I am sure most of you remember the the pig hunt that we came together on and made 4 kids dreams come true and being there to see the kids all take their first animal was pretty cool!
If you dont remember or did not see it here is the thread from last year!
http://www.michigan-sportsman.com/forum/showthread.php?t=227329&highlight=woods+edge+ranch
Recently a thread brought to my attention by Death From Above, who came to the hunt last year just to see the kids with there trophies, about a boy that another member was in the hospital with and here is the thread if you have not already read it already!!
http://www.michigan-sportsman.com/fo...d.php?t=267096 (http://www.michigan-sportsman.com/forum/showthread.php?t=267096)
So our 1st 2 kids would be Curtis and Zilla's Son!
I have a 3rd kid that probably has less than a year to live... I received an email from his grandfather and this is a kid that we know through the Tony Semple Foundation and he is currently on Dialysis 3 times a week and has just learned that his Kidney is shutting down or has shut down and all the kid dreams about is going on one more hunt. I will post the email when I get to the office today but he would be very much deserving of this opportunity!
Last year we raised enough funds to send 4 kids so I am in hopes we can do at least that many and maybe one or two more this year so if it looks as though we can raise the funds to send 4th, 5th or 6th kid we will revert back to essays or if you know of a child that is deserving of the opportunity all options will be considered.
The hunt will take place at the same place this year.. We are looking at the first week of March so that should give us plenty enough time to get everything in line for the hunt and raise the funds. I will be video taping the hunt this year and putting on DVD for these kids and will also have a link posted on here when all is said and done.
So what do you guys say?

Dan, Thanks for heading this up again this year.
One thought I have is if there is a kid that is terminally ill let's get them out there as soon as they can physically. I would hate to have the donations and have a kid not be able to make it because the window of health has passed.

Butch,
Great to hear from you. Thanks for staying in touch and letting us know how Willie is doing. Sorry to hear about the kidney issues. I don’t know if you knew it or not, but I even went and got tested for Willie and found that I was not a candidate either. There is a wonderful gentleman that we work with, Chuck Connell. He runs an operation called Children’s Charters up around the Cadillac, Michigan area. Chuck is a wonderful man and we are proud to be partners with him and his organization. You can reach Chuck via the email address above, as I have copied him on this correspondence as well.
Unfortunately, the Tony Semple Foundation for Hope only grants one hunting adventure to each selected candidate through our program either as a sponsored candidate or in conjunction with another organization, such as Joseph’s Journey. Joseph’s Journey actually only co-sponsored Willie, the Tony Semple Foundation for Hope paid for the rest of the unsponsored portions of Willie’s Outdoor Adventure.
Please keep us posted as to how this works out for you and Willie. Also, give Willie a big hug for us and you guys have a great New Year. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me directly.

Subject: Hi
Craig. I don't know if you remember me but I am Willie Hansen's grandfather. I know that we had a great time with you and Tony and I was wondering something. Is there any possible way that he could get a hunt thru you guys or if you know of some other outfit that would do it.
That is all that he ever talks about.
He still has not gotten a new kidney. We all got checked and found out that we are not able to. He has dialisis 3 times a week and it is taking a bigger toll on him every time he goes.
I don't mean to bug you but I thought that you might know someone that could help him out.
Thanks Butch Hansen

I havnt read through the whole thread or anything but I am sure if you guys talked to an outfitter and explained what you were doing they might give you a much cheaper price. Just throwing that idea out there

This is the same place that did it last year and I did alot of research last year and for the size of the hogs that we took his pricing is very competitive with everyone else... Plus he know what to expect and has enough people to make sure things go smoothly..

Who do you want the checks made out to?
Is there any need for clothing?

01-06-2009, 10:25 PM
Whit,
you can make them out to Dan Connell I am setting all funds asside in a seperate account I have setup for things like this and if anyone needs I can hold checks and cash them when is good for you..
Every little bit helps so for anyone considering the donations to this point have been very generous and very much appreciated but everybit helps. Even if you can do $5-$10-$20, Etc... It will all help us get to our goal to get these kids hunting.

