Saturday:
Headed to Ginos for my first trip of the new season. There were a few guys out in front of Ginos, but I could see open water probably a mile or so out, so I instead headed to a nearby marina. Lots of guys in there, and most of them "snuck" in if you know what I mean. I walked around and started fishing near the entrance, and right away I nailed a nice 12 inch perch. I thought it was on. Not so much. Caught a bunch of little ones and then a 10 incher and a 9. Most on minnows, but a few on a waxies.
I headed back deeper into the canal and started to hit a few gills. 5 to be exact and they were all keepers. Finally something really large hit my zit with a minnow and it ended up being a 16 inch largie that I immediately let go.
There were fish all over the place in there, but they were really finicky. All fish were really tight to the bottom. Not bad for my first day of the season. Ice was about 6 inches or so underneath some slush and snow.
Sunday:
Headed out with my brother in law to another canal system, and we didn't catch too much. It was obviously too windy, but the Guide shanty kept us nice and warm with the heater we had. (Thank god) We maybe caught a dozen fish total. 1 was a keeper perch, 2 small crappie, a tiny largemouth, rockbass, a few more DINK perch and a mudpuppy.
Slow but still fun. I really want Cotton Road to freeze up. I love that place in the early season.
