Well, things went ok on Simcoe, but I had hoped for better. The weather was real bad with 40 mph winds, near constant white outs, and a low pressure that made water pour up out of our holes. I went hoping to have one of those trips that turn out to be tremendous; it fell a little short. The first sign the trip would be tough was when we hit the tackle place down the street from Dusty’s. There was a group outside that fished all day Friday and half a day Saturday without catching much of anything. They were planning to stay through the weekend but got tired of the poor fishing and left. Inside the tackle shop I found 4 other fisherman asking about hiring a guide. They had been fishing out of a hut rented from the shop and had no luck. I was thinking that this was terrible. I finally get to Simcoe and it ends up being a real bad week due to weather.

We met up with Dusty after getting to his place. He’s a good guy and anyone would like him. He helped us get a quad started that didn’t want to fire up. Without his help and tools, we would have been 3 guy and 1 quad rather than 3 and 2.

We fished only a few hours on Saturday out at shoal marked with a red bouey. We didn’t do very good at the spot, but the fishing had really shut down about the time we arrived. Another group staying at Dusty’s had been there all day and had caught some fish. They said the fishing just quit about the time we showed up. They had a bucket full of fish, but most were 7.5-9”. I didn’t see many big ones and there was 6-8 of them fishing. It was good to see they had caught fish but it was not over impressive.

Sunday we hit it hard in bad conditions. We traveled far (out onto the main lake near Fox Island) and then back and forth all over trying to locate a school of feeding fish. We did get on some perch at about mid day at a spot where the Bay meet the main lake. We were catching them steady for a couple hours before we decided to leave the spot. We left because the fish were just not of the size we came to Simcoe for. They were still biting like crazy when we left the spot. We hit several other spots before dark came on only to find the good perch few and far between. We were working mostly 18-36 feet of water at most all spots. I ended up keeping 42 fish that day mostly in the 8.5-9.5" range.

On Monday (our last day) we decided to start at the spot we had caught fish on Sunday. At that point we figured we’d have more fun catching 9” fish than not catching much of anything. We hit the spot for a while but it wasn’t firing like the day before (probably a little early). We got tired of the few 9”ers and decide to go into deeper water to search for bigger fish. We moved straight out from where we were into 50 FOW. It wasn’t long after I got a line down that I was pulling one up. IT WAS FINALLY ON! We caught fish steady until 12:30pm when we had to leave. Most of the fish were 8-10” fish with an occasion pig (though not many pigs). It still wasn’t the dream, but it was fun! I took home 90 fish that were respectable fish (half were 9.5" or bigger.

Dusty’s place is real nice! I might would try another spot on the lake sometime, but if I could, I’d always stay with him.

The days of catching 50 fish over 10" are far and few in-between. Back in the late 80's when i started going up there, it was every third fish was over 9-10"..and those are my Favorite size. Males of course.....but they all travel together..... I was supposed to go up there this weekend, but was having troubles with my 4x4 on the Quad and finally got that worked out. My buddies are up there right now, I spoke to them at Noon, and they only had 15 or so each..... But they were fishing the Nursery (Cooks Bay) where there are ALOT of Dinks Always....They also love to sit in their Shanties and not move too much. The ticket to fishing Simcoe, and other Perch lakes for that matter, is to move around as much as needed, to find schools of Bigger, more aggressive fish. Sometimes its taxing, but on that 29th hole, you could sit there for hours pulling SLOBS one after another......;) Work hard, and you WILL be Rewarded......

Hi David
Great story couldn't have said it better myself, it was just one of those weekends when everthing went south no pun intended  but as mushy was saying the big fish are there but you have to punch allot of holes sometimes to find them and when weather plays into the equation it can make a good weekend go bad. I was out again this Thursday for a few hours and managed 2 whities and a couple herring, again I was pulling perch out of 80 fow, it is strange why they are so deep with no weeds on the bottom that hold their feed and hitting a 3 1/2 williams whitefish spoon. So i tried some areas in the normal spots that always produce perch 18-25 fow and I stayed for while and did not mark a fish, moved back into deeper water and the screen went nuts again go figure:confused::confused:.

I had a group in today they arrived around 11am and they went straight out to the islands on their sleds and came in around 5:30pm,they said they got a few fish, but the ones they got were big and they kept about 30 didn't get a chance to see them as I was off to work and I helped them with some minor repairs on their homemade sled the weather was nice today it was about 38f.They were heading to the same spot tommorow hopefully I will get out there as well and get some pics , but the cold weather is coming in for the next week with highs of 4-7f burrrr!!!!.

And David next time I will say there is no fish in Simcoe and maybe that will change the out come. Keep in touch and I will keep you updated on the terrible fishing on Simcoe:lol::lol:.

Regards
Dusty
