Hi Guys,
I'm thinking about ice fishing Kent lake soon. I've only fished this lake a few times in the summer and I've never ice fished it so I would like to know if there is any place in particular that I should stay away from due to thin ice. I was thinking about goint near the bridge that seperates the two lakes at I96 but I'm not sure if there is a strong current there or not. I really just want to make sure I'm safe as I will be fishing alone. Also, if anyone can recommend a good spot for some gills, croppies, walley or perch please let me know. I'd also like to put up a tip up for some pike. I appreciate any advise you can give.
Thanks all and happy fishing! ;)

I wouldn't recommend icefishing solo on a foreign lake.

Stay away from the bridge or anywhere either side of it as there is a fair enough current that it rarely even freezes. For pike I'd fish out from the spot where the docs are in the summer, West boat launch? I think. It's where the deep water is and most people do their fishing there. i saw some guys at the west side of turtle head island but the area to the south of turtlehead around the islnds rarely freezes well either. that's where the river channel runs thru.
I'm not sure how the ice is so I wouldn't venture out unless someone else is on the ice when ya get there. I'm heading over there in a few to take a better look.

Thanks for the info. I'll be sure to stay away from the bridge. I probably won't be able to get out there until the 3rd of January so hopefully the ice will be solid by then. I'll be sure to stay by others if possible.
Thanks again!

No problem! I just got back from there and the ice at the WEST boat launch is about 3" clear and solid w' another 6" of slush, water and snow on top of it.
I could see where a couple people had been out but you'd basically be standing in 3" of water.
The road leading into Turtlehead Island is closed off, the gate is closed to all side roads in the park.

Good to know. There's not much worse than fishing on 6" of slush. Hopefully that slush will turn to ice in the next week or so. Thanks again for the report.

I spoke to someone at Kensington metro park this morning, they informed me that the lake is not frozen over today and the ice that is there is very weak and honeycombed.

I'm right there with ya Sean. Looking for someplace that has ice where I can catch something other than dinks.

My thoughts exactly Steve! I will be hitting the Brighton area Saturday to dust off the gear, might swing by Kennsington on the way home to pick up my annual pass. I'll let you know the conditions if I do.