Why dont you help us work on funding the 25 kids we are going to be sponsoring this year. Would love to have you in camp this year! We need to let everyone know about the Tony Semple Foundation for Hope. Again great job as we sponsored willie last year for the whitetail hunt.
Keep up the great work as you have a huge heart. Love to have you working with us as we do the 6 camps in 5 states this year.

So I called last night to let mom know that we would be taking Willie on a pig hunt and I consider myself to be a pretty tough guy but to hear the excitement and happiness on the phone and then when she lost it as she was telling how hard things have been on him as of late you all can call me a wuss or whatever you would like but the tears started rolling.. I would have loved to have been there to see the look on his face when she told him but I have a pretty good idea already!
I know we are still a little ways out here and I know things are very tight this year so for those that have donated and intend to donate you really are making a difference! I received a PM I would love to post from the member that funded the one hunt and I will ask if I can post it but in the long and short its heart felt and I very much look forward to seeing this gentleman at the hunt this year and he doesnt know it yet but he will be sitting in the blind with us when the hunt goes down!
Lets try to keep this thing rolling!!! We are not far off the 2nd kid and if that is what we can do that is great but with everyone on here I am thinking we can do a whole lot better than that!! I dont want to be the only one posting on this thread so please spread the word to help these kids out!
Thank You Everyone!

Was just re reading the PM and I am going to pull the trigger here and post it.. I am just leaving out his name for now!! Here it is!
I'm paying for one of these kids hunts, so just put me down for one hunt.
If you think this will work I'm also willing to talk to my butcher who happens to have a soft heart for these causes, as he himself lost a leg due to a gunshot wound in the field. He currently raises and butchers russian boars, so he knows what he's doing. I'm hoping he'll donate the butchering fees if I help him do it. He's located down by Mount Pleasant, but i'll take care of getting the hogs to him. From there they'll have to make arrangements to pick them up. Or if close by i'll drop off the meat.
I'm also available that weekend and would like to be part of this hunt. I have a digital video camera, although not as nice as yours i'm sure! I'd be more than happy to tape one of the kids. Also have a very nice Digital SLR Camera that I plan on bringing.
I'm going to talk to my fellow hunter friends and see what else I can round up. I'm sure i'll be able to get enough funds together to maybe take care of a 2nd. I'll let you by the end of the week.
Thanks for heading this up.
Every now and then we get an opportunity to do what is right. It's moments like these that makes the soul feel alive. This will truly be a humbling experience. TO be part of a childs life who is terminal will probably make me cry at some point.
I struggled for years trying to rationalize why I worked so hard making so much money for corporate america. Working like a dog, for little rewards. Getting nothing out of it, making no ones life better! It really bothered me.
My fear always was that i'd die someday and never would have made a footprint in sands of life. I would not have made the world a better place because I was in it.
Thanks for helping me achieve part of my lifetime of dreams. My wife has always told me I can't change the world. I always told her no I can't, but if I can just make one persons life better I would feel like my life mattered!

I have learned that Zilla's son is only 17 months old and i very much do like getting kids started young he might be a touch too young!
I know we are working on the funds for the 2nd child now and I will fund the rest of it if I have to and if we can raise enough for a 3rd, 4th or 5th child we are going to need the help of some of you guys. If any of you have a child that you feel the hunt would do good for then send me a PM or post it here and lets keep trucking.
SRconnell22 - Yeah little brother - That is you... I havent seen your W-2 but I know how much you made last year so i know you can afford to pitch in again this year.. Maybe you have read this yet and maybe you have but I know you can afford to pitch in a few bucks.

