This morning I left my treestand(Loc On Lem missing the carpet), climbing sticks and buttback lying in the weeds next to the road while I walked down the road to get my truck. I was talking to a buddy for about 5 minutes, walked back and they were gone. So if anyone hears someone bragging about this miraculous find, please do me a favor: Take the butt of your gun and bash him in the face till every one of his teeth fall out. Or call me and I'll do it.

Idylmoments...

Man...there is nothing worse than a thief. Better yet, if i find him i will contact you and hold him down for you so you can have the satisfaction of the dirty work!

After all, what was he thinking? "Gee...somebody has discarded a perfectly good stand."

Dugfish,

You may very well be right, and it posed an interesting perspective that i am ashamed i never even considered.

However, no matter how much i would like you to be right let's be honest. If you had to put your paycheck on it? I'm saying it was snagged...maybe i have too little faith in mankind, eh?:(

Trout might right. I was wondering what I would do if I came across that laying next to the road with no one around. Having left lots of stuff next to my vehicles over the years, I might thing that it was forgotten. Might pick it up and try to post the find at a local store. Hope I am right, I still have faith and yes I have been ripped off in the past.

idylmoments you might want to post something in the local paper in the lost and found section, I think they do those pretty reasonable. Offer a reward even, you never know.

The thief knew that all that stuff wasn't "lost". He probably saw you lay it there & swooped in like the vulture that he is.

Here's another treestand story that will hopefully give you some vilification:

Opening weekend of gun season, Dansville State Game Area. Goodguy (GG) goes to his treestand for his afternoon hunt and finds A-Hole (AH) on the top step wacking the hell out of his Gorilla stand with a hand axe. GG asks AH what he's doing, & AH says "I'm pissed because this guy put a stand in my area."

GG tells him that it's his stand & AH owes him some $. AH gets down, rushes over & bumps chests with GG, also getting mouthy. Being the martial arts expert that he is, GG puts a boot to the side of AH's head. Before AH tries to get up, GG kicks his shotgun away from the tree it was leaning against. When AH finally does get up & continues his assault, GG punches him. Down he goes again.

About this time, GG's dad comes over. When they can't reach an agreement, GG's dad calls the law on his cell phone.

Result: AH has several charges pending, his gun was confiscated until he pays for the stand, and his right to buy a hunting license is suspended for a year.

These are the facts as related to me by my hunting partner who knows GG quite well.

The bastards don't always win. I hope you get your stuff back.

You walked back and talked to your buddy for 5 minutes. That means that the person that STOLE your stuff either went by you or went the other way. If they went by you, standing there in cammo and all, would have known thnt you are a hunter and would have stopped and asked if you had "forgotten something" down the road. If I came accors some "neglected hunting stuff" on the side of the road I would not even think about packing it up, its not mine! I would like to read that someone was looking out for you but I doubt that will happen.

It wasn't even on the side of the road. It was in the weeds on the 2track leading up to the road. Probably 20' back with my camo butt pack on top. There is no way they mistook it as falling out of a car or anything. We were parked up the road probably 1/2 mile, and the other people would have had to drive by either before or after picking it up. Probably road hunters to boot, driving real slow to try and shoot deer out of our woods.
My fault for being lazy and not just carrying it the rest of the way. Oh well, now I have an excuse to go buy one of those new Summit climbers.

On a happier note, I went back tonight and was forced to sit in a groundblind. Had 7 does within 50' and saw 6 others come out on the other side of a swamp. I'm sure at least one was a buck, it was sniffing a does rear, but it was too far and I forgot my binocs. I couldn't get out of the blind because the deer were surrounding me at dark and I didn't want to spook them. Very exciting for the middle of gun season.

Idylmoments, don't assume that it was an antlered buck sniffing that doe. A few years ago on the last evening of gun season I watched a doe and a button buck come in 15 yards from my stand. I'm sitting there thinking "Hey, Mother & little boy." Then the guy tried to mount her. Now I'm thinking "Oedipus?" She was having none of it.

Just something to consider before you sling lead that way and walk up on a bad surprise.
