I really would like to buy a perch spear but I can't seem to find them anywhere. I went to Gander Mt. on Hall road yesterday and they only had pike spears and they weren't cheap ($55-$65). Does anyone know where I can pick up a perch spear and for how much. I'm really looking forward to giving this a try. Thanks for your help!

You are in luck. and this can go to any one else interested.
In my line of work i get gift occasionally. Last year I received a pike spear because I mentioned wanting one in conversation.
I can have them made and am confident they would be much cheaper than at the stores since there would be no resale increase.
I would expect they would prefer to make a few rather than just one. I will check. But if others are interested, please indicate so and I can coordinate getting and distributing them. I live in the New Baltimore area.

The best ideas are the one's previously posted by getting guys together to have someone skilled make a bunch. However, if you want one more immediately, the Gander Mountain in Southgate had at least two of them still on the shelf when I was in there on Sunday. They sell for $36.99 and seem to be pretty decent.

I would be interested in buying one for sure. Just want to make sure that these are perch spears and not Pike spears right? I'm looking for the barbless kind. Also, let me know how much they will be and I'll let you know for sure if I'm in. Thanks!

I will let you guys in on a little secret.....

I have fabricated my own, it works really good on the dinks too!!

I have filed the prongs on a standard dinner fork and fastened that to a broom handle as an extension 'cause sometimes you gotta go DEEP!! This works two fold and is dual purpose. I go right from the hole to the dinner plate with the same utensil!! :D

Great PERCH spear!!

I'm going out of town tonight and won't be back till Thursday. I won't be able to check the site so count me in on the perch spears as long as they don't cost too much.

Hi guys, I am a newbie but I would like to contribute to the discussion. I really got back into ice fishing this year. I wanted to try spearing without the expense. I was able to purchase a spear head from Bass Pro for $4.95. It has 6 prongs which are slightly barbed. It has a recepticle that will accept a broom handle sized pipe. I bought 1/2inch electrical conduit and cut a piece 4 ft for the handle. I used the two part epoxy that comes in a roll for stabilizing/centering the handle in the spear head. I had to sharpened the prongs with a file because they were painted and seemed dull. Drilled a hole in the pipe end and attached a swivel and rope. Presto, I made it for a total of about $8 and about 30 minutes work. I'll let you know how it work as I will try it at SFNG. Wanted to try it on the cheap before investing $36 for professional spear. If I works, I saved some money. Good Luck!!:)

very similar to what i did. i picked up a 5 prong frog spear head at Meijer's and bought a telescopic paint roller handle. the handle extends from 5 feet to 9 feet. i attatched the spear head to the handle with a small stainless nut and bolt. i filed the barbs down on the spear head and sharpened the tines. it has worked for me for several years.

when i am on the ice, i have an S-hook hanging off of my front horizontal support bar inside my shanty. on the end of the spear handle, i have a large O-ring about the size of a bracelet and hang the spear on the S-hook....directly above the hole. this allows for very little movement getting the spear lined up to the hole.

Any idea if those spear heads are still available at Bass Pro. If not what section did you find them in?? I'm often there so if you remember where you found it I can go look.

The spear heads were on a rack next to the power auger display( towards the Mall but facing I-75). Covers for ice fishing sleds were on the same rack. I was going to pick up another one on Tuesday and there were none left. Suggest you call first and ask someone to look----- They may also be able to order for you---takes about a week. Correction--- the spears are 5 prong part number 261842, SKU 33548 12968---It says Fish Spear Harpon a Poisson on the front of the card that the spear is vacuum sealed too.

Like the other gents idea of an extendable handle. I am going to try that next. Thanks!!!!! Well I am heading out to drown some minnows. Good luck.

OK. It looks like there are about 6 or 7 people interested in a perch spear. Good job noting perch spear without the barb. I'll make sure that is mentioned.
I will call to see how fast they can make them. I'll try to get them before next weekend.
Ordering materials in larger volume helps keep the price down. I would think they could make them for around $20 to $25. I'll give a report Monday.