Hey Dan - thanks again for this awesome event for these kids...
As for the lack of thread activity, I think part of the problem is that this thread is now a sticky and people don't see it updated as often as it would be in the main body of the forum. I had to literally search for this thread today as I have become conditioned to auto-skip-over the stickies on the forums!!! Just my thoughts...
Anyway, please put me down again for this trip - $25!! I'll search the sight again for your address and thanks for your wonderful heart and work Dan!!!

That's a fair accessment I believe. We've seen that happen before. There are positives and negatives to making such threads a "sticky".

Dan I talked with my butcher tonight. He has agreed that he would do the pigs at no charge. He also will come up and pick the pigs up the day of the hunt.
We would then butcher the pigs the next day at his facility. From there we'll find a way to get the meat to the kids and their families.
Guys we are not where we need to be to maximize the number of lives that we can effect. There are kids out their that need our help.
I look at this upcoming hunt a couple of different ways.
1) It's an opportunity to make a few new friends in life.
2) It's an opportunity to make an impact in a childs life.
3) It's an opportunity to make you feel good again!
Every day I pick up the paper and read about a few more people whose lives have been effected by a tough economy. My own life has been effected by this economy. I work for an automotive supplier who just last week found out that the plant was going to close it's doors. This will be my 2nd plant closure in 12 years of working as an Engineer. Now yes i'm in a better position than many in my plant. I have opportunities out there, yet I still fear the unknown. I have committed to this hunt, and look forward very much to being part of it. In all honesty this is the one of a few thing in my immediate future that truly brings me joy.
I know we can't all be there. But I know there will be lots of pictures, lots of video, and in the end something that we can all wrap our arms around and truly say made you feel good.
Guys this isn't a lot of money we need to make good things happen for a few kids who really need a pick me up. For just few bucks you CAN make a difference in the life of a child. Right here in Michigan, right now. You may say now isn't the time with the Economy. I say now is the time, for it may be just a matter of time before some of these kids go home.
Guys please take the time to truly consider this. These aren't kids who have been fed life on a silver platter. These are kids who dare to dream at times when there's not a lot to dream about.
I said the following quotes provided by Dan:
Every now and then we get an opportunity to do what is right. It's moments like these that makes the soul feel alive. This will truly be a humbling experience.
My fear always was that i'd die someday never having made my footprint in sands of life. I would not have made the world a better place because I was in it.
I truly believe this is an opportunity for me, and for many of you. In a time when doubt, fear, and depression are taking there tole. Pick yourself up and do something good. You'll never regret it!
Thanks for reading!

There you have it folks..
Death From Above THANK YOU very much for your very generous donation and once again looking forward to seeing you at the hunt this year!! Apologize I have not been on in a few days.. Things have been busy at work so I have not had much time!
TBBassDaddy - Coming through again for the kids!! Thank you sir for the support and for the kind words!!
Big Dave Hall - My Man!! I was about to jump over to NAHC and get things fired up for the 3rd Annual Pheasant GT!! How is it going brother? Thank You for the kind words and I suppose my outlook is much the same as some of the others in that I know I cant change the world but if I can help get some kids into hunting and keep them off the streets getting into trouble, or giving a child a chance to get back into the woods after a life threataning illness or tragic accident, take a kid on their first hunt or accompany and veteran disabled or not into the field... Well... I am all about it!!
I need to head to bed but I will update numbers tomorrow!! We have a few more donations that have come through and I am pretty certain we have enough to cover the 2nd child and are now working on the 3rd!!

For the 3rd child I have a couple of ideas and I could easily find a deserving child however I would like the feedback of you all and let you guys decide where the 3rd comes from.. Couple of ideas I had were..
1) Another Disabled Child - Thoughts on this are I have a couple kids that are deserving the opportunity but at the same time do we open it to any child that could maybe use the hunt more so for a pick me up.. When you have the chance to hunt with these kids that are disabled it is a very humbling experience in that no matter how bad we think it is if you lead a healthy life you dont have it all that bad! Or #2...
2) Making it somewhat similar in fashion to last year in that if any of you have a child that would like the opportunity to have them write a short bio under your user name and at the end of the day let the members decide or throw the names into a hat and draw one..
Give me some feedback...

