Last Monday morning I was looking out at the lake and noticed what I thought to be a coyote out on the ice on Hubbard Lake's West side. I took a few pictures then got on my sled to see how close I could get to get a better picture. The pictures are not the greatest but from what i saw and what I see when I go online to check it out this seems to more closely resemble a red wolf. This is based on size and coloration. Does anyone else have info on the existance of red wolves in Michigan. I know over years #1 they are endangered and #2 have bread with coyotes. I have never really used this forum before and am looking for a way to upload my photos.

Coyote...you might see light/dark color variations but you won't see red wolf up here. That's a southeastern wolf...

Looks like a very well fed coyote.

coyote...you'll see one like that every once in a while, what a nice pelt that one's got.

I have seen red wolves, saw one in Tennessee about 10 years ago. They aren't any bigger than coyotes, but they're built differently, longer legs, etc., and there's no doubt they're wolves...they've got that "wolfy" look on their face.

a couple years ago, my setters jumped a coyote in my woods. i was only about 30 yrds from him and got a good look at him as he stood still for awhile. he was quite a bit tallerr than the average coyote and red with black points like a fox. very unusual. i suspect he was mixed with a dog.

The one thing that made me consider Red Wolf was the color on the face. He had the white markings that I see when I looked up the red wolf. I did not get a good photo of the face but he had white from around the eyes down the snout to the nose.

as i remember a wolf travels with his tail straight out ,curved up.a yotes tail angles down, allmost looks like hes tucking it between legs, then curves out.this looks like a yote to me.

I'll tell ya what it is. Its a moving target!!! Definitely a yote, buddy of mine blasted one a few years ago, gorgeous animal. It was red almost like a red fox...made an equally gorgeous rug for his wall.

Looks like he likes to fish the same spot on Hubbard I do. :) Definately a coyote, probably prepping for the breeding season.

We had one around here a few years ago we named "Big Red". Every time we put the hounds down he would head to the next county. Very large prolly 45-50 pounds and looked almost like a fox. Still wonder what happened to him, hopefully he did some breeding.

Coyotes come in all different colors. Black to red and in between. The Algonquin or Eastern timber wolf is actually a Red wolf. How about this guy caught him last year?

I hunted with a guy a few years ago that got a black yote, to the naked eye at about 300 yards it looked like a black lab. When he finiley dropped it the tips of his hair was back and the rest just a little dacker then normal.

How often do you see the hybrids in the wild? I've seen some interesting dogs to around the house. See a couple of tracks that come up to our fence for our Brittany. It's a 6 ft fence so that's not a concern.

With the economic conditions I think we may see more them. From the stand point of strays become feral from people not having the heart to take them to the pound, but rather see them run free....

Sometimes, but a wolf will carry his tail in all directions most of the time.

color phases in coyotes are quite common...here's a blonde one (far right) i got last winter in Livingston County

We were running hounds one morning and I saw a big yote with my naked eye while out checking for tracks. I followed it into a small wood lot and kicked it up right in front of me. The entire back on the yote was red as a fox, and of course it was 30 yrds away and I have a 6-20 scope on my .250. Kid ended up shooting it in the next section, it was just under 40 lbs and def. red as a fox. I wish he wouldve full body mounted it, but opted not to.

I got three one morning a few years ago. One of them looked like your blond with a lot more red on his head and the top of his back. It really stands out when next to a couple normal color phased yotes.
