Just wondering how everyone hook's there minnow. in the mouth, in the dorsal fin, or even in the tail fin. The reason why I ask is I was out fishing this weekend, and I had a gentleman come up to me to see how I was doing. We started talking for a few, and I had a bite. I pulled a dink up through the ice. When I started to rebait my Hook, (I like to hook the minnow just below the dorsal fin). The gentleman proceeded to tell me that I was hooking my bait wrong, he told me to hook it in the tail fin. I told him this was my prefrence. HE THEN STARTED TO DOWN TALK ME!!
after a couple of minutes of his bitching I just packed up and moved to another area. so I am just wondering how everyone hooks there bait....

I usually hook em' through the lips or the below the dorsal I have not noticed any considerable hookup% difference in the two.

Some times I have found the fish will only hit the minnow if it is hooked a certain way-might be all in my head though. I like to go through the lips or the rear back fin area becuase I feel it gives the minnow the most action and tends to trigger the bite. The down fall to hooking the minnow through the lips is they are easily ripped off the hook. When the fish start rolling in and the bite is heavy I feel the minnow stays hooked a little better through the back.

I've hook it through the dorsal because I figure when it's dead on the hook it hopefully will look/hang normal?:dizzy:

I now may try other spots.

I like to hook em just in front of the dorsal fin. When they're down the hole, they seem to swim around normally. Plus, the jig is vertical, giving a better presentation. IMO

I hook them under the dorsal fin but on the underside of the minnow. Just to the back of the stomach. Is this what you ment by tail fin? There is a meety part right there. I have minnows last hours this way and tends to give them better action. they dont want to lay upside down and they tend to freak out a little more.

No the the man that was bitching at me told me to hook it right where the body ends and the tail fin beginsfrom the top..

Hook it however you want, if the guy had time to come see how you were doing his way must not have been working to well :)

For perch, I hook just under the dorsal fin laterally so the hook points slightly toward the tail. Sometimes I bait them through the eyes and sometimes I just bait them as fast as I can if the perch are schooling right beneath me.

I hook them threw the lip's. Bottom lip coming up threw the top lip. Just cause it seem's like perch hit at the head of the minnow and your hook is just waiting:evilsmile:D

I prefer to hook between the head and the dorsel fin.

:yeahthat: Especially if they are being picky on the bite. They get the head in their mouth and by the time they get to the hook it is almost always too late and I am on em!:D

I have found, and I am new to Pike, but... Pike like the dorsal fin method and perch perfer the mouth method.

Back when I was a bucket butt, Grandpa taught me to hook em just behind the head... Never asked why, just did it.

When I got a shanty, I learned why.... the perch will eat the minnow head first about 90% of the time.

Seems the minnow will stay alive alot longer too.

If fish want to chase, I hook them through the eyes because the minnow seems to stay livelier and ha an easier time swimming. I imagine hooking them through the lips would produce similar results.

If I want to keep the minnow from wandering too much, hooking them near the dorsal takes more of the life and mobility out of them.

in the back(upper green\dark part) right behind the head. Keeps it alive and swimming, which is the best way to bring the fish in.

Through the eyes for me, it's hard to find many of us that do though.

This poll is one of the reason why I read these threads. Good information and new ideas. I'm surprised how the numbers are coming out.
