Lower unit oil question

I have a 1964 9.9 Merc, and I'm wondering if the lower unit oil is a standard type of oil that could be purchased for less than 8 bucks a quart.
I don't have a manual, but the stuff I just drained out looks like a standard 80 or 90 weight oil.
Any thoughts on this? I've always been curious about whether the marine oil is the same as other oil, just quadruple the price..........Joe

Got mine at Murray's. Marine lower end lube. Cost about $1.89-$2

I got my lube at Meijer. The brand was Valvoline and it says it exceeds the manufacturer's specifications for Johnson, Mercury, etc. Can't remember the price but it was cheap.