Boy Vic!! That must be why you get paid the big bucks!!:D
Actually brother I have one ready if any computer gurus want to tell me how to post it up here so that it either comes in the form of a link or in some type of a printable format I would be happy to post it!
Or I can email it to anyone that thinks it might help!;)
By the way... Cass where you at? What size women's clothes you wear? I need to find you some pink camo so we can get Vic to come out of his pockets!!

Dan I also like the idea of sticking with a child similar to the two we are currently providing the help for. I'm sure we won't have a problem doing that....I believe there are a few organizations right here on michigan sportsmen that also provide this type of hunt. Lets see what their needs are at this point.

Just came across this post today. Awesome job as usual Dan.
As some of you will remember, my son Austin was one of the boys that hunted last year. (see the pix) He and I will never forget his EPIC tale of hunting boar. Austin watching me being chased by a wounded boar has been the topic of many conversations since.
Thank God that our financial situation has improved since last year. We want to take this opportunity and pay it forward. I just talked to Austin, and he wants to throw in $20.00 of his own money, and I am in for $100.00.
Again, I cant thank everyone enough for what they did for us last year. If anyone of you are considering donating and not sure, I will tell you this:
It IS life changing, to know that people who do not even know you are willing to give, so you can have memories, and stories to tell your grandchildren.
Austin and I, and the rest of our family, will never forget what you guys did for us last year.
With a humble heart, Thank You!

Ooooohhh Young Austin Smith!! Better known as the bot that shot my boar!! No hard feelings!! ;)
How the heck are you guys!! Long time no talk... I love how your pic in your gallery says Pumba cause that is all I can think of when I think of that hunt. Do you guys have any pictures of the mount that you can pop up here for us? Knight... I think you guys had yours mounted too if I remember, do you guys have any pics of that one mounted?
Larry, glad to hear things are going much better and very much appreciate your donation's and if you guys dont have anything to do that weekend and want to come up your more than welcome! Maybe if so me and Mr Austin can have a hunt off!! :D
Its funny cause my wife asked me if I was going to kill another one this year and usually from past experience when she ask its like "are you serious, you really need to kill something else" so my response was I am thinking about it. Then she says "The meat was really good." Truth be told I already knew I was going to kill another one just was dancing around it with her, if any of you are married then you know what I am talking about.. Just waiting for the right time to tell her. So after that response i said "you think I should shoot one?" Her response "Sure"!! Let me think about that for a minute... Ummm OK!!
Thanks Again Guys!

As far as the kids go and where we get them I am OK with Disabled children but if we raise enough for a 4th child I would like it to be a members child. Disabled or not..
We have several kids that submit applications through the Tony Semple Foundation that we can consider for the hunt if we need to go to an organization as such but I would like to stick with Friends and family of the People of MS first before turning to that option id thats cool..

I believe we have a 3rd candadite.. A family we know just received some news a very short while ago that their son has been diagnosed with Lukemia and although at this point we are not entirely sure this child will even be able to attend due to the frequency of treatments he is receiving and how it has affected him I very much hope he can. He is currently receiving treatment EVERYDAY at this point but hope to slow down in the near future and this boy loves the outdoors and loves to sit with his dad but what do you guys say we flip the script and let dad with sit his boy on his first hunt?

This hunt is the same weekend as your pheasant hunt.. I am doing the pig hunt Saturday and the Pheasant Hunt Sunday.. Trying to kill two birds with one stone! Hunts run $350 and the pigs range between 200-225lbs or at least they did last year.. Actually there were two that were a little closer to 300lbs.. I am taking my daughter and she is going to kill one this year before we get the kids started!

