This is probably quite out of line in regards to this Forum, but hoping that someone can help me out. I am planning/hoping to go on a Safari to Africa in the coming year or so, and I need to start doing some research on the diffrent possibilities that are out there. Does anyone in this web forum know of any websites/forums that are stricly dedicated to Hunting in Africa where I could start doing some research? I am looking for good information that good be helpful, so anything would help. Thanks in advance.

Look at an SCI chapter, they are a good resource for Africa hunting.

I have a bunch of SCI magazines that I am starting to go thru. They seem very informational, however, the one thing that seems to be missing is information for the 'First-Time' safari person. Thanks for the info though.

Do yourself a favor and check out the forums at www.accuratereloading.com

Look at the African Hunting and Hunt Report forums. Read through the latest updates or search for a certain outfitter. You can read those forums for weeks and still find more.

I'd also check out the Huntin' Time Expos, which hit both sides of the lower in January/February.

Mallard Master,

A great website for helping to plan a first time African hunt is: http://www.shakariconnection.com/index.html This will provide you with a tremendous amount of info and links on African hunting.

Also you might want to consider attending the Mid-Michigan Chapter of Safari Club International. We are having an Outfitter's Night on February 27 at the Soaring Eagle Casino in Mt. Pleasant. The event is open to the public and there will be outfitters there from all over the world including Africa. It would be a great opportunity to meet face to face and learn about African hunting opportunities.

You need to actually talk to some SCI folks as they should be able to help you out with your first time hunt and all. They have some great stories to tell too.

I am planning on going to the W. Mich SCI banquet on 2/14, so hopefully I can get a chance to speak to some people there. My uncle has been their numerous times, and in fact just returned back from an elephant hunt a few weeks ago. I am obviously looking to go in 2010 so I can save up enough money to do it right. I appreciate all the help here guys.

All Pigs take about one (1) year to clear Customs.

Shipping ALL skins directly form there, back to here, and to a US/Cites inspected and approved tannery, will save you many headaches.

NOT following through on the shots that you are supposed to take when you when you get back... is a very bad idea.

I was about to say you should attend the Lakeshore SCI banquet in Muskegon in Feb.
I'm a Lakeshore member but haven't gone to Africa....yet. If you do go to the banquet, talk to Paul Royce. Tell him "Phebee" sent ya.

My opinion is to go with Cabelas Adventures. They have many to pick from and they have already done the hard work. I havent gone to Agrica, but I have used their services.

The owner of Ace Gunshop in Freeport, Brad Endres, has been to Africa 3 or 4 times and is getting ready to go again in August. He's got lots of pictures and a real nice collection of mounts hanging in his shop from his various trips. Stop by and talk to him, he loves to talk about Africa.

The first thing you need to do is set a budget for the trip. If you have the resources, go with a traditional safari where you pay by the day plus trophy fee instead of a packaged hunt; it's a far better experience. Assuming you go the traditional route, you need to determine what animals you wish to pursue and the associated trophy fees for the areas their located. You also need to begin to think about the areas you wish to hunt but this will be partially dictated by the animals you wish to pursue. You will also need to check into any caliber restrictions if choosing to hunt Eland and/or dangerous game; many countries require a .375 H&H for Eland and any animal that will hunt you back.

The best place to find a PH is the annual SCI convention. This will allow you to actually meet your prospective PH and interview them. A large part of your success will be because of the PH.

You will also need to go to your pysician and notify them you are traveling to Africa (be specifc with the country you choose). That way they can get you into Henry Ford to get all of your shots; there's some pretty nasty stuff over there.

You will alo need to check out the State Department to ensure you are allowed to travel to the particular nation you choose.

This should be enough to get you started.
