exactly, if you are going to have an event you have to reserve the space with a number of attendees, a permit and a fee, of course.

I am 100% aware that it is superbowl sunday. My eventual goal is to have an entire event with a tent (my buddy owns an event rental company), with heat (i work for a heating/cooling rental company), and big screens, on the ice, with food and drink. not this year, however, start small, so we will be going to Shark club, which has a hundred tv's and excellent food.

I'm trying to get a seperate website published. I used to be good at designing and publishing websites, however, it has been awhile, I'm 7 hours into this thing and I'm about to delete it. ARGHHH!!!!! I'm going nuts. If anyone who knows what they are doing and is willing to help pm me. I need a website to make sponsorship a little easier on me. it's not complicated, main page, rules page, results page, photo page, and a contact page. I'm about to pull out the book I got on tables and make something pretty crude.

Lordofallthatswims
01-08-2009, 10:04 PM
The websit is DONE!!!!!! Take a look at the sponsors and if you use them, make sure you tell them you saw them here, it will go along ways come next year when I want to get some stuff to hand out to you guys. Everyone knows the state of the economy and it has been tuff to get some sponsorship. The sponsors we do have and will get are really stepping up to assist a first year tournament. GanMoun said they would no doubt have helped out in the past but this year there is a corporate policy not sponsor just so they can keep the doors open, they have offered discounts on anything I purchase for the tournament, and I thank them for that.

There is not a whole lot to the site but we haven't had a tournament yet either. Thanks in advance to everyone.

Buffalo Wild Wings of Howell has stepped up to sponsor this tournament. My hats off to them. Buffalo wild wings will also be the official after party location.

Here is the email Mark from Bdubs sent me.

Ben,
I just spoke with you about your afterparty and I was wondering if you guys were planning on staying for the Superbowl. If that is the case, we have a VIP program which you get offered extra beer and food specials, and extra tickets for the raffle, and limited guaranteed seating. We are also giving out gift bags to the first 50 VIP's in the door after 2:00. We are open to the public that day, we are not hosting a private party (i asked if he had a special event that day already). We have prizes such as a Miller Lite Nascar hood, poker chips and tons of other cool stuff for the raffle. If you or anyone else would like to sign up, we'd be glad to have you, so either email me names of anyone who would like to join. It's completely free to sign up. Any questions please call

The directions have been linked on the website.

A buddy and myself went to the Ultimate Fishing Show today and handed out 800 flyers. Ron from Wilson Marine hooked me up with Henry, the show director, and he let us come inside and pass out all the flyers we had. Thanks Henry. We got a pretty good reaction. I expect to see alot of those guys at the tournament. If you guys are thinking of coming out, I would encourage you to pre-register, its going to be a shot-gun start, so if you don't have to wait to register, you can get out as soon as the horn sounds.

In the mean time you can hold the control button and use the dial on the mouse to increase the size of the fonts.

Please visit our sponsors to check these toys out and remember the tough economic times we are having and these companies are still stepping up to support us. Our sponsors are checking this site as well, so if you have a comment for them please leave it here.

Quads are welcomed. Depending on the number of registrants, we may ask that you drop your gear off and park truck and trailer at Wilson Marine at the corner of Grand River and Hughes, just for available parking purposes.

We think we can put together a fun tournament without putting too big a footprint on this lake in regards to fishing pressure.

I'm following this thread with interest as I'll bet a lot of guys are without speaking up. (Although I'll bet there are some fuming that Chemung is the lake!) ;-)

I was wondering if you were doing badges for the tournament? I know "we don' need no stinkeen badges" but they are a nice momento and could even become a collectible, especially if this is an annual tourney! :-) I wouldn't be surprised if someone on here has or knows someone who has a button machine.

I'll talk to my neighbor to see if he's interested.

That is a good idea, the badges, I will look into it but most of the sponsorship dollars have been spent.

If there are some of you guys planning on going, make sure you register or you will forego your opportunity at the grand prize.

I also want everyone to know, there is not a single dollar of profit on this tournament, all cash in will be prizes and cash out. All the promotion has been an out of pocket expense that I will not take from sponsorship money.

