which makes it nearly impossible to tell what the fish is doing. That same one foot of water on the Lowrance is a little over six times larger, nearly the entire screen, which lets you separate the fish from the bottom and your lure. You can tell if its coming up slowly, going down slowly or having a stare down. You can't see the same thing on the Vex in a tiny little half inch portion of screen.

Hey - I thought the vex used to be on your avatar screen? Did you need the close up abilities of your new unit to see your grapeseeds and finally stand up for yourself & post your own pic instead of a vex screen? Now you're dissing it?
Take the average guy...ask him how deep he's fishing...most people have no clue. The vex allows the question to be answered, the other units allow it as well - your point is well taken. If precision is what you're looking for, you, unfortuantely make more time to fish than I do, and I envy that. But for every time that I get out now, at least I know what the activity is in the hole - and that makes the catching a whole lot beter than the fishing.

I haven't had the opportunity to use a Lowrance on ice, but have 2 on my charter boat. That is all I've used on my boats for 30 yrs with great reliability and performance, until the last unit. The fishfinder portion quit working just over a year after purchase. I'm now thinking Raymarine next time. I don't know how well the Lowrance will hold up to the rigours of ice but maybe I'll try it. I do know my vex has stood up to major abuse for over 11 yrs and still going strong. I'm on battery #2 and transducer #2 is acting up, but it gets beat hard. Just got back from the big NAIFC tournament on Devils with pro ice teams from 7 states and I didn't see anyone using anything but vex's or marcum's. The marcums are more powerful and have more features, but the vexilars are more reliable. The high power of the marcum is good for messing everyone else around you up.

All I said was "I'll stick w/ pushing buttonson my graph"!
YOU AND OTHERS HAD TO PIPE IN ABOUT MY COMMENT BEING OUT OF PLACE. YOU DON'T GET TO DECIDE WHAT SHOULD BE POSTED, OR WHAT POSTS MESH W/ THE TITLE GOOD ENOUGH. IT'S YOUR WHOLE 'US & THEM' LOGIC THATS CONTORTED.

Your not the only one there's 4-5 guys doing it all the time, I have already sent pm's to the mods before this.
You can't keep picking at people and expect nothing to happen:sad:

Don't worry tommy-n, I will admit it I made a comment on the "reconditioned vex" thread, I thought I would just give him my opinion and I didn't pay attention to the title of the thread. Just got to antsy to give me .02 cents. For that I appologize, because I know you made a comment towards me for writing it. Again, I totally see what you were saying about coming onto a vex thread and throwing in the x67c junk when it was a question about vex's. I will pay more attention towards the title from now on. Now lets all just get along.
