Quick question from a newbie.

When you fish with minnows do you hook them on a lure or a regular hook? Also, are you hooking them through the back or the lips and jigging?

I guess I am looking for the right way to fish with minnows for perch.

Thanks in advance for any help here.

Regards,
Lyle

you can use a lure/teardrop or regular hook.....and you can hook em thru the lips or thru the back. any combination usually works. but.... from what i know, perch will usually take em from the head so i usually use a small fucious jig thru the lips on em. hope i helped.:D

I hook them through the back. When you put the hook in, go just barely into the back so you think it almost isn't hooked enough. It keeps the minnows more lively. If you go too deep you will hit the spine and kill all the action of the minnow.

I hook them in a different way then most that I gre up using for crappie in Minnesota. I hook them through the meat just behind the belly. i found hooking through the lips allows for alot of small fish stealing your bait. Through the back seems they die relatively quickly. Hooking them through the meaty part behind the belly keeps them very active and allows to hook a bit more meat then thru the back! use a slightly heavier tear drop to keep em down on a schooly spring bobber rod!

I have been told that you want to present the minnow as if it is in another fishes jib's and they will come up and try to steal it.

I don't fish with them much anymore but I may try the method above, thru the meat in back of the ribs for a chub for a tip up.

I rarely (if ever) use minnows any more, but if and when I do I hook them in the back, between the gill and dorsal fin, and just BELOW the spine. They stay on the hook good, and even when dead stay in the right position for jigging.
I NEVER put any bait down and just leave it sit there.

When I use minnows, I hook them toward the tail, but not thru the spine, just above This keeps them active. A friend showed me this several years ago. When fishing minnows this outfishes any other hook method for me. I always out fish the person next to me when hooking this way. Let me add however, spoons with beads and teardrops with plastic have outfished minnows by far....

In the back off the spine and rigged so the weight holds the minnow on its back. They seem to fight more...

Hook them in the back so they can swim more. Also will give more action. Just use a plain jig.

....also for jigging when you are in a good school of fish, try using just a minnow head. Thread the hook from the back of the head so the tip of the hood is at the minnow's mouth and jig away.

Whenever I fish minnows, summer or winter, I hook them through the eye sockets. However, a minnow head on a jig can be a deadly method, as Joe Archer mentioned. When you're walking across the bay, its common to come across dead minnows that were left by other fishermen; pick some up and pinch off the heads and try it.:yikes:
