Hey, all. I got out this past wkend on Pontiac Lake and didn't have a whole lot of luck. We were out there from about 0730 - 1630. I'm new to the ice fishing gig and was hoping to get some advice. A buddy and I had a couple tip ups with large suckers and pulled up 3 pikes with the largest being 23" (Dang!). We jigged in his shanty while waiting for the tip ups. We used teardrops with waxworms and at one point I pulled probably 20 sunnies and gills in an hour's time, only the biggest was probably 3". Any idea what to use to get the bigger ones to attack? Thanks!

If you are sighting or are sure there are bigger gills down the hole, but cant get them to bite my words of advice would be to go with a super small tear drop and tip it with a spike instead of a waxie- name of the game is small bait. If you are not sighting larger gills then my advice is move on to another spot-thats just my two cents

I agree with the guys above....personally I would change from suckers to golden shiners, I've had much better luck on Ponitac with those.
Panfish usually run kind of small on out there if you don't know right where to look and even then it's a gamble.

Thanks for all the replies. It's good to hear from the locals that know a thing or two! :)
I think tomorrow on the way home from work I will pop a hole in Walled Lake and see if I can get any gills or crappie to latch onto my line. This weekend we'll probably head back out to Pontiac or maybe Oxbow.
Happy fishing! :fish:

Let us know how you do on Walled lake I have never had much luck out there, but today I drove by and saw about 6 permenant shantys on the lake-I also noticed someone had punched a pretty decent hole right off of the beach so be careful- The hole was marked but if you are heading out tonight(in the dark) use caution. Have you ever tried Union lake- if you want to meet the locals try hitting that it is wall to wall people at the launch on the weekends.

Thanks for looking out. I'll keep my eye out for that.

Was kind of bust the other day. Heading back out onto Pontiac this weekend...hopefully will be a bit more bountiful than last weekend.
