The bite at night during the summer........they bite at night during the winter...... They're predators.........biggest problem is "most" people never try after dark in the winter.........

i've done it alot and I mean alot, I have a sickness that prevents me from putting my rod down until I feel the slightest bump of my boat that has slowly drifted to shore after I nod off mid-cast. I'm not saying it can't happen, I'm just saying it won't happen.

Ask some of the guys on this site that troll Muskegon lake in the fall how many pike they catch after dark and most of the night while trolling for eyes...
We used to catch them in 5 to 10fow after dark in front of my dads house...just gotta be able to see the tipups......

(not too long ago.. early november maybe?) i was fishing holloway (below dam) and i caught more pike in the middle of the night with a jig than I did walleye..
it just seems like if you were using a tip-up you'd need some way to be able to see it (i was thinking of putting lights from some lighted bobbers i have on there, if i ever use a tip-up at night..

I've caught a few while Crappie fishing after dark. Sure adds a little bit of excitement bringing one into the shanty with 3lb line.:)

Always seemed to bite best at twilight then shut down after dark, at least for me.

Good Question PierBum,I often wonder the same thing, but I sure dont catch them after the sun goes down, first light and sunset is the best for me.Although I believe you can,as some guys have stated.I just dont think it will be as consistant.

Pike are sight feeders, if they can see it hear it so they can home in it, they'll it it. I think if it glows or rattles,or vibrates, you up your odds at night, other than that, their day time feeders when they can see better.

after dark is my time for specs but usually leave a tip up out for pike, not very successful with the pike, I may try to change my after dark tactics for pike to see what happens...good luck

take one of those little glow sticks that you use on bobbers at night, attach it to you leader at the top near the nylon line, stick a big ole stinky sucker minnow on a the treble hook............don't stray too far from your tip up!

Minnowman09 and I each caught a pike on 2 Separate occasions in Silver Lake in Grand Traverse County at night. Mine was 28 inches and was caught at 11:15 p.m. and his was 26 inches and was caught at 11 p.m. The smaller one was caught on a jig and leech and the larger one was caught on a wally diver. It was in the summertime and we were wading off of my beach.

I've had best results Midday for northerns. As stated, they're sight predators.

I used to have very good luck on tip-ups with pike after dark. For a while I had a job that did not allow me to ice fish during normal hours so I would take a lantern out my shanty and set tip ups. My favorite bait was golden shiners. My only advise would be is to make use you take a good lantern. A flashlight makes it real hard to de-hook them.

I think water clarity has something to do with how well they can feed at night. Also you can buy strike lights for tip ups that range widely in price and light up when something takes the bait.

have my tip-up out at night. will pick up a few over the season but nothing hot. I have a light from ht on mine that is red and green. some others on this site can tell ya nothing like seeing that flashing in the dark. On bass lake that tip-up is called the christmas tree and all wait to see it go off.

I caught a pike at night on a yellow and white tube skirt about an hour after sundown. Pike feed on smell also just like other fish. I had a fishing buddy who fished pike alot. He would make the minnow bleed. He said it made the pike come in. The guy caught alot of pike. Think about it, they are like a fresh water shark. They are even called water wolves.
I heard of a guy who used to fish Lake Fenton at night with tip ups. He would build a bond fire on the ice at about 2:00 AM and fish for Pike and Walleye.

just an FYI to anyone who might be trying to use a glow stick on their tip up or in the water..
I bought some of those 'night' bobbers with the glow stick to try last spring and they didn't work at all unless the temperature was over 65* or something like that..
The water was probably in the mid-50s and it didn't glow at all! Just make sure there isn't a minimum temperature for your glow doo-hicky.
I switched to the LED-style light up bobbers and ever since then haven't had a problem. I've even considered zip-tie-ing one of those LEDs to a tip-up, but haven't tried it yet.

Use reflective tape on the flag, if you hit it with a good flashlight you can see it from a distance.

I have caught most of my pike during the daylight hours. I think the best bite is mid morning through the afternoon hours. Once the sun starts to set the action seems to slow.

Also, I didn't think to mention this before but I have seen on more than one occasion a pike that was caught by anglers fishing for smelt with an underwater light well after it got dark out. The pike were all caught using Hali jigs with either wax worms or tiny minnows on 2lb test line and all were legal sized.

if you're like me and don't really care to frequently shine flashlights on your tip-up while you're trying to jig, these are also available for $13

This is kinda neat -- looks like the newer round frabill tip-ups have lights built into them.