Apologize for sitting vacant on here for the past while but it looks like we may end up short of sending the 3rd kid is we get no more interest.. Tbsdaddy Thanks for your support.. We are not far off from sending a 3rd and one way or the other I will find a way to send him if I have to fund the balance myself.. If you know of anyone else or anyone else reads this we would appreciate the help and I think with we are going to hold it at the 3 kids as we are only a few weeks out now unless the responses pick up on this thread cause it has been much slower than expected..

Dan I do believe Scotty is giving us the go ahead and work on that 4th kid. I'll get busy trying to round up some more funds!
Put me down for another $10 for friends of mine. That should put me at $400 to bring with me to the porker party!
That should put us around $40 towards the fourth kid I would think.
Come on guys lets keep this rolling. How awesome would it be to get a fourth kid involved in this outing.
For $5 donations or more i'll burn a CD and mail it to you of all the pictures and video that took place the day of the hunt.
IF your looking for a pick me up, this is the event to do just that! It will make you feel good again just to be part of this experience.

#3 is a boy that has recently been diagnosed with Lukehmia I believe it was and is on treatments now...
#4 Is a boy that is also one who has less than a year to live and is in a wheel chair from my understanding..
Once we make sure #1 is a go for sure I will get all the info on the kids and post! If anyone else knows of a disabled child or to be very honest with you, a child that just maybe has been going through some rough times and needs a wake up call or reality check. It wont hurt to have one on reserve! ;)

This is our 5th and final kid.. His name is Luke and is currently winning the battle against Crohns Disease!!
Below is part of the email from his mother!! Though I would share with you all!
When we received the call on Thursday from Drew inviting Luke to this pig hunt, Luke was so excited. That is pretty much all he has talked about since that night. Drew may have shared with you that Luke was diagnosed with crohn's disease January 2008. The whole year was a challenge for Luke. He is a trooper and fought on. With the help of Drew's mom, a pediatric GI doctor and lots of prayers, Luke started getting better in October. He has gained all of his weight back plus some and is officially off steroids as of yesterday. We are so happy and thankful that he gets to be part of this. I can't thank you enough.

For anyone going!
Here is the address to the ranch..
14813 210th Ave
LeRoy, MI 49655
And also my cell is below and Jason whom is the owner of the ranch’s cell is 231-342-9642. Off from 131 you will get off on 14 mile Rd and make and head west toward the party store. Just before the party store there is a road you will want to turn right on that road and we will be about a mile down on the left hand side. My fathers Black truck will be there with the Childrens Charters emblem on the back window. The ranch is on the left side there.. Should not be too hard to find.
We are having a group come in about 9 -10 and another at about Noon.. Just let me know what time you are thinking of coming!
All he needs to bring are some hunting clothes and that should be all! Bing some warm clothes just in case too~
We will have everything else there… We are asking everyone to bring a dish to pass or maybe a 24 pack of water or pop. Let me know if you have anyother questions…

