to protect from rust? What kind of oil? I'd like to think there is some sort of barrel oil that can be finely put in that wouldn't have to be cleaned out before shooting again.

Mine is Stainless so all I do is light gun oil on the oputside of the barrel. I no longer oil the inside of said barrel. I found it to take two or three shots to shoot the oil out and get it group tight.

When I had the Blued barrels I would light gun oil after season. Clean out oil before shooting and never oil after sighting in for deer season for teh inside. Outside was always kept light oiled.

I don't oil my muzzleloader barrels.
I use a light coating of Ox-Yoke Wonder Lube in my barrel after I clean the blackpowder residue out with hot water.
I run one dry patch through the barrel before reloading to clean out most of the Wonder Lube.

I tried that too with my blued barrels. I could get it too shoot out quicker but still took two shots????? Do you see this or is #1 shot the same as # 3. FWIW I clean swab after every shot. Never put it in my SS ones.

Skinner,
I haven't noticed a difference in point of impact from my first shot to the next. I'll admit that I'm not a consistent 10x shooter but I don't find significant change between shots. #1 and #3 are about the same from a rest.
I wet patch/dry patch between shots when shooting on the line. I can go 3 to 5 shoots w/o swabbing if needed on a woods walk.

I'm the same as Skinner. My stainless Encore gets a light...very light coat of oil on the outside and maybe a little wipe or two on the inside of the action away from the firing pin. Once the gun is cleaned, I don't have a rust problem inside the barrel so any oil is uneccesary. Now, if I were to store it long term...a couple years etc I might put a light coat inside the barrel.

I also take keep the breech plug out and lube it with gorilla grease and keep it in a ziplock bag attached to the gun. No stuck plugs, no lost plugs.

Oil is a lubricant. Gun grease inside and out on all metal prevents rust. Take care...

Eezox or Break-Free CLP.

Mil Spec gun oil on the outside and CLP in the barrel. No problems this way for me.

What is CLP? and do you have to clean it out before you fire your muzzleloader again?

Here's a link to CLP products.

No matter what you coat your barrel with you shown run a dry patch down the bore prior to loading.

CLP is a product that is made by Breakfree (among others). It stands for
Cleaner
Lubricant
Protectant. (Or something similar LOL)

Started as a Military product I believe. They also have LP which is Lube/Protectant and is alittle thicker viscosity. I use that on the bolt carrier group of my AR.

I always swab the barrel of my ML prior to loading it to shoot so I'm not sure if you "have" to remove it but I do. It is a liquid/oil so I would think that it could cause problems if there was alot.

I do not remove it from the barrell of my AR prior to shooting it.

Here's a link to another thread on the same subject. CLP seems to be favored.

I never use petroleum products on the inside of my ML barrels. Petroleum products cause more fouling problems. I have had very good success using Wonder Lube. I use it inside and out of my ML's, both on my stainless steel Remington 700 ML and my browned steel - wood stock TC Hawkin. Using Wonder Lube only, I have shot groups of 3 touching holes at 100 yds (From the bench with a rest, out of the 700). After cleaning I apply a very light application of WL to the bore. The next time I am ready to use it I just load and shoot, I've never had a mis-fire this way in 100's of rounds fired.

I use Wonder Lube the same way on all 3 of my traditional .50 Cal. ML's and actually have seen performance improvement while not having any "Hang Fires"!!

I have also noticed easier clean up using only Wonder Lube. I also get more shots between swabbing/cleanings. As a bonus it doesn't smell too bad.

I agree on not using a petroleum based oil/cleaner on a muzzle loader. Took me 15 years and 2 guns to figure that out. I use T/C No. 13 bore cleaner between shots, and bore butter on the inside and outside of the barrel when I store the gun. Has worked well for the last 3 years now.
