Deadstick with 1/8 oz fire chart./green eye jig and minnow tail hooked Pretty much covers it with the exception of the Mr.A Bomb homemade jigs. Those are really hard to find. This is my second winter searching for them without any luck.

I'm trying to learn how to fish a Deadstick rod. Can you help? How far from the bottom. How do you hold the rod, rod holder, bobber, ect.

I use a 1/8 oz jig. Type isnt all that important, but something that has a little weight to it, so that it "pins" the minnow in place. I use small lead heads, Adam Bombs. Most of the jigs i use have a #4 hook on them, but in some cases ill go with a smaller jig and smaller minnow. But, most times I use a decent sized minnow and lightly skin hook it about half way betwen the dorsal fin and the base of the tail. Be gentle when handling and hooking your bait as good lively bait is the key to this presentation. What this does is allow the minnow to swim off carrying the jig, but once the minnow tires the weight of the jig swings it back to center. So, imagine a walleye coming up to it, the bait fleeing, then the weight of the jig pulls it back towards the fish. Gives a nice start and stop presentation that can trigger a strike. Use a rod with a light tip on it, so that when a fish grabs it has light resistance and you can see the bite. Then gently pick the rod up and do a bit of a "sweep set" which will allow the rod to load up and transfer the energy to the small hook and put it home. Usually ill set it about 18" off bottom. To hold the rod ive used a mulitude of methods. Anything from an actual rod holder, wedging the handle in the rack on my quad setting on top of a bucket...etc...You just want to be able to see the rod tip good.
Hope this helps ya...good luck.:)

I just sent him PM about word for word:lol: I set mine tite to the bottom within 2-4" If I see a fish come in high on my zercom and he won't hit my other offering I will lift the deadstick to the the fish. And dont' be afraid to GENTLY jig the dead stick a2-3" lift drop can trigger a bite. Once hooked with the fine wire dia. of a small jig coupled with a SHARP hook, very seldom is a fish lost.
Fish on!

The old Indian Rig works good on a dead stick also. Tied up just like a perch rig excecpt we us #12 trebles. Couple of minnows trying to run for their lives draws alot of attention. Helps draw them into what ever you are jigging too.

were do you get dead sticks, can't find one around here......mike First thing you have to find is a tree that won't grow leaves. Sorry....any rod will work. The name comes from the fact that it just sits there with bait hanging on...no jigging just sitting dead with a live shiner on it.