Tractor Supply Company of Howell has donated some nice gifts that will be used for door prizes.

I had a comment today that someone did not want to pre-register because they did not want to prepay. I want to clarify that pre-payment is not required, the pre-registration is a tool that we use to prepare for this tournament, nothing more.

Matter of fact, I have received sponsorship offers from companies that will only give a donation if I give up everyones info, I have declined and thanked them anyway. Your information does not leave the tournament log sheet and will only be used to inform you of major happenings in the tournament and to send the official rules just prior to the tournament.

Thanks,

There is a number of ways,

1. We are checking up on everyone, We have 6 officials who will be going from angler to angler all day to tag fish, you won't have to keep them alive that long. We will weigh-in dead fish as long as they are tagged.
2. Bring an extra bucket, doesn't have to be a big one, it can but doesn't have to, fill it with water, and plop your catch in there until we can tag them.
3. Build a snow bowl on the ice, put some water in it and plop your fish in there until they can be tagged.
4. Officials discretion will be used. If you were checked on 1/2 hour ago and you have 8 frozen fish, hmmmmm. If you were checked on 2 hours ago and have 10 frozen fish and 10 live fish then that is more believable.

We had to make a choice, either tag live fish by going angler to angler, or strip search everyone, the decision was easy. Its all in an attempt to have a fair tournament, in which everyone feels they have fair shot at the prizes.

The more successful this year is, the easier it will be for years to come. If, in this state of the economy, we can pull this off, every year should be so much more successful. I don't know if you remember the winter fest on Walled Lake 15 some odd years ago, but it was a great time in the winter. With any luck, you never know.

Couple funny things about this tournament.

1. My friends and I are hosting this tournament because there wasn't any around. Now its too big, so we can't participate, we have to regulate. We're not upset, we just had a good laugh about it the other night, we are even more excited now that it has grown pretty quickly since we convinced ourselves to go through with it only 20 days ago.

2. We are giving away a vex, no of us hosting this tourney have a vex, yet were giving one away.

3. You would think that in today's economy, it would be nearly impossible to get a sponsor, yet we found stretches where nobody told us no, some of those companies eventually told us no, but some didn't. At the local level, the support has been outstanding.

4. Wait till you guys see next year(I know, I'm getting ahead of myself). The response was fantastic this year. The traffic to the tournament site has been incredible, 2200 views form over 700 unique users, are you kidding me, this is a niche sport. That is almost going to make getting sponsors next year seem like going on vacation.

5. I promise to start working on this tournament a little earlier, I'm driving my wife crazy. She has been good about it, but I was supposed to finish up a wood stove I'm refinishing and instead worked on promoting and luring sponsors for this tournament. And the gas bill this month was like 300 bucks, so I got one of those 1 eyebrow up looks from her. Maybe I'll finish it up this weekend.

You know, I have been waiting for the "smack" talk to start. Let me just say, I learned a lesson today (on Chemung) from Jimmy Houston. Watch out boy's.

Btw. Lord it looks like it is time to start a new thread (last page??) Ah hell, I'll give ya the Vex. Got one, wanted the shanty.;)

Thanks guys for the appreciation. I am putting this computer away for the first time in about 3 weeks, and loading my truck with a shanty, auger, and bucket of reels and tipups. I'm stopping at the store to get a fifth of jack daniels. I am going to set up camp on a nearby lake, I'm popping the top off bottle, and I'm not leaving until I'm sober again. This is one of the luxuries of having a wife that works every other weekend on the midnight shift. I highly recommended finding one of those for every sportsman who haven't found "the one" yet.:evilsmile

I followed through this weekend, minus the Jack Daniels. I fished Chemung on Friday Night with limited success, I fished Thompson all day Saturday, lost all the poles to my portable shanty while pulling it behind my atv. I didn't find that out until I went back there on Sunday, unfolded the shanty to find they were missing. I scoured the ice and eventually found them all, talk about luck. Saw big fish through the hole, and a buddy of a buddy out there speared a 38 incher, nice fish. I've been having so much fun putting this tourney together that I forgot how fun it was to actually ice fish. All in all it was good to get out. See everyone in a week-1day. To my wife, who reads this thread often, I promise to work on this stove soon, probably not this week or the next, and I don't really have a day in mind, but it will get done, I hope.

