You talking about a speed reel?

What is a speed wheel? I used to use a bicycle wheel and for hooks I used plain gold hooks. I tried tear drops one time and ended up with a big mess. I used to use them all the time in gull lake.

I guess I'm not sure what you mean by a speed reel? I'm just using a bicycle wheel and I'm getting the line caught on the other hooks that are still on the wheel when I'm letting out line. Would single hooks fix this problem? Right now I'm trying teardrops.

I don't know what a speed reel is myself. Do not use tear drops above the bottom hook and don't use a leader on any of the hooks. We use to loop the line and push it through the and run the loop over the hook to fasten them on the line. Did you cover the rim so your line does not catch on the ends of the spoke that are on the inside of the rim. If not run electral tape over them or the will catch and cut you line.

What is a speed wheel?

Pretty much the same thing, I had just always heard them called speed reels. The ones I had used weren't made from bicycle rims, but were made from round pieces of plywood, and aluminum rods or dowel rods around the edges to hold the line. Same idea, just wider to better control the line from coming off the reel. Then we had a small diameter spool attatched to one side with a chord wrapped on it in the opposite direction the fishing line was wrapped. Pulling the chord, spins the reel and reels in the fishing line. And with the difference in diamters, like different sized gears, by pulling 1 ft of the chord, you pulled in like 6-8 ft of fishing line (or whatever the ratio you designed). I liked that better than manually spinning a bicycle rim. I know alot of guys around here that use them, but I can't find a pic of what I am talking about at the moment.

Another version of what I was talking about.