Kraig (Zilla)
Hope you dont mind but I swiped this from your other post. Folks this is from Curtis who was the kids that prompted us to fire this up! Our 1st candidate!
Hello
My Family and I wish to say "Thank You" to the numerous people who have donated the many gifts for me . First I would like to thank Mr. Kraig Enders who included me in his story about his son Jackson , Thank you for the Hunting Equipment and to everyone who donated and contributed to the " Pig Hunt" for me and my Dad to attend, thank you so much. yeah!
My name is Curtis Dougherty and I am 16 years old. in the 10th grade at Forrest Hills Central School In Ada Michigan, I like viedo games and archery . My story began when I was only 4 months old, I was only breathing at 60% oxygen I was diagnoses with" Pulmonary Artersia with Ventricular Sepal Defect " in plain english I was born with three heart valves when I was suppose to have four, also a hole in my heart the size of a quarter , so instead of the blood circulating around the heart, my blood just swished back and forth inside my heart.
I have very small veins leading to my left lung so I have very little blood flow to the left lung, I bascially I have one working lung. and every 5 years I get a heart valve replacement so in total, I"ve had 8 surgery on my heart and lungs.
Last summer while in University of Michgan Hospital, I endured many different procedures, On July 30,08, I had open heart surgery ,then the month of October 2008 I had a valve infection with fevers and chills, a pic line was put into my arm for anitibiotic's to kill an infection on my heart , then on November 06,08 (this was my 16th birthday) I had open heart surgery again and finally in December 08,, I was back in Ann Arbor U of M for a pic line infection again (" It was not a good year, it sucked to be me" ), being in and out of the hospital I missed alot of school too.
We shared a hospital room with Kraig , Heidi, and Jackson Enders. Jackson had surgery on his heart too, so my mom and I made conversation with them and I played with Jackson. My mom shared the story of "Camp BonCouir's Heart Camp" in Louisana, a camp for kids like me, who had heart surgery, and the good part of being at the camp was we all had the same scars on our chest , and nobody ever asked the question "What happened to you?
One day our camp councler took a bunch of us out to a shooting range with bows and arrows . I learned how to hold it and shoot at targets from far away ( I had a compound bow) it was the best time of my life. Kraig told me he was a bow hunter himself. He gave me a book with all sots of bows in it and we talked about hunting and stuff I was excited to see what was inside the pages,
I never dreamed that I would someday own one of these bows. I want everyone who have donated to me know that I am very lucky to have met Kraig,Heidi, and Jackson and appreciate all that everyone has done for me.from the bottom of my "Patched Up" heart
Thank You.
Sincerely
Curtis Dougherty Jr.

Willie's Story..
Willie is suffering from cronic renal failure. He has to have kidney dialysis three times a week. He is on the kidney transplant list and is waiting for a kidney. We are hoping that someone will donate one. We have all been tested but are not compatable. He also has weak bones and joints which causes him a lot of pain. He sometimes has to use a wheel chair.
I was wondering about the hunt. Just wanted to tell you that he can't hold a rifle up. So he needs a steady rest. Also you said that both his mother and I could be with him on the kill. I hope that this can happen.
You asked us to bring something. We are bringing a case of pop and some sort of chips.
I checked your directions and am quite sure that we can follow them. If there is nothing further that you need from us. We will see you at about 11:00 am on Saturday. Thanks Butch

I will update tonight when I have more time to sit down and type and tell some of the stories and memories made! All in all, each of the particiapants got their pig's! We tried to do the best we could with video and I honestly have not even looked at the footage yet but we have a few good hunts and some others where we were a little side tracked trying to help but should be OK!
I was a part of 5 of the 8 hunts and it was a very hectic day so actually did not even get to meet one kid and only met the other for a brief minute..
Pics and stories to come but I want to wait until I can do it right! Sorry to make ya's wait!

From Lukes Parents -
Hi Dan, I am writing after the pig hunt now. It was an awesome time. I don't know how to thank you. Luke had a great time doing the hunt and meeting all the people that were there helping you out and the other kids hunting. I know you were very busy making this happen for everyone, so there wasn't a lot of time for us to visit with you. Luke's sister, Cora, played with Alli for a while, she is adorable. Thanks again for making this happen for Luke. It is nice seeing him out doing what he loves the most, hunting. I think we were there until maybe 3pm. I hope everyone got to do their hunt and was successful. We made awesome memories yesterday and we thank you for making it happen. I know that was a lot of work and planning for you. You did a great job with everything and making it happen.
Please let me know what we need to do next. Luke would like to thank you and everyone that donated. If I go to Michigan-Sportsman.com and read the thread again, will that be the individuals who donated everything? Would it be possible for us to get addresses or emails of everyone (whichever would be best) so he could thank them personally?
Hope to hear from you soon or whenever you get a chance,
Thanks again
Chanda, Luke's mom
From Luke!!
Thank you so much for letting me come on a pig hunt. The pig hunt was very fun and I think it is nice of you to provide that to kids with illnesses. that was the first pig I have ever taken. Thant you so much I had a lot of fun.

Luke Mallory
