I have just found that the litter were I will be getting my new lab from was born on Saturday. I know have until March or early April before I get him, but I want to start to do research on dog trainers for labs. I live near Ann Arbor and really don't want to travel to far to train him but if I have to I will. I would like your opinion on how long should I wait to start to train him and what trainer would you suggest and how much does a good trainer cost?
Thank You,
Socks

Congrats on the new pup! Pics are mandatory when you get it!:D
I suppose my first thought are do you plan on doing hunt tests or is this a meat dog? Or is it a highly trained meat dog? Are you going to do waterfowl or upland or both? Things to consider.
Back on point. I didn't get my lab until he was a year old, but my understanding is that your pup shoud be fairly solid on basic obedience and have lost all of their puppy teeth (which I think happens around 5 to 6 months of age I think). As for when to start I would think it starts when you bring them home, house breaking and go from there. What I hear a lot is let the pup be a pup and make it all fun, but start introducing rules(sit, no chewing, very limited fun retrieves), but don't be harsh in your discipline.
I use Dale at HRK, here's his website. His prices are listed on there somewhere http://huntersrosekennel.homestead.com/
You can do all your training yourself, but it's hard if your a first timer like me. I'd also recommend joining a local UKC Hunting Retrieving Club. Lots of knoweledgable(sp?) and nice people there. I joined the one that trains up in Howell (I'm in Ypsi township), there's also one in Jackson. PM me if you have any questions, not that I know a lot.:)