Ok thanks for the headsup about the radios. This will make things much easier for the people that have them. Instead of us walking around the lake trying to find an offical to get our fish tagged. I just gotta buy some new batteries now for the handheld lol

......Heres an idea.....Flags for the Shantys with possibly a Number on them....so when someone calls over a radio they can say...."Hey this is Shanty #5, i need two fish tagged." A little easier than hey im over here in the NE corner see me waving my hands etc. Its Just a thought. Doesnt have to be done though.

Hey Guys, this thread is great for discussion but everyone must check the website for updates, I can't keep up with both. If you have questions send them through the tournament email, I check it multiple times a day and respond to everyone.

As of right now there are just shy of 100 people registered. Everyone will get a flag. Officials will not have radios, we will be visiting everyone at least once an hour, make sure you can keep your fish alive for at least that long. I don't know anyone by their username on m-s, so if you are attending the after-party, you need to send me your name through the tournament email.

whew, business for this evening is accomplished. We did pick up a couple more sponsors that donated some nice gifts, check out the site and see who it is.

Later y'all----Ben

Real quick, I appreciate all the ideas, but we are only a few days away from the tournament, and those ideas would have been great when I asked for them a month ago, but it is a little late to implement anything that we don't have scheduled already. We did our very best to host a fair and fun tournament, we believe it is well thought out and made plans for every situation we could think of.

Let's all keep in mind that this is an inaugural tournament and I'm sure we will all learn alot this year and maybe even have to change things for next year. Patience, if required, and I don't think it will be, is greatly appreciated.

I had a good time yesterday too. I don't fish tournaments as I can usually embarrass myself for free but everything seemed very well organized and thought out. It really looks like a great foundation that you're going to be able to build on! This should have impressed this year's sponsors and will no doubt make it easier to get even more next year! Good job Ben and friends!

While the tournament is fresh in everyone's minds you might consider sending out an e-mail or doing a post asking for ideas and suggestions for next year. I know you had some ideas that came in too late this year. Also, you may have to ask for feedback like this or people might not express ideas for fear of sounding critical of the fine work you did here. I suggested badges earlier but also too late. This would be cool especially if the tournament is around for a while. If you do badges next year you might make up Inaugural ones as well for the guys (and gals) who fished the first tournament and come back for the second.

I also had an idea regarding the need to keep fish alive. If you gave each registrant a bucket with the tournament insignia on it they could keep fish in that and everyone would get a momento from the torunament. If you got them or had a decal in a distinct or bright color you could probably id tournament participants easier too. Or you could sell these if the cost of one per person was too much. I guess having to carry an extra bucket that day might be a hassle to some but you can always use a 5 gallon bucket and the 6 gallon ones are even better. BPS gets $10 for their 6 gallon bucket with a lid so I'll bet they cost less than a third of that.

Anyhow you and your team did a great job! I'm still amazed how quickly you put this together, the sponsorship you got, and how well it turned out! It's a good thing we have anal people in this world! ;-) Next year should be even better. BTW, I went back out and fished until 8:00 and I still have my flag! Not only did I not trash my flag on the ice (Ben) but I policed the parking lot before leaving since I was the last vehicle. You and your crew must have done the same because I didn't find anything left behind or trashed. Looks like we had some good sportsmen (and women) fishing the tournament!

Hey Tom, didn't mean to falsely call you out, but I can't stand litter, so I'm sorry for hastilly calling you out. I'm happy that wasn't the case. We did a full scan of the parking lot and the entire lake, we found a few pieces of garbage, I don't know how long it had been but we grabbed everything we saw. All in all everybody did a great job and I am pretty proud to be associated with this group of people, sports men and women.

Those are some pretty good ideas and we are going to go through everything piece by piece. I am going to put a guestbook on the site this week and send out an email to request everyone sign it with comments. I am going to post some more photos, big fish and others.

Here is 1 idea, save announcing the first place winner for last. Oh well.
