For those of you that have been waiting...the 2nd Edition Precision Trolling Big Water books are finally in! I've actually got to put my hands on one Saturday morning and in my opinion this new edition is 100% better than the old ones.

This book has larger (easier to read) plastic laminated pages and Mark has added Walker Deeper Divers, additional Slide Diver data, Dive Bombs, Snap Weights, additional Lead Core Line data and Copper Wire data to it as well. I know its a little early to be thinking of fishing the big water yet but heads up that the book is ready to go!

is there any info on wire line and 16 oz balls on 3 ways? I would love some dive/blowback info on thumper rigs.

I heard the new book says that 300' 45# copper runs at 48 feet down at 2 mph. Can anyone verify this?

Good question! Its actually the most frequent question we've encountered since the new book came out. I have attached one such recent letter from a consumer and the response from Mark regarding this summer's measurement of copper line:

"I am soliciting opinions on the recent publication of depth reached by
Copper fishing wire as published in their "The Troller's Bible" BIG
WATER Edition 2 by Precision Tolling.

In it they state that #45 Test, .035 diameter Copper line, at 2.0 mph
when 300 feet back will be 48' down. According to manufacturers Opti and Howie tackle the depth calculated will be 7-9' per 30 feet out. Or 70-90 feet down.

As I see it this is a major difference in the way I spool, and rig my
boat this year. I would like to know the comments from the manufacture
and from others who use copper fishing line."

And here is Mark's response:

"Thanks for writing regarding our new copper wire data in Precision Trolling Big Water Edition 2. I appreciate your need to have the most accurate data possible. After all, you want to catch fish and be successful on the water.

Here is the dilemma. We commonly cross paths with various product manufacturers when it comes to the depth diving data we publish in Precision Trolling. Frequently our data doesn't support what manufacturers are claiming their products do. We're an independent source who tests fishing products with one purpose: to help other anglers use these products effectively. We at Precision Trolling have no vested interest in disputing anyone's claims as to what their products do or do not do. I only know and report what we see with our own eyes when we test various fishing lures and hardware as it is performing underwater. I also know that we pay considerable attention to every possible detail when we do our testing. Boat speed, boat direction, wave height and subsurface currents are all taken into consideration. Also, when we complete a test, we duplicate it to confirm our data is as accurate as possible.

We're only human and I'm certain we've made mistakes over the years, but the data we publish in our books is as accurate as humanly possible.

Manufacturers on the other hand are motivated to sell their products and use whatever marketing efforts they can to accomplish these goals. Typically the testing methods they use to determine running depth are crude compared to our methodology. Lots of things could account for why the copper data the manufacturer is providing differs from ours. Most likely it's directly related to boat speed or trolling in a following sub surface current which would cause the wire to sink and run deeper than our tests suggest.

We do our testing in still water, not the Great Lakes where deep sub surface currents can play havoc on the running depths of just about anything you might put in the water. This is a complex subject and one we take seriously. Again, our goal isn't to refute data others are claiming, but rather to simply point out how and why we do our testing. We have nearly 20 years of experience testing a multitude of trolling lures and hardware. That experience is invaluable and has served us well. Thanks for writing."
