Okay so I have only targeted perch and sunfish. I was thinking that pike could be just as fun. The thing of it is I don't really know how to target them. I can say I have an obsession with fairhaven, even though I keep getting the dinks, but I have heard that pike have been taken there. I just want to pull something up through the hole that isn't 5" long. Please any reference or help is appreciated. Maybe even a nod in the right direction for those toothy monsters. Thanks.

Well, Ive been fishin' Fairhaven too. It seems just about every time out I see pike while fishin' for perch in about 4 FOW. Like Tuesday. I took one pike home and missed a large one.
Start with a spear, then try shallower water. I even have a pike decoy, but never use it since I am always fishin' for perch. That is the extent of my knowledge for pike.

Thanks. If there are perch and bluegills where your fishing theres more than likely a gator around looking for a meal...Just set a tip up in the area your pan fishing...Personally I like to use a shiner approx. 5 or 6"...I think they work better than suckers (more flash)... Set it so the bait is just above the weeds so it cant hide or get tangled up.....Use a treble hook with a steel leader...Dont qoute me but I believe a #2 treble will do the trick (approx. the diameter of a quarter)....When you get to your flag if the spool is turning let him go till he stops or slows down,,,hold the line lightly in your fingers tips and start taking some line back,,as soon as you feel some resistance grip the line and whack em,,,pull at a steady pace till you get his head out of the hole,,,gill him and whah lah.....If it takes you a little longer to get to your flag and the spool is not turning whack em right away......If your going to try to set the hook while the spools still turning,,,gently pick your tip up out of the hole and feed him 5 or six foot of slack,,,grab the line firmly and let him take the slack as soon as you feel him let him have it.....Spearing is also a riot but a whole nother ball game...(For all you spellers out there I know nother is not a word)

Taken from the DNR press release.

The spearing season for pike and muskie will now run from Dec. 1-March 15, instead of just January and February and the whitefish spearing season will now be open year-round. The new seasons are the result of legislation enabling the DNR to set spearing regulations. These regulations take immediate effect.

I use a sucker minnows for bait. My Question: can you use a small blue gill for bait legally. I saw some people last year using them as bait. I think I saw some where that game fish can not be used as bait!!??
Help in this matter. Thanks.

Well I have heard that pike do not prefer spiney rayed fish. Though the gills and perch are a favorite I have heard that suckers, frozen smelt produce more.

Game fish are perfectly legal to use if they are of legal length and season.

I like golden shiners 5 to 7 inches in lenth...the cost a few bucks these days but have all ways worked well for me on any body of water...Also i use single true turn hooks a short steel leader with 3 foot of 15lb of mono and white dacron line....G/L Mark

I went to Gander Mountain with my gift cards and I bought a tip up. I bought some 4" suckers and got out on the ice. My suckers kept swimming to hard and up goes the flag. So I tried the "heavy" strike setting and it still happened, a little less frequently but false alarm after false alarm. Is there any way to prevent the fish from false setting the tip up? Other than killing the bait which I ended up doing.....

I heard perch spearing season was changed as well.

Joeker, does that take immediate effect as well, or just pike and muskie as stated in the press release?

I never have done spearing, but I watched 2 guys attempting the other day. I am so confused as to what the legal status is at this point because I have now heard 2 very different stories as to when the season officailly opens. At any rate, what do you guys know about keeping the tip up from false setting?

I use a large split shot above the chub to tire it out.Or even use a belly weight they work really well keeps it tired enough not to set off tip up ..

I think the bait store guys gave my suckers steroids because I guess it isn't as widespread a problem as I though it may be. I just want to land a nice big pike. I am not saying anything bad about perch, but I took my little brother out on the ice for the first time and he said "aren't we going to catch any bigger fish?" It made me think a little... I decided, why not.

As far as the sucker bait did you weight him down?i use rubber core lock sinkers, and i dont like suckers id rather use golden shinners, sometime u can only get suckers tho...i use the old school tip ups and the wing nut on the spool is like a drag and can be set tighter to stop the sucker into triggering the trip...G/L Mark

I litterally took the packaging off the tip up on the ice. I was excited and didn't have a lot of time to research what the hell I was doing. Shoulda came here and asked first. I am going to try frozen smelt next time
i go out. Anyone go the frozen smelt route?

Just wanted to take a minute and let everyone know I really appreciate the help. This forum is great, no one is stingy. And to those who have PM'd me thank you as well. I am going to head out tomorrow starting at SANG and working my way up jefferson and 29 until the raft to find some ice and hopefully some fish. I know the ice is a little shaky but it seems to me that some people are finding it. In a clam 2000 and in a full camo suit if anyone is going out. I have a Buick Regal that is Grey if you see that out there. Thanks again.

Ice doesnt look that great in SANG area. If your trying for pike i would try fairhaven or the raft like Sly said! I see or catch pike almost every time out there! And thats with perch spoons and 3lb test!

As other said, start with a weight and if that doesn't work trim the tail of the fish so it can't push as much water.

I am going to a friends canal off his subdivision and I was wondering if its worth trying my tip up in the canal for pike. I think I may just set it up for fun and see if anything big enough will take it, but whats the chances for pike in a canal?
