View Full Version : Augers sharpened for $7

I found a place between 23 and 24 mile on Van Dyke (52211 Van Dyke) called Robinson Saw that sharpens auger blades for 3.50-4.50 per blade depending on the size. So for my 6" Mora it only cost $7. This sure beats buying a new set for $20 or sending them back to Strikemaster for $18. They'll have 'em ready for you the next day too.

I've been going there for the past 5 years. The last 2 years, I wasn't happy with them. They didn't do as good of job as they've done in the past. I used all 3 of my resharpened sets on my 10" strikemaster power auger last winter and didn't even drill 70 holes all together. I put on a set before hitting Burt Lake last winter, my buddy had a new jiffy 10", he was drilling 3 holes to my 1. Yeah granted, his were new blades. But what the heck.
I'm going to try a place in Dryden, that someone on this site told me about.

I wasn't terribly impressed when I had them sharpen my 8" lazer blades last year. The price was right but they didn't come back any where near being as sharp as new ones. I took three sets in to be sharpened. Still have two sets from them sitting around to be used at a later date. The set I did use stayed on the auger for about two weeks and then were replaced with a brand new set that I bought off of ebay, prior to the sharpening. It's not that they were wore out after two weeks, it was just that they were about as big of a pain to cut through the ice as they were before I took them in. I put the new ones on because I wanted it to be easy to cut through thick ice, not like the struggle it was with my worn out blades or the 'sharpened' blades.

Let us know what you think about your mora blades when you get them back and try them out.

i tried them once for my 10" Lazer blades....wouldnt cut at all

they can sharpen knives very well though

as far as im concerned NO ONE can sharpen these blades properly

just buy a fresh set and take care of them.

Will do, I'm dropping off a set in the morning on my way to the LSC meet n greet. Gal on the phone said they might be able to turn them over right then. I have an hour to kill before meeting Ficious so hopefully they can do them right away.

A new set can last a couple of seasons, after awhile, you start accumalating them, I'd be nice to find a source that does good work. Besides new blades for my !0" is $28 to $30. That's getting a little pricey.

I've since ordered the new ones from eskimo which will be here monday , thought it would be nice to have a sharp spare. I live in plymouth and gibralter...anything btwn here and there?---Mike

I had my blades sharpened at Robinson Saw last week and I got to try them out this weekend. I couldn't be happier with the results and I think they work better than they did when they were new!! Putting holes through the ice is once again effortless. You guys should really give this place a shot, its a lot cheaper then buying new blades and they did a great job on mine.

It's also important for us fisherman to support the small businesses in the area instead of spending all our money at the giant megastores that pay their employees $8 bucks an hour. It's a win win situation to take your blades to Robinson and get them sharpened. Not only do you get to save some money, but also the nice people at Robinson saw get to continue pursuing the American dream.

I found a sharpener for Hand augers at Gander Mountain for 7.99. I am disapointed because my Mora Blades, that came with the auger, worked really well, but its been about 35 holes drilled and its dull. I don't know if I bought a defective auger, but its bearly cutting anymore. Has anyone had this problem?

See post #8 on below mentioned/link thread ;)

You may have dulled the edges on the blades or tweaked the angle of the head...

There should be no normal reason for those blades to go dull and hard to cut with after only 35 holes. I drill about a hundred holes or so early on before the ice gets thick enough for the power auger. I change my blades every two years and actually they're still cutting pretty good before I change them, I just never let them get to dull before changing/sharpening them. ;)

Reel broke do you work at Robinson's? Just asking.

Reel broke, the mora's are flat blades, and Robinson's probably can probably put a sharp edge on those, my blades are strikemaster lazer blades and they're curved. When you can run your finger on the edge and not cut your finger, they're not sharp.
Besides, all my blades have come back with a nick near the cutting edge, where they were hit with the sharpener in the wrong spot. Shows me that they aren't too careful with there sharpening.
I'm not trying to bash Robinson's, but people should be told what kind of service they provide.

Taping a auger on the ground to remove ice will change the the way they cut. The blades can be sharp and the auger bent and they wo'nt cut trough butter. it doesnt take much to damage the auger

Well I finally got a chance to try out the set of blades I dropped off at Robinson last week. The blades that I dropped off didn't cut at all after I tried sharpening them myself last year. I put them on and they cut like they were brand spankin' new...way better than the set I've been using. It doesn't matter to me what you guys do with your blades, but if it were me I would definitely give them a try before you send your blades out for who knows how long and pay a lot more. Once again I use a Mora with plain ol' straight blades and they did a great job, but I can't vouch for their work on any serrated or other special blades.

Oh ya...for you guys that say your hand auger blades last for years...you should try a sharp set. They dull blades do work, but the amount of effort you have to put into it is way more. I'd assume most of you guys drill as many holes as me in a year and I can barely turn mine by the end of 1 season.

I stopped by at Cutting Edge in Dryden, the guy sharpens a lot of tools. But, he won't touch Strikemaster Lazer blades. He will sharpen flat auger blades like the Mora's for $5 a set.
Guess he ruined 2 sets of Lazers and paid the customer for new ones. So he won't touch them.
After just reviewing Strikemaster's exchange program. We're better off buying new ones .
Unless Sly comes back with some good news about John's on Jefferson.

I wish Strikemaster would actually sharpen your blades and return the same ones.
My seven inch laser blades were dull so I sent them in for sharpening. I didn't know that they just exchanged them for different sets.
The ones I sent in were older (made in Sweden) and the ones I got back were Mde in China. They were sharp... but not for very long. I can imagine that a cheaper grade of steel is used now that they are made in China.

Fortunately , I bought an extra original set with the auger, and when those get dull, I have to find a good sharpening service.

Bought a five inch laser last year (blades made in China of course, but I haven't got it wet yet!!!

Is there a way of knowing that your auger is damaged. I read in other posts that the blades or auger can be straightened out after taping the auger on the ice. Where the blades attach is at least 1/4 in thick, you would need a bfh to straighten them out. Any ideas. Thanks

That happens to be my cousin's saw sharpening service. If you are having a problem, take them back and he will take care of you. Ken's the only one who sharpens the blades, so there shouldn't be any difference from 5 years ago until now. Make sure that you have the correct blades on the right auger. If the angle is off a little bit, Ken is only matching the angle that you bring in. Unless you have the wrong blades on, they should cut perfect.

Yesterday, I ran my 10" power auger, with blades that were sharpened at Robinson's last year. My son drilled thru with a new 5" hand auger (that's drilled probably 50 holes, so far this year.) faster than I did with the power auger. We quit using the power auger and drilled with the hand auger after that.

You may be able to, but Nils has an awesome reputation for long life edges on thier blades. Just let the auger do the work. Dad's Nils has out lasted two sets on my Lazer and he's yet to sharpen. It still cuts like it was brand new.

As I recall reading on here the other day someone exchanged there thier blades from sweden to get back blades made in china.
