View Full Version : i gott rant a little....keeping perch.
i see a lot of pictures of catches here with perch that clearly are not fresh.
i love to eat these things, but if youre gonna be out all day and keeping perch, you CANT just throw them on the ice....as soon as they die, regardless of whether or not theyre frozen, they are starting to degrade (rot).
if the flesh is not tight, clear and firm when you fillet them, you dont have fresh fish.
you can see it in many pics where the perch are pale
if you care about eating the freshest possible perch....take an extra 5 gal bucket out there and fill it about 1/3rd of the way....since the water is so cold and the perch metabolism is so low, you can keep them alive for at least a day
i live 40 minutes from LSC....when i get home and throw them in the sink....ALL of them are alive.
makes all the difference in the world...at least to me

If you plan on keeping them and you do throw them on the ice . . . keep them! I hate seeing frozen fish after the guy has left.

I used to work afternooons and would clean my frozen catch from the week on the weekends, never noticed a difference between the frozen ones caught Monday compared to the ones caught Friday. If I had my choice I'd like fresh but not everyones schedule can accomadate that.
Couldn't agree with Bob more. Nobody likes catching dinks all day but if you leave them on the ice you remove any chance of that dink growing to be a jumbo.

Interesting point. I'm not sure if they start to degrade when frozen...I guess if you never freeze them they probably are "fresher", but I don't like to eat fish after I clean them so they all get frozen at one time or another.
The thing about the bucket is that it is extra weight to drag around. I know, a little extra work won't kill me, but now I'm trying to not dump the minnow bucket..not dump the fish bucket.....not dump the pole bucket....sorry, mine get the freeze.
I agree about keeping the throwbacks off the ice.
Koby, what do you do during the summer? Perch are difficult to keep alive in the heat.
Keep the rants up. I'm getting tired of reading about how no one is catching anything but dinks....although the trend seems to be changing.:smile-mad

I just chuck 'em in the bucket,, most of the time enough water ends up in there throughout the trip that the fish are still alive when I get home. The partially frozen fish seem tougher to filet as well. I know there's a handful of folks that just freeze 'em whole,, and clean when their ready,, or ready to eat. Anyone notice any difference with those fish???

They get tossed into the bucket or they hit the ice. If they get froze while I am still fishing, ohh well, when they hit the sink and some water they seem to be doin just fine and comin back around to get the knife. Walkin around with another pale full of water doesn't seem like a desireable thing to be trudging along with on the ice as well as worrying about something else freezing.
I agree with small fish tossed on the ice, put em back if you are not keeping them. They will not get any bigger laying on the ice dying.

besides throwing back the dink fish, maybe the "SLOBS" should pick-up their trash and cigarette butts. the dumb a@# that leave the butts on the ice really dont have a clue, they suck

i agree.
i smoke, and when im out there, all butts go into a bottle or can when i leave.
there are a lot of lazy idiots out there...how hard is it to take your trash with you???
but of course, those idiots are not on this site, and its a safe bet that they cant read anyway.
the best thing for us to do as a whole is force educate these pigs....anytime you see a slob leaving a mess, confront the a hole and set him straight.....might be handy to have a taser when you do that!!!!

There is a novel idea, go and get yourself into a situation where you are in a fistfight getting your butt kicked or shot.
I think a few pointed comments would be sufficient.

Call your local C.O., they will respond to these situations. On the weekends the re is usually a C.O. nearby the more popular fishing haunts. I called a few years ago on some slobs off of Gino's/Crocker. They responded and ticketed the individuals in question for littering.

I hate when people leave fish on the ice! IMO- Nothing can rot when its frozen. I just had walleye caught last spring the other night thats been in my freezer. Does that mean I just ate rotting fish?

Fish in the summer? I throw them in a cooler with a lot of ice and run my fish tank aerator until I get home from work the next day to clean them. Some will live, but they stay fine as long as they are kept cold. Same with minnows, get an aerator at Kmart for $7. Pays for itself with the price of bait these days the first time.
I just throw them on the ice, I never have any problem, to each his own I guess..I really don't see the point of the rant, maybe I just "don't get it" but if the person is taking the fish, eating the fish, why is it any body's business if they put them in a bucket or on the ice after they catch them? Perch are legal at any size, as are crappie and all panfish so as long as they take within their limit there is no problem. -Bryon

The only time I keep fish is when my parents ask for some (or if the fish is going to die). They freeze them whole. When they want some fish they thaw, scale, and gut - no filleting for them. I've never noticed a difference. I've noticed a difference between skin on vs off and bone in vs filet but never frozen vs fresh.

