Haven't been out, and a friend of mine said yesterday he picked up some minnows and he was told to keep your receipt, if the DNR checks you out and you don't have it its a $75 ticket?? Maybe this has been discussed here, haven't seen it

Yes, you need to keep a receipt now for your minnows provided the minnows you are using are on the VHS positive list. More can be found here: http://www.michigan.gov/documents/dnr/understandign_vhs_rules_238885_7.pdf

You can also search the forums using "receipt" in the search engine.

Keep in mind also that the receipt isn't just a regular cash register receipt and needs to have several pieces of information on it. An example receipt can be found here: http://www.michigan.gov/documents/dnr/fish-bait-receipt_203633_7.pdf

i have to ask almost every time

most places I ask they look at me funny, and then when I look at the receipt, it doesn't say weither or not the minnows are VHS positive, or have the vendor number or quantity. There's a list of DNR certified bait dealers on the dnr site. I'm sure if you search that, it will give you the list. I was surprized to see some places I bought from weren't certified. Needless to say, I won't be going back.

I have a small bait shop and for the first year I gave receipts and no one was asked by the DNR if they had a receipt. I gave up for a while since no one was getting asked for them. I have started giving them out again, with all the info required, but still no one is getting asked to see their minnow receipts.
I makes no since to play the game if only the bait shops and the fishermen are playing the game. Its just a waste of paper and time if the DNR isn't going to join in on their rules.
I heard of one guy on the Haymarsh getting asked and the receipt he had was only a sales slip and it was ok by them.

Tell them you trapped your own minnows. Solve's your problem. If the system is screwed up, fix the problem yourself.

I havent been personally asked, but know people that have. Why not keep yourself covered and get it. I always ask for one now.

Nah,,, to be honest I'm not really all that concerned with it. If I get asked and get a ticket for it..... then maybe.

It's always safe to have it on you. However, it was surprising to me one day last year where I was fishing in NW MI where a CO stopped me and we talked for a bit. All the while my minnow bucket was right by her feet. She even asked me what I was using and I told her so but she didn't check or asked me for a receipt. You'd think with the potential of spreading vhs, she'd check. It seemed strange to me. Maybe she had bigger fish to fry.

The CO's I encountered this weekend in SW MI didn't want to see my reciept. After they asked for our licences and what we were using for bait I asked if he wanted to see my reciept and he said no. I did find out that you are supposed to have your name written on the tip ups. We didn't get ticketed but he was shocked that non of us knew that was a rule.
