Anybody know of a hunters safety course around metro Detroit??

A friend of mine and his son are non-hunters, but both of them are very enthusiastic about trying turkey hunting...they really really want to get into the sport.

Anyway, they asked me if I would introduce them to the sport, take them out turkey hunting, show them how it's done. No problem here, but they need a hunters safety before they can apply for a turkey permit before Feb. 1 and I'm at a loss.

I told them I would try to find a course they could take, so here I am looking for an available class... I know its the wrong time of year, but I'm hoping to get lucky and help a father and son join our ranks...

Any ideas fellas??

Also, the father was born in 65, I believe he still needs hunters safety but Im not sure...eitherway, he still wants to take the class with his son and do the whole thing, from hunting class to dead gobbler together....

Any help out there??

AL

LOL, duh ya thanks, didnt know the dnr had a list available....and after further reading, I see they can apply for a turkey tag without having hunters safety but must have the safety class prior to purchasing their turkey license if they are successful in the drawing...

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction....there are a couple of classes that are in their neighborhood before the start of turkey season...should work out great!

Your address is AK. If theirs is also-just get a Hunter Safety (now pretty much called Hunter EDUCATION) class locally. 65 yo dont need one but is recommended.

Not true - according to the Michigan DNR website "Successful completion of this class is required for all first-time hunters born on or after January 1,
1960."

Following this link, there are classes in Jan, Feb, Mar, & May.

I'm not sure when you are planning your turkey hunt but here is a link to a class.

But I think they are exempt for up to two years under the apprenticeship program.

This is true about the DNR Apprenticeship license. This is from the DNR site...

Apprentice Hunting License Apprentice Hunting License A person who does not have a hunter safety certificate may purchase an apprentice hunting license. An appentice hunter may purchase this license for two license years before he or she must sucessfully complete a hunter safety course. The apprentice hunting license is available to residens and non residents. The apprentice hunting license is available to residents and nonresidents.
Apprentice hunters under age 17, when afield, must be accompanied by a parent, guardian or someone 21 or older designated by their parent or guardian. This individual must possess a valid, regular hunting license to hunt the same game as the apprentice hunter. "Accompanied by" requires the adult to be able to come to the immediate aid of the apprentice and stay within a distance from the apprentice that permits uninterrupted, unaided visual and verbal contact. Apprentice hunters 17 and older, when afield, must be accompanied by someone 21 or older, who possesses a valid, regular hunting license to hunt the same game as the apprentice hunter.
A person may accompany no more than two apprentice hunters while hunting.

Yes, the Apprenticeship will let you get out in the woods with an already licensed hunter without a Hunter Safety Course. I wasn't thinking about that when I posted, just the year. My daughter will probably go this route the first year out, just to see if she's really interested. However, I'd argue that it's not a bad thing to take the course anyway, since there are guns in the house and we do hunt and shoot, the safety aspect should always be emphasized.

Are you and your friends situated with Hunters Ed.? Perch Point Conservation Club has a Spring Class. PPCC is at Palms and Meisner Road (28 Mile) about 8 miles from I-94 and 26 Mile Road Exit.
