I am having a simular problem with my Frabill outback where the posts freeze up when in use on cold days and happened once overnight sitting in the car. I was thinking of adding a clear silicon lube to the posts-I know this will keep them from freezing, but I also know this could cause a pretty decent mess if it gets on any thing else. Is there anything else I could use or would this pretty much be it?

When I 1st got my Direct TV, with the little dish, it kept collecting snow and loosing signal, the DTV guy said buy a can of PAM cooking spray, and give it a good coat, well the snow dont collect on it anymore, too slickery i guess, no good reason it wouldent work on a SHANTY??
Just a thought

I know what you mean with that Outback, I have one myself. I think any kind of spray lube would work, I am more than likely going to use WD40. I plan on lifting the posts up to the second locking eye, putting a paper bag between the posts and shanty material and spray a thin coat. The bag should keep the lube from going onto your shanty. I just bought my shanty like 3 weeks ago and haven't had in this cold but I had anticipated that would happen with those rods. Shouldn't be a problem after the spray.

There are several good "dry" silicone sprays on the market that work excellent for both zippers and poles. The optimum word being "dry spray".
I use some Spray On T.F.E. Dry Lube that I got from a friend and that stuff works excellent and is rated to -40 below.......
The can states "Made with DuPont Krytox Dry Film................. Excellent stuff that will not freeze or gum up.........

Can we get a photo of that can of T.F.E. Dry lube? Is it next to the wd40 in the store?

Well here's a picture of the can. Didn't come out quite like I wanted though. As I said before I got the 2 cans from a friend and have never tried to look for it in stores..........I don't know where he got it either. I have used a lot of lubricants over the past 50 years and this stuff tops them all by far, summer or winter.
This is the small writing on the can that didn't come out in the pic like I wanted...
*Made with DuPont Krytox dry film
Works from -40F to +572F
Safe on most plastics
Lowest coefficient of friction....
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have used it on shanty zippers, poles, house window frames, auger on snowblower, on the blade to my quad.........this stuff is the bomb AND I haven't found anything yet that it wasn't safe on.....I couldn't even begin to list all the things I have used it on. I have yet to see it gel in the winter even though I've tried. The can is the same size as regular cans of spray paint..

I dont know if you have noticed anything with your Outback yet, but I have had a few issues with mine but more importantly -the metal upper poles have signs of surface rust already- Any Idea on how I might address this issue?

Glad you said that, I haven't had mine out of the trunk of my car since I first used it about 3 weeks ago, hope mine isn't starting to rust :yikes:. If so I may buy some fine grade sandpaper and sand off the rust then spray on a couple layers of clear coat.

ACE hardwares sell the stuff Wally-eye is talking about. And like he said it IS slick stuff! It's in a red can. I had some last year.
