Subject: 3 lines fishing regulation proposal

**Please do not respond to this e-mail**

Thank you for taking time out of your valuable schedule to assist Fisheries
Division and the Department of Natural Resources in our request for your
opinions of changing Statewide regulations for the number of fishing lines
from 2 to 3. Your opinions are highly valued and each response counted in
our formulation of the proposal to request a change in the number of lines
anglers can use. We heard from nearly 700 interested citizens and almost
80% of those responses were in favor of increasing the number of lines that
an angler can use.

Since 2000, anglers have been allowed to use three lines when fishing for
salmon on the Great Lakes, but were restricted to two lines elsewhere and
when pursuing other species in the Great Lakes. Just recently, the Michigan
Legislature amended State Statute to provide the Director of the DNR the
authority to allow for an increase in the number of fishing rods for all
anglers on all public waters of Michigan. The intent of this change is to
allow anglers to fish with three lines (rods) regardless of species,
location or season. The Director would also have the authority to reduce
the number of lines to no less than 2 if necessary.

Fisheries Order 247.09 was signed recently by the Director and states that
"on all of the public waters in Michigan, those persons in the act of
fishing shall be restricted to using no more than 3 single lines or 3 single
rods and lines, and shall not attach more than six hooks total on all
lines." The order becomes effective April 1, 2009.

That's pretty cool, I only wish it would have went into effect immediately so we could have two tip-ups and a jigging rod while ice fishing this season....

Next year I'll find out if all those guys who took me out on their boats really liked me, or if they just wanted my 2 lines in the water!

Has anyone been able to find the Fisheries Order itself on the DNR web site??

I saw that a while back

It's going to help trolling for Walleye
And I'm not sure how it's going to help fishing for Bass, but I'll try fishing 3 at a time

Imo this sounds like a great way for bass to get gutthooked and become 13" seagull food.

Not if your drifting with BIG stick baits,

3 lines will not help the torunament BASS fishermen, Most tournaments only allow the use of 1 rod at a time, Personally I do not see the need for 3 lines but then im not a big water fisherman, seems like its just another way to spend the states $ thru lobying and what not!
Ive used 2 lines alot while ice fishing, always wanted a 3rd, so I can run a tip-up and still panfish with 2 rods in front of me!
I dont know if this will help us or not, same with the crossbow inclusion, just another way to spend the $ our struggling state does not have!

Most of the 2008 season I trolled with 8 inline boards. Once in awhile I would add a couple of riggers to the mix, or a couple of lines off the back. I doubt that the 3 line rule will change my fishing much at all. I try and fill the seats on my boat, and it fishes well with 4 or 5 people onboard. 15 rods???, I don't think so. We filled our ticket many times this past year. At times we couldn't keep up with two rods per person.:) I may get to try 3 rods early when we fish a smaller boat and only have 2 people onboard, but it would have to be pretty slow.

not the text of the actual order, but the rule change is mentioned in an article at the very top of the dnr site fishing section

I am hoping for the actual order. We are wondering on the exact wording of the 6 hook rules.

Lobying cost money, any time the laws change money is spent! it has to come from some where ya!
So the question is who is providing the $ ??
Jast as in the Full inclusion thing going on over crossbow's, someone is payin the $ to get-r-done! Id guess the Crossbow companys!

"some where ya"?? What is "ya"??

Lobbying is done by individuals and companies. So where does the money that you feel was mis-spent come from.

Up to now I have not heard of one complaint against the new 3 rod regulation.

This is not technically "the order" but it is explained on this DNR web page http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,1607,7-153-10364-203142--,00.html Probably can search for it there. I am positive you'll see it officially in the rules when published just before it takes effect 4-01-09, as is stated on that page. What I read is a third rod, no more or less restrictions as either of the 2 rods we are now allowed have.

Up to now I have not heard of one complaint against the new 3 rod regulation.

I was against it, but trolling alone or ice fishing I will most likely use 3 rods... ;)

Nope. Already have it. We are looking for a copy of the actual Fisheries Order which is the legal document. It is for research and archive purposes.

Since you are most likely going to end up using the 3 rod regulation for your fishing then I do not think that you would consider yourself against the new rule. ;):);)

Think what you like my good man but I was against it and sent a message to the DNR stating so, it is a matter of record. You saw that in another thread. It is a complex issue for sure.
For the sake of those who may wonder why I was (or others that were) against it that is because of piers, bridges, walls, or other public places that may have another rod per person and I think that is just too much.
So now that it will be allowed, I will probably choose to utilize the rule though I would rather not have the choice to begin with.