When you eat most of your fish from a market it was once upon its travel flash frozen to preserve it.sunlight kills fish mostly sunken eyes yatta yatta. But it is real hard to ruin or waste a fish in the winter when temps are consitantley not getting above 32 f.

I don't agree that the fish die and start to rot as soon as they hit the ice. I've had plenty of frozen fish thaw when I get home and start flopping around. Their metabolism gets so low they can survive for a while out of water. I've had a lot of fun with the old lady when this happens in fact!!! Its too bad I had to explain it to her eventually so now she doesn't freak out anymore.
i throw em on the ice most of the time because it does not bother me but im sure your right that they dont taste as fresh. if you clean live fish and pull a bag of frozen fillets out of the freezer and fry em up youll be amazed at the differance in taste ive done it before.

I put them in my bucket because if I don't I end up with some ding dong drilling a hole 3 ft away from me. By the time I get home 90% of them are still alive.
I always try to keep my fish alive till I skin them. Bigger fish I'll bleed them out first though.

I always throw them in a bucket and usually most are lively for hours in the sink if I have a beer before. I agree that as long as a person eats them to each is own but a 20 lb. extra bucket isn't worth alittle fresher taste to me.

So, basically what you're saying is that the meat in my freezer is rotting. I feel sorry for Ted Williams' family. To spend all that money on freezing their father's head only to have it rot.

When we do catch perch or walleye and happen to throw them on the ice they are keepers and are going home with are group. Many times you think they are frozen and put them in the sink with some fresh water they come back. Sometimes can cause you to have an extra brewski to make sure you are not seeing things;)

So your telling me that you could tell the difference if I was to fillet a fish on the ice or let it freeze, then clean it the next day after its thawed? You seriously think you could tell the difference...:16suspect
So then with this logic you would never throw a bunch of fillets in the freezer for a later date? hmmmmm
When a fish freezes on the ice it is not rotting, it is in suspended animation..Waiting for the knife!

this is a joke right? putting em on the ice "alive" to freeze makes em rot? well i guess i didn't learn a damn thing in 3 years of culinary school and 17 years of working in the food industry, because i was under the impression that cold inhibits bacteria growth, which in turn inhibits the cause of rot... but if you say other wise... then again my servsafe food management certificate means i dont know much about food and how it rots and spoils exct exct...

First of all don't leave dinks on the ice and throw them back later especially when its below freezing out. They may not make it or you may freeze their eyes and send back a blind perch only to die anyway. Why waste a fish? Also draggin more water weight around to keep my fish alive doesn't sound like fun to me.
As far as letting your fish freeze on this ice. If your gonna keep it, do what you want, but to think that my fish isn't fresh when I get home because it's frozen and dead is crazy talk. We use freezers and refrigerators to keep our foods fresh at home don't we?
Sometimes I have seen fish turn a white dull color in the summer time or in warmer weather. The fishermen I hang around with all use coolers and ice. Fish tastes fresh to me.

Leaving fish on the ice will not rot the fish but it may have an effect on the tenderness of the filet or eating firm flesh as opposed to slop but one thing to keep in mind is that you can drill a second hole alomost through the ice and punch a hole in the bottom to let water in and boomo you have a livewell. Helps if your gonna be out for hours more.

To go along with pretty much everyone else I can't stand seeing fish frozen on the ice after someone has left their hole. But i myself am guilty of leaving dinks on the ice while i am still at the hole. I was taught that if you throw them back while you are still catching fish the school could follow the fish swimming away from your hole. I never let the fish freeze and i never ever leave fish on the ice and walk away.

I have a simple answer..............I eat ALL that I catch!!!
Yes even the dinks if I feel the fish will not survive if released.
I have to disagree Koby!!
That is why we, that dont have live wells, put our fish on ice in the summer!

I have always just tossed the fish I wanted to keep on the snow or ice and put into a bucket in sitting on when I'm ready to go in. I pack them in snow and wait till they are firm b4 i clean them.
Also regarding trash.....I smoke but all the butts go into my pockets...wife can attest to that.

DE82 is correct.....if you are not going to keep the dinks....put them back immediately so they can survive and help sustain the future population.

you stated your side and i stated mine...nothing personal....just my opinion....not gonna keep the fish...put it back in the hole. do you throw fish in the floor of a boat in spring/summer because they are too small, then throw 'em back in the water when you are done at that spot?
