UGH, as I was tearing down my shanty last night, one of the bungie cords snapped as I just pulled the poles apart! I have only had this shanty for less than one full season, that's was irritates me the most. And the other side is about to shred!! Anyone else have this problem?? I see that you can order them on their website for $3, but I don't have time to wait for it. The problem is I don't live anywhere close to a store that would have something like this. Sure Jay's in Gaylord might, but that's still a 45 minute drive and was wondering if anyone has any quick solutions? I thought about buying some nice cord at the local hardware and in the spot where the poles connect where the bungie shredded, wrapping that with tape. The bungie really doesn't serve a purpose, other than keeping your poles together and a piece of cord would do the same. ?? Any help is appreciated!!!

I had a simular problem with my Frabil outback where the bungees that hold the folded up shanty together broke. I wrote them a polite and concerned letter and they sent me 3 replacment sets at no charge. Go to their web site and click on contact and either write them a letter or call them. They should do the right thing just like Frabil did.

Suggestion: Don't buy another Shappell, it happens all the time.

I just lived without the bungees. They're nice, but not necessary.

:yeahthat:

Totally usable untill you get it fixed. You will just have 2 pieces instead of one folded in half.

i heard someone had this problem and went to a craft store and bought some bungee cord or just go to the hardware and buy a bungee and cut it to fit

Alot of hardware stores carry "shock cord". The breakage is caused by moving the shanty around while it is folded with the hinged side down. Ya drag it acrossed the garage floor and it tears up the shock cord. It is alot easier to prevent it from happening once you are aware of what causes it.

Remove the nut and bolt at the bottom of the poles. Feed the new shock cord through the poles. Loop the new shock cord at the end and secure the loop with a couple of zip ties. Place the bolt throught the bracket and the cord loop and fasten. Now pull some of the shock cord out of the other side. Do the loop thing will under some tension. Cut off excess cord. Fasten the same as the other side.

I wont buy anything but a shappell. Made right here in michigan where we need jobs the most. I've had a dx3000 for 8 years and i beat the crap out of it and the shock cords are still held together. The carpet started to fray where i sit and i was on the phone with them trying to order it and they said "we'll just send you out a new piece" ...2 days later the ups man handed me a box with 2 pieces to redo the whole shanty. That is customer service my friend and a customer for life.

i have a dx 3000, and i also bought it because its made in michigan, i know i could have bought a viking for half the price, but the shapell was worth the extra cash. i would call them and use it the way it is until it gets here! but if you really have to have it then use shock cord, or cut down a small bungee. i cant remember how its hooked up but im asuming its a loop and pin set up, should'nt be that hard to fix...good luck

One of the cords on my Shappell recently broke. I am thinking of trying to do away with the cords altogether by just replacing the bottom poles with ones a bit larger so that the top section will slide down into them. Then I'll drill holes and insert some of those spring clips, so that the top section just extends out and retracts in like the poles on my Trap Pro. I'd also like to install some kind of locking system at the bottom so that the poles on each side stay up by themselves until the ridge poles are installed. I think this would make the Shappell easier to set up, especially in the wind, and have always wished that it came from the factory this way.

I Haven't gotten around to trying this yet, since I hardly use the Shappell now that I have the Trap, but thought maybe others might be interested in the idea.

I've ordered parts from Shappell a couple of times and they were at the house within 2 days of placing the order.

Any wearable item overtime is gonna have to be replaced, I guess i've just got lucky with cords that are extra "shocky".

I just bought a new Rover 2 last weekend at Franks, used it this week, and love it...

Only a couple of bucks each, no s&h!!

I was a bit surprised that Jay's in Gaylord didn't have them, especially when the gentleman I spoke to from the fishing department said "somebody else just called and asked that...I can give you the customer service number to Shappell"....but then again I shouldn't be surprised since last year they didn't even have extra poles in stock.

I have a S3000 that is propably 10 years old and still going strong. I love it and would buy another. My shock cord is still working fine too.
I did abuse my shanty on Saginaw bay last week and took out a lower pole. I orderd the formed roof pole cut 3/4 of an inch off and drilled a hole for the bolt and good to go.
I ordered the pole on Sunday night and it was at my door on Tuesday.
I am very happy with their product and service. I will by a Michigan product any day.

My 1990 Minuteman is still going strong. It has a few duct tape band-aids on it, but the wood still solid. And, the original shock cords are still intact :D

Many outfitters that carry tents will be able to replace the shock cord and re-thread it, usually for little cost. My 3000 has held up thus far but I have fixed tent poles in this manner before.
