Has anyone ever heard of, or seen, a brass cap for the disposable 1lb. cylinders? I would like to find some to be extra safe after I refill from a 20 lber. Leaking seems to be a problem with them. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Capnhook

Cabela's carries these caps. They're called "MacCap", item #XJ-518597. Come in a twin pack for $9.99. Look pretty snazzy!;)

Give them a sharp hit on the top from a scrap 2 x 2 to seat the valve. No more leaks.

Those caps would be a great idea. Wish I would have known about them, ... was just at Cabelas.

Read the warning on Cabela's website, that it's illegal to transport the refilled canisters. You'll probably never get caught, but it's just something to think about.

C'Mon Mark!!
Those disclaimers are in small print so you can't read 'em anyways...

I just refilled 10 of mine and my buddies with my 100 lber. Had 2 leakers that wouldn't stop. I just put them straight into the units to be used.

There might be something for cheaper than the Cabelas caps that would work in the plumbing supply aisle. I'll take a look tomorrow when I'm out and about and let you know.

I take it you guys are getting decent amounts of propane refilled? Does the 100# tank work better than the 5# tanks? I froze my 1# tanks and filled with my 5# tank upside down a couple of times but never had much success in getting a good refill.

Use your 20lb tanks or bigger.

My mistake, I used a 20# tank when I was attempting to refill. The 5# is the little one I take instead of the 1#'ers now.

I can't remember where I bought some many years ago but yes they do eliminate the leaking. I don't remember paying $5 for one but again that isn't so bad considering the price of propane...

Yeap a 20# tank works great for a filler.

With my 100 lber , I get a complete fill. For 69 cents.

What I have done when filling is put the 1 lb cylinders in the freezer or outside if its cold. The 20lb filler I bring in the house to room temp, then take outside to fill cylinders. You will find it that it fills them better this way. Just remember you dont want to fill past 80% to leave room for expansion during the warm months.I never had a problem of over filling,it usually stops filling on its own and I get around 3/4 full cylinder.
Also dont be a chowder head and try doing it indoors,be safe and tight lines!

Guys, Thanks for all the input! I'm not the greenest person you'll ever meet, but every one of these you refill is one that doesn't go directly to the recycler/landfill. I want to puke evey time I see one of these out on the ice. Thanks again. Capnhook

just take a finishing nail (head end) and push down on the needle valve and it will pop up and seat

Doesn't always work. Most times yes.

True, I have been filling them for 20 years

A little spray of wd40 then the nail works most times, and if I see any rust on a tank near the threads or valve area I don't use them any more

Sounds like I'm the only one who hasn't filled these bottles!? Where do we find everything you would ever want or need to know to be able to fill disposable LP cylinders? Thanks!

Usually I take out a 20lber, or a few small ones, and just toss the empties. With the price of propane up now, I bought 2 this morning in a pinch, and they were $4.29 each!:yikes: I couldn't believe the price. I'm either going to sweat a little more and and haul the big boy, or start refilling like you guys. Any advise to add to above appreciated. I read somewhere before there's an adapter you can buy? Thanks

I can get a full refill on my tanks. You have to get the little one cold and the 20 lb tank warm. Use a scale so you don't put more than a pound in the one pound tanks. IF the tank has some propane left in it and you want to top it off, that when its easy to accidentally over fill it using the hot/cold method. I end up paying 75 cents per refill.

I always get a full fill on my 1# tanks, usually there over full. I use a scale to weigh the tank before and after filling, make sure they weigh no more than 1.06 usually there 1.15 so you have to be careful. I keep the bulk tank 20 lber inside and use this one just for refilling, I keep the 1lbers outside or in the freezer and also make sure there 100% EMPTY. If they don't seal after filling I use a golf tee to push on the needle valve, I used to smack em on a piece of wood but it bends the fitting on top of the tank so they wont sit level I've bent them back but if you bend metal enough it does weaken. Those caps would be nice to have just to keep the valve clean and the threads from rusting.

Thank's guy's, I have that coupler I bought year's ago and never had any luck filling the one lb.er's. Guess I should of asked here as I was about to throw it away this fall. I use a lot of one lb.er's at my hunting camp for my propane lantern's but I usually just tell my buddie's to bring up two a man to help a brother out. Now I need to know can I use that coulper on a 100 lb. tank? It seem's one of the guy's got lucky last year and found one that fell off a truck and brought it up to camp. Even though I have a pig for the vent free heater's and the stove he felt that maybe we could use a "Presdential Solution" to hook it up to our gas grill's outside. Thank's guy's.

What's that rule regarding not having "Flammables" indoors?? Ok...Valve off...rubber cap over the fitting...well away from any open flames but...? ;)
