Unfortunately the love for ice fishing skipped a generation in my family. My father was never much of an outdoorsman, but his father was an avid ice fisherman. He passed away before I was born, so that tradition ended there.

Now that I have a son of my own, this is something I want to learn and share with him. I had been given advice to start small, Stony Creek lake or similar. With a 5 yr. old I need to find access with a short walk.

I'm not concerned about numbers or size. I just want to be able to put him on some fish and let him enjoy the catch. If any one has advice on a good "starter location" I would greatly appreciate it. The rest we'll learn as we go.

Thanks in advance....

I'll second the Boat basin at metro beach, short walk and usually good action.

When I was young, my dad used to take my brothers and I over to the canals in algonac opposite the lake off of M-29. I am not sure how the ice is there now, but we always had fun.

I've had my boys (twin 5 year olds) out at Metro and they loved it. Park at the Jet Ski ramp and it isn't a far walk to the ice. if they get bored, take the skates and go to the skating rink.

Ya'll have a shanty? If so, take them where the water is clear so they can see the fish... They love that .....

SANG, cotton, fairhaven and metro (up to 6 1/2 FOW) are clear.

5 eh? why'd ya wait so long

I started taking my daughter who is 6 out. Number one make sure they are warm. I have a good shanty which was expensive but it makes all the difference. Another thing that seems to keep her occupied is the camera. I put the camera on her jig and she has a blast watching the fish. Ice fishing to me is an equipment intensive hobby. If you don't have the right equipment it can be miserable. Just my two cents. I am sure others will argue that you don't need all of this stuff but I feel you do when taking a kid out.
